A long-term loan is a loan repaid over an extended period, but the phrase does not describe one specific product or set of rules. A longer schedule can reduce each required payment while keeping the debt—and its cost—around for longer. Compare the APR, fees, payment schedule, total scheduled repayment, rate terms, and consequences of missed payments before choosing an offer.
What counts as a long-term loan?
In everyday use, “long-term loan” can refer to installment borrowing with a repayment period longer than a borrower might choose for a short-term loan. It may describe different products, including auto loans and personal installment loans; the label alone does not tell you the interest rate, fees, collateral requirements, or repayment length. Read the actual offer and agreement rather than relying on the label.
The phrase also has a narrower regulatory meaning in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Payday Lending Rule. In that rule, a “longer-term loan” generally meets specified cost-of-credit and payment-mechanism tests, subject to exclusions and exemptions. This technical category is not a universal definition of long-term debt or a cap on the APR of every loan. See the CFPB’s Payday Lending Rule resources and its Payday Lending Rule FAQ for the rule’s scope.
How a longer repayment term changes the trade-off
Stretching repayment can make scheduled payments smaller, but it also means the debt remains outstanding for longer. The payment amount by itself does not show whether an offer is affordable overall. Compare the required payment with the full scheduled repayment and borrowing costs, and check whether the payment schedule fits your budget for the entire term.

Installment loans such as auto or cash loans can be scheduled as monthly payments and amortized in full if payments are made on schedule, as described in the CFPB Taskforce report. That does not establish one standard cost or rate for long-term loans: the amount you repay depends on the particular loan terms and your payment history.
What to compare across loan offers
Compare offers using the same amount borrowed and repayment assumptions where possible. The Federal Trade Commission advises: “Use the APR to compare the cost of borrowing money from different lenders.” APR is useful for comparing borrowing costs, but read the agreement for fees and terms that matter to your situation as well.

| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| APR and finance charge | Review the stated APR and finance charge, then identify any fees included or charged separately. |
| Payment schedule and term | Check each payment’s amount and timing, how many payments are scheduled, and the total amount scheduled for repayment. |
| Rate type | Find out whether the rate is fixed or can change. A fixed rate generally stays the same during the loan term, according to the FDIC. |
| Other charges | Read the agreement for late-payment, returned-payment, or extension fees. |
| Collateral and default | Determine whether the loan is secured by property and what the agreement says can happen if you do not repay as agreed. |
| Availability and eligibility | Check lender requirements and whether the product is available in your state. Lending laws and eligibility vary. |
A calculator can help you work through payment or cost scenarios, but it cannot replace the lender’s disclosures. Use the actual offer and agreement for the contractual rate, charges, schedule, and total repayment.
Understand collateral and missed-payment consequences
With a secured loan, the lender may be able to take the collateral if you fail to repay as agreed. For a car-title loan, the FTC warns that a borrower who cannot repay may lose the vehicle. Before signing, identify what property secures the loan and consider whether losing it would create a serious problem for you.

Do not confuse long-term debt with the Payday Lending Rule
The CFPB’s rule covers certain loans, not every loan with an extended repayment term. For specified longer-term loans, coverage generally requires a cost of credit above 36% APR and a leveraged payment mechanism, with exclusions and exemptions that can affect the result. In the CFPB FAQ, a leveraged payment mechanism is part of the rule’s technical coverage test; the test should not be read as a general endorsement of a loan or as a universal APR limit. The FAQ is dated 2020, so check the current rule text and applicable law for a particular product or legal question.

If you are considering a payday or car-title loan, the FTC lists several possible alternatives. Whether any option is available or less expensive depends on your circumstances and its actual terms.
- Ask creditors for more time to pay or discuss a payment arrangement.
- Check with a credit union or community bank about available borrowing options.
- Contact a nonprofit credit counselor for help reviewing your situation.
The FTC’s payday-loan example shows why short-term, high-cost borrowing needs to be evaluated on its own terms—not treated as representative of all long-term loans. It describes a typical two-week payday loan charging $15 per $100 borrowed as carrying a 391% APR. In its illustration, borrowing $500 for two weeks at that charge results in a $75 fee; rolling the loan over once adds another $75 fee, while the original $500 remains owed. Those figures are the FTC’s example, not an estimate of long-term loan costs or a current market average. The FTC also compared payday borrowing with a credit-card average APR of just under 21% in the first quarter of 2023; that is a historical comparison, not a current rate.
Check the terms that depend on your location
State lending laws, lender licensing, product availability, eligibility, and live offers can vary. The federal rule’s coverage test does not resolve whether a particular loan is lawful or suitable in your state. Verify current state requirements and the lender’s disclosures before you agree to borrow.
