5E Advanced Materials is a development-stage company building a boron business around its Fort Cady project in California. The deposit contains colemanite, a boron-bearing mineral. 5E says it extracts minerals using in-situ leaching, then processes the resulting solution to make boric acid. Its small-scale facility is operating, but the much larger commercial plant remains a proposal in a pre-feasibility study—not current commercial output.
What is 5E Advanced Materials?
5E Advanced Materials holds the Fort Cady project in southern California through its wholly owned subsidiary, 5E Boron Americas. In its Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2026, the company describes itself as development-stage and says its small-scale facility is operating. 5E’s Form 10-K
Fort Cady is the proposed foundation for an integrated boron operation: extraction from the deposit followed by processing into industrial products. In this context, “boron products” means borates and boron derivatives such as boric acid, not elemental boron metal.
How does 5E make boric acid?
Fort Cady’s boron occurs in colemanite, a hydrated calcium borate mineral. The 2025 pre-feasibility technical report describes a planned extraction process based on in-situ leaching (ISL), using hydrochloric-acid solution. Rather than mining and hauling all the ore to a conventional surface processing plant, the method circulates solution through the deposit to dissolve target minerals. The resulting boron-bearing liquid is called pregnant leach solution.

- Leach the deposit: The technical report describes using hydrochloric-acid solution for in-situ leaching of the colemanite deposit.
- Recover and process the solution: The pregnant leach solution is brought to a processing facility.
- Make products: Processing is intended to produce boric acid. The report also identifies calcium chloride and gypsum as co-products.
The company reports EPA authorization for in-situ mining in November 2023, extraction beginning in January 2024, and its small-scale facility starting operation in April 2024. The technical report describes small-scale boric acid production of approximately one short ton per day at the time reported. These are distinct from the proposed commercial-scale design. 2025 Fort Cady pre-feasibility technical report
Is 5E producing boron commercially yet?
5E reports that its small-scale facility is operating, but the evidence here does not establish that it has reached commercial-scale production. The company’s proposed Phase 1 commercial facility is a study design, not an operating plant. The 2025 pre-feasibility report targets annual production of 130,000 short tons of boric acid; that figure should not be read as current output.

5E’s development progress page, with status displayed in 2026, reports 14 customers qualified and a 20-ton commercial tank trial. Those are company-reported customer milestones; they do not by themselves establish commercial production or sales at the planned plant’s capacity. 5E development progress
What the Fort Cady project figures do—and do not—show
The 2025 pre-feasibility study reports a proposed Phase 1 design and economic model. Its figures are estimates under the report’s assumptions and qualifications, not realized operating results or guarantees.

The company says it is pursuing a final investment decision in fiscal 2026, subject to financing, final engineering, and board approval. That stated goal is a development milestone, not confirmation that a final investment decision has been made or that the commercial plant is financed and built. 5E Fort Cady project overview 5E development progress
