A direct affiliate program can give a brand more control over partner relationships; an affiliate network can provide access to publishers and program infrastructure. Neither guarantees that partners will publish useful coverage or that an AI system will retrieve or cite it. The better choice depends on which model helps you work with relevant publishers and measure mentions, traffic, and sales separately.
What is the difference between affiliate marketing and a direct affiliate program?
Affiliate marketing is the broader arrangement: a publisher, creator, or other partner refers an audience to a business and may earn compensation when readers click, buy, or complete another agreed action. A direct affiliate program is one way to run that arrangement: the business manages partner relationships and program terms itself, rather than relying on an affiliate network to provide some of the infrastructure or partner access.
These are not mutually exclusive strategies. A brand can run a direct program, work with network-based partners, or use both. The operational differences may affect recruitment, communication, tracking, payments, and cost. The available evidence does not establish that choosing a direct program rather than a network causes more AI citations.
Does affiliate marketing improve AI visibility?
It can create opportunities for publishers to cover a brand, but the existence of an affiliate relationship is not itself evidence that an AI system will mention the brand. AI answers may draw on brand websites, retailers, editorial reviews, comparison pages, and other sources. A program can make a brand available to potential partners; it cannot ensure that a partner publishes coverage, that the coverage is retrieved, or that an assistant cites it.
#1 Best Overall
A 2026 Glass Digital study offers a useful but narrow observation. It analyzed roughly 1,270 answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini, using 25 prompts for each of three UK retail categories, run daily from August 26–28, 2026. Of 479 retrievals to commercially classifiable editorial pages, 420 carried affiliate links—87.7% of that study’s sample. That describes affiliate-linked pages among observed editorial retrievals; it does not show that affiliate links caused citations or that direct programs outperform networks.
The same study found substantial variation by category: affiliate-linked editorial sources represented 29.6% of all retrieved sources in kitchenware, 7.8% in automotive parts, and 10.2% in designer furniture. Those figures are not forecasts for other sectors. In the tested categories, review publishers and specialist blogs were more likely than cashback or voucher partners to produce retrievable editorial mentions, while each category’s most-retrieved single source was the brand’s own domain. The study’s author explicitly states that it measures retrieval and citation, not whether having an affiliate program causes a brand to be named.

How should you compare direct programs and networks?
Compare the operating model against the outcomes you need. These are implementation trade-offs, not established AI-visibility effects.
| Decision factor | Direct affiliate program | Network or broader partner arrangement | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Partner relationships | Direct communication and program design with partners. | May provide access to established publishers and partner infrastructure. | Which relevant reviewers, comparison publishers, or creators can you actually recruit? |
| Program operations | Your team may take on recruitment, tracking, communication, and payment work. | Some infrastructure may be available through the network, subject to its terms. | Compare fees, workload, tracking, payment operations, and control of program terms. |
| Editorial coverage | Can support outreach to publishers, but does not guarantee coverage or favorable treatment. | Can expose a brand to publishers, but does not guarantee coverage or favorable treatment. | Assess whether partners create substantive, relevant reviews and comparisons rather than mainly coupon or cashback pages. |
| AI citations | No demonstrated causal lift over network-based activity. | No demonstrated causal disadvantage compared with a direct program. | Record the exact prompts, engines, dates, and cited URLs; do not treat a program label as a visibility result. |
| Sales attribution | Program reporting can attribute partner-referred activity, depending on its tracking and attribution rules. | Network reporting can attribute partner-referred activity, depending on its tracking and attribution rules. | Separate attributed revenue from incremental revenue and compare more than last-click results. |
Why AI citations and clicks are different outcomes
A citation is evidence that a source appeared in an answer; it is not evidence that a user visited the source or bought from the cited brand. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode can support longer, more complex questions and show links, citations, and inline attribution. In an August 6, 2025 statement, Google Search leadership also said its aggregate organic click volume was relatively stable year over year and that click quality increased. Those are Google’s own claims; the same statement notes that traffic trends differ among sites and that some quick-answer searches may end without a click.

