How to Recover an NFT Sent to the Wrong Wallet or Network

Recovery depends on who controls the NFT’s current address. Verify ownership on the right network before trying a wallet display fix, contacting the recipient, or opening official platform support.

You can recover an NFT only if you can access the address that currently owns it, its owner agrees to send it back, or a custodian can help. First check the transaction and current owner on the block explorer for the network used. If the NFT is already at your address but missing from your wallet, the fix may be to select the right network or import the NFT’s contract address and token ID. A confirmed transfer generally cannot be undone by the sender.

First, verify where the NFT went

A missing image in a wallet or marketplace does not by itself mean an NFT is lost. Check the transaction on the block explorer for the network on which you sent it. Confirm whether the transaction is pending, failed, or confirmed, and inspect the NFT’s current owner on that same chain.

Record the transaction hash, network, destination address, NFT contract address, and token ID. Make sure the explorer is showing the exact address and chain involved; checking a different network can lead you to the wrong conclusion about ownership.

What to do based on the transaction and destination

If the transaction is still pending

Use only the sending wallet’s official transaction controls. Whether you can speed up or cancel a pending transaction depends on the wallet and the transaction’s state. Do not follow instructions from unsolicited messages claiming they can cancel or recover it for you.

If the NFT is at your address but does not appear

  1. Select the network used for the transfer. A wallet may be displaying a different network from the one where the NFT is held.
  2. Check ownership on that network’s explorer. Confirm that the destination address shown there is yours and is listed as the NFT’s current owner.
  3. Import the NFT if your wallet supports it. MetaMask documents manual NFT import using the collection contract address and token ID. Use the correct values for the NFT and network.

Importing makes an NFT already held at your address visible in the wallet; it does not move an NFT from another address or change its owner.

If it went to your address on another EVM-compatible network

Check whether you control the same address on the network where the NFT was sent. If you do, select or add that network in a suitable wallet and check the address on its explorer. MetaMask describes this route for compatible networks, but wallet and NFT support can vary.

If it went to a non-EVM network or another wallet you control

Do not assume the same address-based recovery path applies. Address behavior differs between non-EVM networks and EVM-compatible networks. Confirm that you control the destination address on the specific chain before trying to access the NFT; an address on one network does not necessarily correspond to an address on another.

If it went to someone else’s wallet

Contact the current owner and ask them to transfer it back. A return is a new transfer made by the current owner, not a reversal initiated by the original sender. If you do not know who controls the address, the fact that a transfer is visible on-chain does not give you control over the recipient’s wallet.

If it went to a smart contract

Inspect the destination and contact the project only through its official website or support channel. Recovery depends on whether the contract or project has a way to handle the NFT; there is no guarantee that it can be returned.

If it went to an exchange or other custodial platform

Open a support case through the platform’s official channel. Include the transaction hash, network, NFT contract address, token ID, and destination address. The platform controls the relevant account or address and must determine whether it can help. Do not assume that a recovery service for certain unsupported cryptocurrencies also covers NFTs.

If the blockchain and marketplace disagree

If the relevant explorer shows that you still own the NFT but OpenSea lists someone else, the mismatch may be a platform display or indexing issue rather than a change in on-chain ownership. OpenSea advises allowing for indexing delay and refreshing the page. If the transfer is successful on-chain but the listing still shows the wrong owner, contact OpenSea support to ask about re-syncing its view.

Why a confirmed transfer usually cannot be undone

OpenSea’s Help Center says, “Once it’s been sent, you won’t be able to undo it.” That describes the sender’s inability to reverse a completed transfer through OpenSea; it does not prevent a recipient from voluntarily sending the NFT back or establish that a custodian can never help with an asset at an address it controls. The statement appears in OpenSea’s transfer guide, published March 12, 2026.

Protect yourself from recovery scams

Someone who promises guaranteed recovery, demands urgent action, asks for a fee, or requests an unexplained wallet signature may be trying to steal your assets. Phishing messages can imitate platform support or invent a buyer problem, failed transaction, or “digitizing fee.”

  • Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase. MetaMask says it will not ask for it.
  • Go to a wallet, marketplace, or exchange’s official website directly, using a known bookmark or typing the address yourself. Do not rely on a social-media account or a link in an unsolicited message.
  • Do not connect a wallet or sign a transaction just because someone says it is necessary to recover an NFT. Understand what a requested action does before approving it.
  • OpenSea says it does not provide official support through social DMs; use its Help Center instead.
