Should You Pay in CAD or USD at a U.S. Merchant?

At a U.S. checkout, Canadian cardholders are usually better off paying in USD and letting their card issuer process the conversion. Check issuer fees and billing currency before deciding.

For most Canadian cardholders, pay in USD when a U.S. merchant offers to convert the purchase to CAD. That declines the merchant’s currency-conversion rate and leaves the transaction to be converted under your card issuer’s terms. Check your card’s billing currency and foreign-transaction fees first: those can affect the final cost.

Should I accept the merchant’s currency conversion?

Usually, no. A merchant’s offer to charge your card in CAD is dynamic currency conversion (DCC), also called point-of-interaction currency conversion. The merchant or its acquirer sets the exchange rate for that conversion, rather than leaving the USD transaction for your card issuer to process. Mastercard’s transaction-processing rules, dated June 10, 2025, specify that when point-of-interaction conversion is used, the merchant or acquirer applies the exchange rate.

Visa Canada says a foreign merchant’s home-currency conversion usually includes a markup and advises cardholders to decline it. Visa’s Canadian travel guidance and Visa’s DCC guidance explain the markup and disclosure expectations. Paying in USD generally lets your issuer or its processing arrangement handle the conversion instead. Mastercard likewise recommends letting your home bank convert, while advising cardholders to ask their issuer about applicable foreign-transaction charges. Mastercard’s currency-conversion FAQ

What the checkout offer should show

Before you accept a CAD conversion, look for a clear disclosure of:

  • The purchase amount in both USD and CAD.
  • The exchange rate used.
  • Any additional fee or markup.
  • A genuine choice of currency, without the merchant choosing for you or using visual cues to steer your selection.

Visa says to decline the conversion and report the incident to your card issuer if required details are missing or you feel pressured to choose one currency. Visa’s guidance on currency conversion at checkout

How to compare the two options

Compare the merchant’s CAD offer with the cost of the USD transaction under your card’s terms. The CAD total shown at checkout is not automatically the cheaper option just because it is familiar or fixed immediately.

What to compare Pay in CAD (merchant conversion) Pay in USD (issuer conversion)
Exchange rate The rate set by the merchant or acquirer; check the disclosed rate. The conversion applied by your issuer or its processing arrangement under your card terms.
Explicit conversion fee or markup Check the checkout disclosure for any additional fee or markup. Check your card terms for any applicable foreign-transaction fee.
Billing currency Confirm the currency your card account is billed in. Confirm the currency your card account is billed in; issuer terms still matter.

The sources do not establish rates or fees for individual Canadian cards. Mastercard advises contacting your issuer to learn what foreign-transaction charges apply. Its FAQ says currency-conversion fees can be “sometimes as much as 7%,” but gives no publication year for that figure; it is not a current universal rate or a reliable estimate for a particular card or transaction. When might paying in CAD make sense?

It may be worth considering only after checking the actual figures and your card terms—for example, if the card’s billing currency or issuer charges make the USD route different from the usual case. Compare the CAD amount and disclosed rate with the USD amount converted under your issuer’s terms, including any applicable foreign-transaction fee. If the merchant does not disclose the rate and fees clearly, or pressures you to accept, decline the conversion.
