Start by identifying the program and agency that should pay you, then check its official payment or case-status channel. The issuing agency determines whether a payment was sent, whether it is due, and what steps apply to a claim or replacement. If an electronic deposit is missing, your bank may be able to tell you whether it has arrived but is delayed in posting.
First, identify the payment and the problem
Check benefit or tax account notices, prior payment records, and correspondence to confirm which program is involved and which agency issues the payment. The right route depends on both the program and whether the payment is an electronic deposit, a paper check, or an amount you believe is incorrect.
- Unknown federal payment: Use the agency index on USA.gov’s government checks and payments page. If you still cannot identify the issuer, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service can help at 1-855-868-0151.
- Social Security: Contact the Social Security Administration (SSA).
- VA benefits: Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
- SNAP: Contact your state SNAP office.
- TANF: Contact your state or tribal TANF office.
For incorrect benefit payments, USA.gov’s program directory points to the relevant office.
Check status and gather details before contacting the agency
Read any notices and check the official program account or payment-status channel, if one is available. Have the expected payment date and amount, relevant notices, and any confirmation or claim details ready. Keep copies of messages and documents you submit. Do not assume that every program uses the same reporting process or replacement rules.

Missing electronic Social Security deposit
SSA advises checking with your bank or financial institution first because an electronic payment may be delayed in posting. If it remains missing, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778) or contact a local SSA office. SSA says it will review the case and replace the payment if it is due. See SSA’s instructions for reporting a missing payment.
VA benefits
For VA payment issues, call 1-800-827-1000 (TTY 711) or contact a VA regional benefits office. The appropriate VA contact is listed on USA.gov’s benefit-payment reporting page.

SNAP or TANF
Report a SNAP payment problem to your state SNAP office. For TANF, contact the state or tribal TANF office responsible for your case. These are program-specific routes; a federal payment contact may not be able to resolve a state or tribal benefit issue.
Lost, missing, stolen, or expired federal check or deposit
Report the problem to the agency that issued the payment and follow its claim instructions. If you do not know which agency sent a federal payment, ask the Bureau of the Fiscal Service for help identifying it at 1-855-868-0151. USA.gov outlines this process on its government checks and payments page.

Check how a federal payment is being delivered
Most federal payments previously made by paper check began transitioning to electronic methods on September 30, 2025. If you still expect a paper federal benefit check, ask the paying agency about your payment method and any available exception or enrollment process. MyMoney.gov describes direct deposit and the Direct Express card as electronic payment methods and directs recipients to the agency responsible for their benefit: Federal Government transition away from paper checks.
Verify unexpected requests before sharing information
If you receive a message asking for personal or financial information, verify the request using an agency website or phone number you independently know is genuine. Do not rely on contact details or links in an unsolicited message; MyMoney.gov recommends confirming requests through trusted agency channels.

How long will a delayed payment take?
There is no single arrival or replacement timeline established across federal, state, tribal, tax, and benefit programs. Ask the issuing program about the status of your case and its timing. The agency’s process, not a general government-wide schedule, determines what happens next.
