Its public Q&A community could become a more specialized archive and a human source of explanation and validation, while the company pursues a broader business in technology communities and enterprise knowledge. Those are separate prospects: falling public activity does not by itself prove the archive is useless or the company is failing.
Why developers ask whether Stack Overflow is still relevant
The question captures a real change in help-seeking habits. In ITPro’s March 2026 report, freelance developer and AI engineer Vincent Schmalbach said, “If it would go away tomorrow, I wouldn’t even notice it.” He described relying instead on AI summaries, official documentation and GitHub Issues for many routine or package-specific problems. The same report includes a counterpoint from Gergely Orosz, author of The Pragmatic Engineer: “I’ll certainly miss having a space on the internet to ask questions and receive help – not from an AI, but from fellow, human developers.” These are individual views, not a representative poll, but they express the divide behind the debate.
ITPro reports that Stack Overflow had more than 250,000 monthly queries at a mid-2010s peak and recorded 2,640 queries in January 2026. The report describes a decline beginning before ChatGPT’s public launch in November 2022, followed by a sharper drop. Those are reported figures, not a consistently verified monthly series here, so they establish a serious contraction in question posting without supporting a precise percentage comparison or a claim that AI alone caused it. ITPro’s March 2026 account also records developers’ frustration with moderation and changed habits.
What AI changes—and what it has not settled
AI is both a substitute for some searches and a source of new uncertainty. In Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey, 84% of respondents said they used or planned to use AI tools, up from 76% in 2024. Yet 46% said they did not trust the accuracy of AI output, up from 31% in 2024. Adoption therefore should not be mistaken for confidence that an answer is correct. The survey’s AI results and Stack Overflow’s survey release report these findings.

#1 Best Overall
Asked to imagine a future in which AI could do most coding tasks, 75.3% of respondents selected distrust of AI answers as a reason they would still ask a person, and 61.3% selected wanting to fully understand their code. These were multiple-select responses to a hypothetical scenario. They indicate stated reasons to seek human help, not proof that respondents will visit Stack Overflow specifically.
Learning and debugging are part of that gap. Stack Overflow’s September 2026 retrospective says that, among respondents to the relevant 2025 survey question, 20.0% reported becoming less confident in their own problem-solving because of AI frustrations and 16.3% said it was hard to understand how or why AI-generated code worked. Those responses do not establish that AI weakens learning. The same retrospective reports that 68.7% of respondents answering a 2024 question about Stack Overflow use selected finding reliable guidance in community-vetted answers. In its summary of the 2025 survey, it also notes that 61.3% would seek a person to fully understand something and 58.1% to learn best practices in the hypothetical advanced-AI future. Stack Overflow’s 2026 retrospective explicitly says, “Whether that use translates into greater understanding remains an open question.”

The survey is useful evidence about its respondents, not a census of developers. In particular, people who have stopped visiting Stack Overflow may be less likely to show up in a survey conducted by the company. Its 2025 press release says 82% of respondents visited at least multiple times per month and 35% visited after encountering problems with AI responses; those figures should not be generalized to all developers.
What the evidence suggests about the remaining Q&A community
A smaller flow of questions does not necessarily make every remaining contribution less useful. A study analyzing two years of Stack Overflow data reports that contributions declined faster after ChatGPT’s introduction, while questions and answers grew longer and questions became more difficult. The abstract supports a directional pattern: fewer contributions alongside harder questions. It does not show that every programming topic changed in the same way, or prove that ChatGPT caused the platform’s broader decline. The study abstract is evidence of a changing mix, not a forecast of Stack Overflow’s future.

That pattern leaves a plausible niche for questions that are unusual, low-level or difficult to diagnose from a short prompt: a durable record of a solved problem, plus discussion and context from people who have encountered similar failures. It is not a guarantee that Stack Overflow will be the community developers choose for those questions. Its value depends on whether answers remain discoverable, applicable and trusted—and whether people with the needed expertise continue contributing.
Where developers can seek help
| Help source | Potential strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Stack Overflow public Q&A | A durable archive of community-vetted answers may help with difficult questions where human context matters. | Question posting has fallen in the reported figures and study; interviewees describe frustration with moderation and changed habits. |
| AI assistants and search summaries | Fast answers integrated into coding workflows; AI tool use or planned use was widespread among 2025 survey respondents. | Developers also reported doubts about accuracy and difficulty understanding how generated code works. |
| Official documentation and GitHub Issues | First-party documentation and maintainer discussions can fit a specific library or package problem. | Their usefulness depends on the software and its community; the interview accounts do not establish that they replace broad, durable Q&A. |
| Other human communities | Groups on platforms such as Discord, WhatsApp and Telegram can support live peer interaction, according to Orosz’s comments reported by ITPro. | The reporting does not compare their answer quality, discoverability, permanence or scale with Stack Overflow. |
These sources can complement one another rather than serve as mutually exclusive choices. A developer might use an AI assistant to orient a search, verify a library detail in its documentation, and consult a public thread or a person when the proposed fix is unclear or the failure is unusual. The evidence does not establish that any one route will replace the others for every kind of question.

Stack Overflow the company has a broader stated strategy
The future of the public Q&A site is not identical to the future of Stack Overflow as a business. In a 2025 interview, CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar described enterprise interest in Stack Overflow’s data, partnerships with major AI companies, integrations into other products, and plans to widen the intended audience from professional developers to technology enthusiasts through community, learning and career features. He summarized the integration approach as: “The statement we use inside the company is ‘Go to wherever the users are’.” The interview makes the company’s ambitions clearer, but strategy statements are not independent evidence of commercial success. It provides no audited breakdown showing whether enterprise activity offsets changes in public contributions.
Chandrasekar also told ITPro that “Stack is far from dead,” arguing that the public Q&A chart does not describe the whole business. That is the CEO’s position, not a neutral measurement of either community health or financial durability. Available reporting does not establish the company’s business mix or long-term sustainability.

What would determine Stack Overflow’s future
- Whether hard questions still find contributors: A more specialized archive only stays useful if people with relevant expertise answer and maintain knowledge that becomes outdated.
- Whether developers can find and trust answers: Community review is a potential advantage, but discoverability and relevance matter when AI tools, documentation and other forums are easier entry points.
- Whether human help remains worth seeking: Survey responses show stated demand for understanding and trust, but do not show which platform will meet it.
- Whether the company’s wider strategy works: Partnerships and integrations may extend the business beyond public posting, but the available sources do not establish their financial contribution.
The defensible outlook is conditional: Stack Overflow may persist as a reference archive and human verification layer while losing its former position as the routine starting point for programming help. A future for the community is plausible; a return to its old centrality is not demonstrated. Whether the wider company can build a sustainable business around technology communities and trusted knowledge remains unresolved.
