You can usually receive a UPI payment by sharing your UPI ID (also called a Virtual Payment Address, or VPA) or your UPI QR code instead of giving the payer your phone number. These options avoid using your number as the payment address; they do not make the transaction anonymous.
Choose what to share
| Payment route | What you share | Practical considerations |
|---|---|---|
| UPI ID or VPA | Your payment address, rather than your phone number. | The payer enters it in their app. Confirm the payee details and amount shown before approving. |
| UPI QR code | Your QR code, which the payer scans to route the payment. | BHIM supports sharing a static QR. The payer should still check the payee and amount in their app. |
| Account number and IFSC | Your bank account details. | NPCI describes this as a separate transfer route; availability depends on the app and bank services enabled. It is not the default UPI-ID or QR method. |
NPCI lists UPI ID and QR scan among BHIM’s send-money methods and says users can view and share their static QR and payment addresses: BHIM UPI app overview. Its UPI FAQ also describes transfers using account number and IFSC.
Find and share your UPI ID or QR
-
Open your UPI app and look in the profile, account, or payment section for your UPI ID/VPA or personal QR code. App layouts differ. NPCI’s BHIM-UPI guideline, updated 4 June 2026, says a partner app should display a user-specific UPI QR on the profile page with the UPI ID beneath it: BHIM-UPI guidelines.
-
Give the payer the UPI ID or send the QR image. You do not need to provide your phone number as the payment address.

-
Ask the payer to check the recipient or payee details and the amount displayed before authorizing the transfer.
-
Keep your UPI PIN to yourself. NPCI states in its FAQ: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” The PIN authorizes bank transactions; it is not needed by someone sending you money.

BHIM: disable the phone-number-based UPI ID
NPCI documents a BHIM-specific privacy control for users who have created a secondary UPI ID. In BHIM, create a secondary ID, then use the profile privacy control to disable mobilenumber@upi. NPCI says the QR associated with that disabled ID is disabled too, so share the active secondary UPI ID or its QR instead. See NPCI’s BHIM product overview for the documented feature.
This option is documented for BHIM; do not assume another UPI app has the same setting. Check that app’s current profile or privacy controls for its available choices.

What this does—and does not—hide
Sharing a UPI ID or QR keeps your phone number from being the payment address you give the payer. It does not establish that a UPI payment is anonymous. Your phone number may still be needed for app registration and linking the app to a bank account: NPCI says the bank-linked mobile number must match the number verified in the UPI app to fetch bank accounts. The number’s role in setup is separate from what you share to receive a payment.
