How to Estimate a Pokémon Card’s Value Using Recent Sales

Compare several recent completed sales for the exact Pokémon card, keeping raw and graded copies separate and adjusting for condition, date, and market.

Estimate a Pokémon card’s value by comparing several recent completed sales for the exact same card and printing, in a similar condition, and in the same raw or graded category. Treat the result as a market range—not a guaranteed sale price. An active listing shows what a seller is asking, not what a buyer has paid.

Identify the exact card before looking up prices

Small differences can separate cards that look nearly identical but sell for different amounts. Record the card’s name, set, printed card number, language, and any printing or finish variation. Check details such as the set symbol, copyright line, and whether the card is holographic or has another distinctive finish.

Use comparisons for the same version whenever possible. eBay says its Price Guide matches a card to the same card and, when available, the same grade. The guide supports popular trading-card games including Pokémon in English and Japanese; its availability is limited to the US. eBay’s Price Guide overview describes its matching and sales data.

Keep raw and graded sales separate

A raw card is ungraded and not sealed in a professional grading holder. A graded card has been evaluated and encapsulated by a grading company. These are different comparison groups: do not use graded sales to price a raw copy, or combine cards with different grades into one unqualified average.

  • For a graded card: Compare the same grading company and numeric grade when possible. A grade from one company is not automatically interchangeable with the same number from another.
  • For a raw card: Compare sales described in similar condition. Read the listing details and inspect photos rather than relying only on a seller’s condition label.

Assess the copy’s condition

Before comparing a raw card with sale records, inspect its centering, corners, edges, surface, gloss, stains, creases, folds, and other damage. PSA distinguishes authentication—verifying that a card is genuine—from grading, which assesses quality and condition. Its grading standards describe criteria such as sharp corners, focus, gloss, staining, and centering, while noting that eye appeal can require subjective judgment at the margins.

PSA states, “A PSA Gem Mint 10 card is a virtually perfect card.” That definition is not a promise that a card that looks clean to its owner will receive a 10; a visual inspection is not an official grade. PSA’s Getting Started With Grading guide also recommends a penny sleeve and semi-rigid holder for protection. Those supplies can help protect a card during handling, but they are not needed to search sales or estimate value.

Use completed sales, not asking prices

Search completed or sold transactions for the closest matches. An unsold asking price does not establish what a buyer paid. eBay says its Price Guide is based on completed eBay sales and includes accepted Best Offer prices in its median sold price, rather than treating the original asking price as the transaction amount.

The guide displays median sold prices, transaction details, and historical trends covering up to two years of completed transactions. eBay says the data is updated every 24 hours. These are guide features, not a promise that every card has enough comparable sales for a reliable estimate.

Build a reasonable estimate from comparable sales

  1. Search the exact identity. Use the card name, set, number, language, and printing or finish details to narrow results.
  2. Filter by state. Separate raw from graded cards; for graded cards, match company and grade as closely as possible.
  3. Review several recent transactions. Note sale dates and prices, and check that each record is for one card rather than a lot or bundle.
  4. Remove poor comparisons. Exclude different printings, grades, languages, or visibly different conditions. Do not let an unusually damaged copy or a mismatched listing set the estimate.
  5. Summarize the close matches. Use the remaining sales to state a plausible range or a central estimate. Avoid false precision when the comparable sales are few or inconsistent.

When sharing the estimate, state the currency, relevant market, and date range of the sales you used. Prices can change with condition, timing, demand, and marketplace, so a past transaction is evidence—not a guaranteed amount you will receive.

Understand what a price guide can and cannot tell you

eBay says its Price Guide currently is available only in the US, draws primarily on eBay sales, and updates every 24 hours. Its history can include up to two years of completed transactions. That makes it a useful reference for supported cards and its own marketplace, but not a universal global price or a real-time guarantee. If you are buying or selling outside the US, or through another marketplace, make the market and currency explicit and avoid presenting an eBay figure as a worldwide value.

PSA publishes approximate grade distributions across broad card populations, but those figures do not predict the grade or value of an individual Pokémon card. A card’s likely value still depends on its exact identity, condition or grade, and comparable transactions.