Pew Research Center’s independent analysis, published July 22, 2025, followed browsing activity for 900 US adults in March 2025. It analyzed 68,879 unique Google searches, 12,593 of which displayed an AI summary. On Google pages with an AI summary, 8% of visits resulted in a click on a traditional search result, compared with 15% on pages without a summary; 1% resulted in a click on a link in the summary. This is evidence about Google use in that US sample and collection period, not a universal click rate for all AI products or markets.
Referral performance is another separate question. A peer-reviewed Marketing Science study analyzed 12 months of data from 973 e-commerce websites and more than 50,000 ChatGPT transactions. Its comparison of ChatGPT referrals with other channels varied by the outcome measure used. It does not test direct versus network affiliate structures or identify which structure earns citations.

How to measure whether a program is helping
Set the business outcome before selecting an attribution method. Track visibility, visits, and commercial performance as distinct measures rather than collapsing them into one score.
- AI mentions and citations: Define representative category prompts, then record whether the brand appears and which exact URLs are cited. Distinguish the brand’s own site from independent publishers, retailers, and community sources.
- Partner content: Track which partners publish relevant reviews, comparisons, or useful product information, and whether those pages are discoverable for the questions customers ask.
- Visits and engagement: Separate visits referred from AI platforms from conventional search and partner links. Measure qualified engagement, not just session counts.
- Conversions and revenue: Record conversions, revenue, partner costs, and the attribution window and method used. Attributed sales are not automatically incremental sales.
- Operating cost and control: Include recruitment effort, fees, payment and tracking operations, and the ability to manage partner terms.
AI answers can vary, so a useful report names the prompt set, engine, geography, and date range. A single visibility score without that context can obscure changes in prompts, sources, and output. This is a measurement approach, not a proven formula for causing citations.

How to run a practical pilot
- Choose a defined scope. Select a representative product category, market, and group of relevant editorial partners. Decide whether you are testing a direct program, a network arrangement, or both.
- Capture a baseline. Run a consistent set of real customer prompts across the AI services you care about. Save brand mentions and cited URLs alongside the date, geography, and engine.
- Recruit for useful coverage. Prioritize partners with subject expertise and an audience fit. Seek accurate, substantive coverage—not promised favorable reviews or link placement.
- Repeat the same observations. Re-run the prompt set over a defined period and track changes in citations separately from referral sessions, conversions, revenue, and costs.
- Assess the business result. Compare partner and channel outcomes using an attribution approach suited to the decision, and consider whether sales appear incremental rather than merely credited to the last click.
The pilot can reveal which partners and sources coincide with visibility or business outcomes. Unless it is designed to isolate causes and rule out other changes, it cannot prove that the program structure produced those outcomes.
What partner content is worth prioritizing?
The category-specific Glass Digital findings point toward testing relevant review publishers and specialist blogs, rather than assuming that every affiliate partner type contributes equally to discoverable editorial coverage. That is a reason to evaluate partner content quality and category fit—not a guarantee that a particular publisher will be cited. Creators may also be worth testing when their content is relevant and discoverable, but the available survey evidence does not establish a creator-related AI visibility effect.
For context, impact.com reported that its 2025 survey included 818 marketers in eight countries; 94% of brands surveyed were experimenting with or planning to adopt alternative attribution models within the next year. It also reported that 59% of brands planned to allocate at least 25% of affiliate budgets to creator partnerships. These are vendor-sponsored survey findings about marketer plans, not independent evidence that either approach improves AI citations.
What should brands do about affiliate links and disclosures?
Do not treat affiliate links as a shortcut to search or AI citations. Google Search Central’s July 26, 2021 guidance recommends properly qualifying paid links and emphasizes useful content and user experience over link manipulation. Google Search Quality Analyst Duy Nguyen wrote: “Focusing on producing high quality content and improving user experience always wins out compared to manipulating links.” Check Google’s current documentation before implementation, since that guidance is dated.
Publishers should make clear disclosures appropriate to their jurisdiction and platform. The cited search guidance addresses link qualification and search spam; it is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice. A commercial relationship should not require a favorable review.
