UPI is designed to authorize instant transfers between bank accounts, but it is not risk-free: people can be tricked into approving payments, revealing a UPI PIN, trusting a fake link, or installing an unsafe app. The most important rule is simple: a PIN authorizes a payment; it is never needed to receive money. Check the recipient and amount in your payment app before approving anything.

How safe is UPI?

UPI is an instant payment system that transfers money between bank accounts. A UPI PIN is a four- to six-digit passcode used to authorize transactions, according to NPCI’s UPI FAQ. That authorization step helps ensure a transfer requires user approval, but it cannot stop someone from persuading a user to approve the wrong payment or disclose a PIN.

NPCI’s guidance is direct: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” It also says a bank’s customer support will never ask for it. A request for your PIN from someone claiming to be a bank, payment-app, or government representative is a warning sign.

Common UPI risks and how to avoid them

Fake rewards, cashback, and payment links

A link or message promising cashback, a prize, or a refund may lead to a deceptive payment request or a page designed to obtain sensitive information. NPCI lists fake cashback links and other misleading offers among its fraud-awareness examples. Do not follow an unsolicited payment link to claim a reward. Open your payment app independently, and check what action it is asking you to authorize.

Deceptive QR codes

Scanning a QR code and entering your UPI PIN can send money; it does not collect a reward or receive money. The Government of India’s Financial Transactions: Safe Practices manual states that a UPI PIN is not needed to receive payments and advises checking the payee name or QR code before proceeding.

Before approving a QR-code transaction, verify the recipient and amount shown in the app. If the screen asks for a PIN, treat it as authorization to pay—not proof that money is coming to you.

Impersonation, threats, and fake support

Scammers may impersonate services in search results, post fake grievance or support messages on social media, or send threatening SMS and chat messages to pressure someone into acting quickly. NPCI also warns about fake investment schemes and unknown app downloads. Do not rely on a callback number supplied in an unsolicited message or post; find support through your bank’s or payment app’s own official channels.

Unknown apps and device access

Do not install an app or follow screen-sharing or payment instructions supplied by an unexpected caller or message. Use a strong passcode to lock your phone and payment app, as recommended by the Government of India manual. These steps reduce exposure to mistakes and unauthorized access, but they cannot guarantee protection from every scam.

Can someone take money if I scan a QR code?

Scanning alone is not the same as authorizing a transfer. The risk is that a deceptive QR code may lead you to a payment flow, and entering your PIN can authorize the payment shown. Read the app’s confirmation screen carefully: check whether it says you are paying or sending money, confirm the payee name, and verify the amount before entering your PIN.

A PIN is not required to receive money. If a person says you must scan a code and enter your PIN to accept a payment, cashback, or prize, stop and verify the request independently.

Does opening UPI or a bank app approve an unexpected deposit?

No. In a clarification dated January 13, 2025, NPCI said that simply opening a UPI or bank app does not automatically approve a transaction. Its explanation says a user must navigate to a payment request, explicitly select “pay,” and authorize it with a UPI PIN. NPCI also described the payment or withdrawal as a separate transaction, rather than something triggered just by opening the app. Read the confirmation screen before approving any request; an unexpected notification alone is not a reason to enter your PIN.

What to check before authorizing a UPI transaction

  • Who initiated it? Be more cautious with an unexpected request or a payment instruction from an unsolicited contact.
  • What does the screen say? Distinguish a pay/send action from a receive/collect claim. A request for your PIN authorizes a transaction.
  • Is the payee correct? Check the displayed recipient name, including when paying through a QR code.
  • Is the amount right? Confirm the amount in the payment app before you approve.
  • Is the request trustworthy? Treat rewards, threats, unknown apps, and unexpected links as reasons to pause and verify.

What to do if your phone is lost

  1. Contact your bank promptly and follow its instructions for protecting the account and linked UPI access.
  2. Ask your mobile operator to block the lost phone’s linked mobile number, following NPCI’s lost-phone guidance.
  3. Use a strong device and payment-app passcode whenever you regain access to your accounts.

Do not wait for an unauthorized transaction to appear before contacting your bank about a lost phone.

What to do about a pending, failed, or unauthorized transaction

Pending or failed payment

Pending means payment confirmation has not arrived; it is not the same as a confirmed successful payment. Check the current transaction status in your app and whether your bank account shows a debit. For a pending or failed transaction, use the app’s help or complaint route and keep the transaction reference. NPCI’s UPI guidance says a technical issue can cause a failure and a debited amount should be returned, but timing and handling can vary by transaction, app, bank, and applicable rules. Follow the status and instructions shown by your app and bank rather than assuming every reversal arrives on a fixed schedule.

NPCI says users can check status or raise a complaint through the participating bank’s UPI app. Its UPI HELP guidance also describes in-app complaint handling for transaction issues. If a debit has not been resolved according to the bank’s instructions, contact the bank directly.

Suspected fraud or an unauthorized transaction

Contact your bank promptly if a transaction appears unauthorized or you suspect fraud. NPCI’s complaint guidance directs fraud and unauthorized-transaction complaints to the customer’s bank; NPCI’s UPI HELP guidelines make the same distinction. Report the facts and provide the transaction reference if available. Do not assume that a particular reimbursement or liability outcome applies: the sources cited here do not establish a customer’s reimbursement entitlement or deadline.
