Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments increased by 2.5% in 2025. Social Security’s higher payments began in January 2025; the first increased SSI payments went out on December 31, 2024. The figures below describe the historical 2025 adjustment, not a promise of how much any one person received.
How much did Social Security increase in 2025?
The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2025. It was calculated from the increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) between the third quarters of 2023 and 2024. The adjustment applied to Social Security benefits and SSI payments. SSA’s October 2024 announcement and its 2025 COLA fact sheet explain the rate and its basis.
A percentage raises an underlying amount; it does not give every recipient the same dollar increase. As a simple illustration, 2.5% of $1,000 is $25. That is arithmetic, not an individual benefit estimate: a recipient’s actual payment depends on their benefit amount and other circumstances.
When did the 2025 COLA take effect?
Social Security benefits reflecting the adjustment were payable beginning in January 2025. SSI payments increased beginning December 31, 2024. SSA said the change would affect more than 72.5 million people receiving Social Security and SSI payments. The October 10, 2024 announcement gives those dates and the agency’s estimate of the number affected.

What were the estimated benefit amounts?
SSA’s fact sheet gave estimated average monthly amounts for January 2025. These are group averages and rounded estimates, not the exact payment every person received.
| Benefit group or measure | Before 2025 COLA | After 2025 COLA | What the figures represent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retired workers | $1,927 | $1,976 | SSA’s estimated average monthly benefit for January 2025 |
| Disabled workers | $1,542 | $1,580 | SSA’s estimated average monthly benefit for January 2025 |
SSA estimated that retirement benefits would rise by about $50 per month on average. A person’s increase could be more or less, because the adjustment is applied to their own benefit rather than setting everyone’s payment at the average. See the 2025 COLA fact sheet for the estimates.

How did the adjustment apply to SSI?
SSI is a needs-based program with its own federal payment standards; it should not be treated as identical to Social Security retirement or disability benefits. For 2025, SSA listed a federal monthly payment standard of $967 for an eligible individual and $1,450 for an eligible couple when both members qualified. A person’s actual SSI payment can vary with individual circumstances. The standards appear in the SSA 2025 COLA fact sheet.
What did later statistics show?
SSA’s 2025 Annual Statistical Supplement reported 68.5 million people receiving Social Security Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) benefits in December 2024. It reported average monthly benefits for that month of $1,975 for retired workers, $1,581 for disabled workers, and $1,832 for nondisabled widows and widowers. These are December averages reported later, so they are not the same measure as the fact sheet’s estimated January 2025 amounts. SSA’s 2025 Annual Statistical Supplement provides the December figures.

What changed besides monthly benefits?
The SSA fact sheet also lists the 2025 maximum taxable earnings for Social Security (OASDI) as $176,100, up from $168,600 in 2024. This is the annual earnings threshold used for Social Security payroll taxes, not a cap on the monthly benefit a person can receive. The Medicare portion of payroll taxes has no taxable earnings limit. SSA’s fact sheet provides the thresholds.

The 2.5% figure is the 2025 adjustment. SSA lists a 2.8% COLA for 2026, first payable in January 2026. For the current adjustment and prior-year rates, consult SSA’s COLA effect page. For context, the 2024 COLA was 3.2%, according to the 2024 SSA fact sheet.
