Neither online slots nor table games always offer better odds. Slots usually resolve a programmed spin or round, while table games apply distinct rules to hands, wheel outcomes or other events. To compare the odds, check the disclosed return or house edge for the exact game, including its rules and—where skill matters—the strategy assumptions behind the calculation.
How online slots and table games play differently
Online slots
A slot round generally begins with a stake and resolves through the game’s programmed outcomes, symbols, paytable and features. The paytable and game information explain what combinations or events can produce prizes. UK Gambling Commission guidance describes reel-based gaming machines as fruit, slot or jackpot machines, but that page covers gaming machines and is not a universal description of every online slot. Table games
Table games use game-specific rules to settle hands, wheel outcomes or other events. Blackjack includes player decisions within its rules; roulette centers on wagers on wheel outcomes; baccarat follows its own hand and wager rules. The New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs lists these games in its casino table-game rules index, but the versions and availability can differ by venue and jurisdiction. Online games may use random number generators (RNGs), and some table games are also offered with live dealers. These are broad format distinctions, not a guarantee that every title is implemented the same way. In Great Britain, the UKGC says RNG-driven online games must be tested by an approved test house before release and monitored after launch for fairness and designed RTP. What RTP means—and what it does not mean
Return to player (RTP) is a theoretical percentage of stakes returned as prizes across a large number of plays. It is not a forecast of what one player will get back in a session. The UKGC puts it plainly: “The %RTP is an average achieved over a significant number of game plays and not each time the gaming machine is played.” Its guidance gives an illustrative example: a machine displaying 85% RTP does not mean a player should expect to win an average of 85 pence for every £1 staked during a session. The 85% is an example, not a claim about all machines. UKGC: return to player
A slot’s published RTP therefore describes a long-run theoretical average, not a session promise. Actual results over a short period can be very different.

Is RTP the same as house edge?
They describe related sides of expected outcomes, but the terms are not interchangeable in every context. RTP describes the theoretical share of stakes returned as prizes; house edge describes the casino’s expected average share under normal patterns of play. The UKGC explains house edge as the percentage the casino expects to keep on average from each hand or spin. Neither figure guarantees the result of a particular spin or hand. UKGC player guidance
For a skill-influenced game, a theoretical return also depends on the strategy used in the calculation. Great Britain’s remote technical standards say the theoretical return for a non-peer-to-peer event involving skill should be calculated using autoplay or a standard or published strategy. A figure based on such a strategy should not be read as the return every player will achieve. UKGC remote gambling technical standards, RTS 3

Are slots or table games better odds?
There is no reliable category-wide winner. RTP and house edge vary by individual title, table rules, wager and, for skill-influenced games, the strategy assumptions used. The cited regulator sources do not provide a consistent cross-category dataset or one figure that can rank all slots against all table games. Compare the disclosed odds for the exact game and version you are considering rather than assuming one category is always more favorable.
What to check before playing
In Great Britain, remote gambling standards require game descriptions and information about house edge, RTP or the likelihood of winning to be accessible. The UKGC also says payout information must be readily available before a customer commits to gamble. Check the game’s rules, paytable or help material and odds disclosure before staking money. These are Great Britain regulatory requirements; other markets may have different rules. UKGC RTS 3

- Rules: Find out how a result is determined and what decisions or wager choices are available.
- Odds disclosure: Look for RTP, house edge or the probability of winning events, as applicable.
- Paytable and payouts: Check potential prizes and how payouts work before committing to play.
- Strategy basis: For a game involving skill, identify the standard or published strategy assumed in any theoretical-return figure.
- Version and jurisdiction: Confirm that the rules shown apply to the game offered in your market. New Zealand’s DIA index, for example, marks its consolidated baccarat rules as updated June 2026, blackjack June 2025 and roulette May 2025, and says those consolidated texts do not replace official Gazette versions. The DIA also notes that not all casinos offer every game. DIA table-game rules index

What the odds can—and cannot—tell you
A disclosed RTP or house edge helps describe a game’s theoretical economics, not the outcome of a particular session. A rules-based comparison is most useful when it names the exact game, market and version, and states any strategy assumptions. If those details are missing, a percentage alone cannot support a fair comparison between a slot and a table game.
