For a musician whose Instagram account is centered on the artist and music, a Creator account is a sensible starting point—but it is not automatically the right choice for every act. Both Creator and Business are professional account types with artist-useful tools and analytics. Choose based on the music options and rights needed for your content, whether brand-collaboration tools matter, and the business contact or sales workflows you use.
What Creator and Business accounts have in common
Both are professional account types, and both can provide useful tools and analytics for musicians. WIPO’s 2024 guide to making a living from music describes data about posts and followers, including profile visits, shares, and when followers are typically online. Treat those examples as a 2024 description, not a guarantee of today’s exact Instagram interface or metrics. WIPO, How to Make a Living from Music (2024).
Creator was introduced in 2019 with features aimed at influencers; WIPO notes those features can also be useful to music creators. That makes Creator a reasonable fit for an artist-led profile, but does not establish that it is best for every musician.
When a musician may prefer Creator
Creator is worth considering when the account primarily represents an individual artist or music project and creator-brand collaborations are part of the plan. Instagram Creator Marketplace offers a documented route for eligible creators to connect with brands. In Meta’s February 21, 2024 description, creators join through the professional dashboard, can indicate relevant brands and interests, and may receive partnership opportunities. Meta said creators could review opportunity details, requirements, and rates in the app. Access and availability may change by region and over time, so check the current app. Meta Newsroom, “Making it Easier for Brands and Creators to Collaborate on Instagram”.
#1 Best Overall
Creator Marketplace is a collaboration workflow, not a promise of sponsorships or income. A musician should weigh it alongside the actual features and workflows they use.
When a musician may prefer Business
Business may fit better if the account’s day-to-day job is managing an organization’s operations, customer inquiries, or sales. The available evidence does not establish a complete, current feature-by-feature comparison of Creator and Business, so do not assume that one type provides a particular contact, commerce, or operational feature without checking the current Instagram settings and help information for your account.

Can Business accounts use music on Instagram?
Not every account or post type necessarily has access to Instagram’s licensed music library. A surfaced Instagram Help Center excerpt says certain business accounts and certain post types do not have access. This is not evidence that all Business accounts are excluded, and having access to a track in the app does not by itself prove that it is cleared for every commercial use.
Before publishing, check the specific track’s availability for your account and intended post, and confirm that your use complies with the relevant rights and licensing terms. Creator status should not be treated as blanket permission to use popular music commercially.

A practical way to choose
- Check the music first. For the formats and uses you expect—such as a promotional clip, performance video, or branded post—verify the music options shown for your account and whether the intended use is permitted.
- Decide whether creator-brand tools matter. If you expect to pursue brand partnerships, see whether Creator Marketplace is available to you and whether its workflow fits your plans.
- Match the account to your operations. If contact, sales, or other business-oriented workflows are central, verify the specific features you need in the current app rather than relying on a broad account-type comparison.
- Reassess when your work changes. A musician’s priorities can shift from artist promotion to managing a larger business. Revisit the choice when your workflow changes, not because a switch is assumed to improve reach.
There is no supported basis here for saying that either account type automatically improves reach or guarantees particular music access. Make the decision around the functions you actually need.

A smartphone is usually adequate for making short videos, and WIPO advises keeping the phone or camera steady. A tripod is one practical way to do that, though it is an accessory suggestion rather than a tested or endorsed product recommendation. WIPO, How to Make a Living from Music (2024).
