Best Buy does not publish a standard wait time for its store lines. For product-release events, the company says there is no set time to start lining up; shoppers decide how long they are willing to wait. The available timed example—18 minutes and 41 seconds—was one reporter’s 2016 Black Friday pickup visit, not a typical wait or a current estimate.
Is there an average Best Buy line wait?
No representative, current companywide average is established for ordinary checkout lines, online pickups, or release-day queues. Waits can vary with the store, the time and demand, the type of service, and steps such as payment checks or locating an item. A queue’s length also does not tell you how long the whole visit will take.
Best Buy’s public queue-board page asks for a store number but does not display a readable public wait estimate. It therefore cannot be used here to give a general wait range.
What does the 18-minute example actually measure?
In a November 25, 2016 Washington Post report, Sarah Halzack timed one Black Friday online-pickup visit at a Best Buy in the Washington area. The full in-store interval—from entering until leaving—was 18 minutes and 41 seconds. It was not a stopwatch measure of time spent standing in a line, nor a company statistic.
#1 Best Overall
Halzack described a checkout line crossing the pickup area, a delay verifying the payment card on the order, and time spent waiting while staff found a cabinet key. Those details illustrate why total visit time and queue time are different measures. One visit at one store on one busy shopping day cannot predict another store, date, or task.
How do Best Buy release-day lines work?
Best Buy’s In Store Release Guidelines say release-day lines are first come, first served. The company does not specify when customers should arrive: “There is no set time to start forming a line — it’s up to you based on how long you’re willing to wait.”

- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
- Before the store opens: Best Buy directs customers to line up outside near the front entrance.
- For smaller events during store hours: Employees may direct customers to form a line inside.
- Availability: A place in line does not guarantee the product will still be available. Product limits vary by release, and employees cannot provide real-time inventory numbers for limited-release items.
How can you prepare if you choose to wait?
Best Buy’s release-day checklist suggests comfort and practical items, not ways to shorten the wait or improve line priority. Consider bringing only what suits the weather, event, and expected wait:
- A small folding chair, if permitted at the location
- A jacket or rain gear, gloves or a hat, and hand warmers in cold weather
- A phone and portable charger
- Water, sunscreen, and snacks
- A book, games, or headphones for entertainment
These are optional preparations. None guarantees a shorter wait or that the item you want will remain in stock.

How to judge a wait-time claim
Before relying on a reported wait, check what it describes. An ordinary checkout, customer-service visit, online pickup, and release-day queue are different experiences. Also distinguish time standing in line from total time inside the store, and look for the date, location, and circumstances. Without those details, a single anecdote is not a useful forecast for your visit.
