The result depends on whether the account was actually closed, the amount still due, and the terms of your specific card. This article covers India, where the relevant rules are set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI); cardholders elsewhere should check their local rules and issuer agreement.
First, check whether the card was blocked or the account was closed
A card that cannot be used may only be blocked or deactivated. RBI explains that blocking temporarily stops transactions while the credit or account relationship with the issuer continues. It is not the same as closing the account. RBI’s credit-card FAQ states: “De-activation/Blocking of a credit card temporarily curtails the ability of a cardholder to make any transaction in a credit card account while still maintaining the credit/account relationship with the card-issuer.”
Ask the issuer in writing whether the account is blocked or formally closed, and request the effective closure date—or the reason closure is still pending. Under RBI directions, issuers must honour a closure request within seven working days, subject to payment of dues. The period you take to clear outstanding dues is excluded from that timeline. If dues remain, the issuer must provide their details and advise you to pay them. See the RBI credit-card directions.
The directions specify a penalty of ₹500 per calendar day when an issuer misses the closure timeline and there are no outstanding dues in the account. This is not a penalty for days during which you still have dues to clear.

What happens to an EMI after closure?
There is no universal rule in the cited sources that every EMI either continues unchanged after closure or is automatically cancelled. The issuer’s terms and your account status determine the treatment. Ask for an itemised current balance and a separate EMI payoff or foreclosure quote showing the remaining principal, any interest or fees, and how to pay.
Issuer terms can require a lump-sum settlement
Axis Bank’s published terms say a card cannot be closed while an EMI is running. If closure occurs before all EMI instalments have been posted, the remaining EMI principal is debited to the card account as one consolidated amount, with regular credit-card interest applying. That is an Axis-specific example, not a rule for every issuer. Check the applicable terms for your own card and get the payoff amount and payment method in writing: Axis Bank credit-card terms.

Keep paying amounts shown as due while you dispute a calculation
Do not simply stop paying an amount the issuer says is due while a payoff calculation is disputed. Raise a documented billing complaint and ask for an explanation. RBI directions require issuers to explain protested bills and provide documentary evidence where applicable within a maximum of 30 days.
What happens to pending reward points?
Rewards are governed by the card’s terms and status. A point that is pending posting may be treated differently from a posted point, and closure may affect whether you can redeem either. Do not assume an unposted reward will be credited or remain redeemable.

The rules differ by issuer and product. HDFC Bank’s agreement allows an eligible reward-redemption claim for 30 days after closure; that is a term in that agreement, not an industry-wide grace period. Other issuer terms describe circumstances in which points may be cancelled or forfeited, and some redemption routes depend on the card’s status. SBI Card rules also vary by card and can require certain air-mile redemptions before voluntary closure. Review the agreement for your exact card and contact the issuer promptly. Relevant terms include HDFC Bank’s cardmember agreement, ICICI Bank’s credit-card terms, RBL Bank’s credit-card terms, Federal Bank’s credit-card terms, DBS credit-card terms, and SBI Card terms.
Ask the issuer to confirm whether each reward is earned, pending posting, or ineligible, along with the deadline and available redemption route. Save a screenshot or statement showing the balance and any relevant transactions.

What to do now
- Confirm account status. Write to the issuer asking whether the card is blocked or the account is formally closed. Request the effective closure date or the reason closure is pending.
- Get the full balance. Request a current statement and an itemised breakdown of all dues, including EMI principal, interest, and fees.
- Request an EMI payoff quote. Ask whether instalments will continue to be billed or whether the remaining balance must be settled another way. Get the amount, any charges, and payment instructions in writing.
- Resolve reward eligibility promptly. Ask about pending and posted points separately, and request the applicable deadline and redemption steps. Redeem eligible rewards before the deadline the issuer confirms.
- Keep a record of every exchange. Save your closure request, complaint reference numbers, statements, reward screenshots, and issuer replies.
How to escalate an unresolved complaint
Start with the issuer’s grievance channel and keep the complaint reference. RBI’s FAQ describes when a customer can approach the RBI Ombudsman: if the issuer does not respond within 30 days, rejects the complaint wholly or partly, or gives a response the customer finds unsatisfactory. Details are in the RBI credit-card FAQ. For a billing dispute, retain the documents supporting your complaint and request the issuer’s explanation and any relevant evidence.
