What RTP Means in Online Slots and How to Compare Games

RTP is a slot’s theoretical long-run return percentage, not a prediction of your winnings. Compare each game’s disclosed RTP alongside volatility and its exact configuration.

RTP means “return to player”: the theoretical share of wagers a slot is designed to pay back over a very large number of plays. It is not a promise about what you will win in a session, or on your next spin. To compare slots, check each game’s own published theoretical RTP and consider its volatility separately.

What does RTP mean in online slots?

The UK Gambling Commission defines theoretical RTP as the percentage a game is designed to return; under its guidance, this is also the advertised RTP shown in player-facing rules. For example, a game with a theoretical RTP of 96% is designed to return £96 for every £100 wagered over a sufficiently large number of plays. That describes the game’s long-run design, not an individual player’s result or a guarantee that any particular £100 of wagers will produce £96 in winnings.

RTP is a proportion of total stakes, not a share of deposits or a measure of how much a player will have left after a session. In play, winnings may be wagered again, adding to total turnover. The Commission’s definition and explanation are in its guidance on live return-to-player performance monitoring.

Does RTP tell you what you will win?

No. Theoretical RTP applies across a very large number of plays. Results over a shorter period can be higher or lower, and the Commission explains that the number of games measured and the game’s volatility affect the tolerance around theoretical RTP. A short run of wins or losses does not show that a game’s designed RTP has changed.

The Commission illustrates the difference using a game designed at 91.68% RTP. In its example, over one month, the game had £1,200,000 in turnover and £1,085,000 in wins. Dividing wins by turnover gives an actual RTP of 90.42%. Those figures are from a regulatory worked example, not an industry benchmark or a forecast of an individual player’s outcome.

Theoretical RTP and actual RTP are different measures

  • Theoretical RTP: the game’s designed long-run return percentage, as stated in its player-facing rules.
  • Actual RTP: observed wins divided by turnover over a selected measurement period. It describes recorded results for that period, not a player’s expected session return.

The Commission’s monitoring guidance explains these measures and the effect of the measurement period in its live RTP performance monitoring guidance.

How is RTP different from volatility?

RTP is a percentage; volatility describes how variable outcomes may be. The Commission says volatility is commonly represented by standard deviation. Higher volatility can mean potentially very large but rare prizes, while lower volatility tends toward smaller, more frequent prizes. A similar RTP therefore does not mean two slots will produce similar patterns of wins.

The Commission’s separate guidance on gaming machine categories describes RTP as an average over many games and notes that volatility can make returns vary during a typical session. That page concerns regulated gaming machines; it is not a complete statement of online-slot disclosure rules in every jurisdiction.

Where can you find a slot’s RTP?

Look in the rules or help information for the specific game you intend to play. PokerStars’ help page instructs players to open a game’s Rules or Help section to find its RTP. That is an operator-specific direction, not a universal interface: labels and navigation can differ between operators and games.

Check the exact game configuration as well as its name. A title should not be assumed to have one universal RTP across every market or operator. If the game offers multiple configurations, use the disclosure that applies to the version available to you. PokerStars’ explanation is available in its Return to Player (RTP) help page.

How to compare online slots fairly

  1. Identify the specific game. Record its name and the configuration offered by the operator, along with the market or operator where you found it.
  2. Find its theoretical RTP. Open that game’s Rules or Help information and record the disclosed percentage and where you found it.
  3. Note volatility separately. If the game publishes a volatility label or measure, record it. Do not treat volatility as another RTP percentage.
  4. Record when you checked. Include the date, since a comparison is only as reliable as the disclosure and configuration checked at that time.
  5. Compare like with like. Compare theoretical RTP figures as long-run design values; use volatility to understand the potential variation in outcomes. Do not use a short run of personal results as evidence that the RTP has changed.
Comparison field What to record Why it matters
Game and configuration Title and the version/configuration offered A game’s name alone may not identify the exact RTP disclosure.
Theoretical RTP Published percentage from the game’s rules This is the long-run designed return, not a session forecast.
Disclosure location Rules or Help section and operator Lets you verify which game disclosure the figure came from.
Volatility Published label or measure, if available Adds context about outcome variability, separate from RTP.
Market and date checked Relevant market/operator and the date you checked Keeps the comparison tied to the version and disclosure actually reviewed.
