What to Know Before Shopping at a New Supermarket: Loyalty, Returns, and Delivery

A first-shop checklist for comparing loyalty benefits, returns and quality policies, and the real cost and conditions of grocery delivery.

Every supermarket sets its own rules, so check the store’s current local terms before you count on a discount, refund, or delivery fee. For a lower-surprise first shop, verify three things: whether your loyalty account is linked to the channel you’ll use, how to report a quality or order problem, and what delivery or collection will cost at checkout.

Compare the full shop, not just shelf prices

If you are choosing between supermarkets, build the same sample basket at each and compare the final checkout total. Include any discounts you can actually access, delivery or collection charges, and fees triggered by a small basket. Also compare the practical terms that can change the value of the shop:

  • Loyalty: Is enrollment free? Is a card required, or can you use an account or phone number? Must discounts be activated? Do online and in-store prices or rewards differ? Check whether points expire, what happens after a return, and what data the program collects or shares.
  • Returns and order problems: Which products are covered, how quickly must you report a quality issue, and does the store offer a refund, replacement, or credit? Check proof-of-purchase requirements, substitution and missing-item procedures, and the consumer rights that apply where you live.
  • Delivery and collection: Is your address covered? What are the fee, time slot, and basket minimum? Check below-minimum, express, bag, and missed-delivery charges, plus any separate collection minimum. A delivery pass may have qualifying spend or slot restrictions.

These are comparison questions, not universal supermarket rules. The retailer’s current local policy and checkout determine the terms for your order.

Check loyalty terms before relying on a discount

A loyalty scheme can affect more than the price shown on a shelf. Some offers require you to enroll, identify yourself at checkout, or activate a deal; online benefits may also depend on linking the correct account. Confirm the arrangement before building your budget around a member price.

Confirm that your account works in the channel you plan to use

Safeway’s US online terms illustrate why account linking matters: they say online and in-store benefits typically connect when shoppers provide loyalty information during online registration. The terms also describe a virtual loyalty number that may give online price discounts without making other online-earned benefits available through an existing in-store account. Online discounts can differ from in-store discounts, and a partner banner fulfilling an online order may set that order’s prices and rewards. This is a Safeway-specific example, not a rule for other retailers. Read Safeway’s special terms, then check the chosen store’s account-registration details and test that the account is recognized before paying.

Consider the data trade-off

A loyalty price is also an exchange of information for benefits. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Supermarkets Inquiry 2024–2025 Interim Report describes concerns about unclear program terms and privacy disclosures, changes to terms, consumer control over data sharing, and third-party targeted advertising. The report concerns Australian consumer and competition issues; it does not establish that every supermarket or program has the same practices.

The interim report refers to approximately 2,000 reports about loyalty programs received by Australian Consumer Law regulators, a historical figure from the ACCC’s 2019 report covering the five years to December 2018—not a current annual count. Before joining, read the program’s privacy notice and look for what data is collected, whether it is shared, and what choices you have about marketing. See the ACCC interim report.

Find out how the supermarket handles refunds and quality problems

Do not assume grocery returns work like returns for general merchandise. Rules can vary by product, retailer, and jurisdiction; food that is unsafe or deteriorates quickly may have different reporting conditions from a non-perishable item. Before shopping, find the store’s help or returns page and note the reporting window, acceptable remedies, and any evidence you should keep, such as the receipt or order details.

Use the policy that applies to the product and problem

ASDA’s UK grocery terms provide one retailer-specific example. They distinguish non-perishable goods reported as damaged, faulty, mis-described, or incomplete from goods liable to deteriorate or expire rapidly. For the latter, the stated quality policy calls for contacting ASDA before the indicated use-by or best-before date, or within seven days for loose goods without such a date. Those timings are ASDA’s terms, not a general UK or international deadline. The terms also say applicable UK or national consumer legislation and manufacturer guarantees are not affected. Check ASDA’s UK grocery terms and the law that applies to your purchase.

ASDA also describes a separate “Try Me Love Me” promise for qualifying own-brand products carrying that packaging mark: the shopper contacts customer service for a refund and an e-voucher of equivalent value toward a replacement on a later online shop. It is a named, retailer-specific promise, not a general entitlement.

Report online order errors through the store’s process

For a delivery or collection order, check how the supermarket handles missing items, substitutions, damaged goods, and products you consider unsuitable. The relevant process may differ from bringing an in-store purchase to a customer-service desk. Keep the order confirmation and follow the retailer’s stated reporting route and deadline; do not assume a particular remedy until the store confirms it.

Calculate delivery or collection cost at checkout

The headline delivery fee is only one part of the cost. Check whether your address and chosen products are eligible, whether a slot is available, the basket minimum, charges below that minimum, and any express or other add-on fee. A free or low-fee slot may still be poor value if it requires extra items you would not otherwise buy. Collection can have different thresholds and charges from home delivery.

Compare thresholds and below-minimum charges

Tesco’s UK grocery terms give a time-sensitive example: they state a £50 minimum basket for home delivery and £25 for Click+Collect, with a £5 charge when the basket is below the relevant minimum. The terms say the charge is added at checkout, removed if the basket is increased above the threshold before confirmation, and refunded if the entire shop is refunded—but not if only some items are refunded. Check Tesco’s current terms and the amount shown at checkout before placing an order; do not apply these figures to another retailer. Read Tesco’s UK grocery terms.

Check what “free delivery” or a pass actually includes

For Walmart+ in the US, scheduled store delivery advertised with a $0 fee requires an order of at least $35 and an eligible, available time slot under the cited terms. A below-minimum order may incur a fee. Eligibility can depend on the items, inventory, delivery address, and slot; membership benefits for unscheduled deliveries also have item and seller restrictions. Treat “free delivery” as conditional and verify what applies to the specific basket and slot. See Walmart+ terms.

ASDA’s UK Delivery Pass terms describe unlimited standard deliveries subject to limitations, exclude express deliveries, require at least £40 in qualifying spend, and say slots are not guaranteed. The terms also address opting in or out of automatic renewal and advance notice before renewal. A pass is worth considering only after checking its current price and conditions against the number and size of orders you expect to place. Review ASDA’s UK delivery terms.

For any retailer, compare the pass fee with the delivery charges you would otherwise actually pay, while accounting for qualifying basket sizes and the slots you can use. Do not count unavailable slots or orders below the pass’s qualifying spend as savings. Verify the address, eligible service, fees, and final total on the checkout screen before paying.
