To watch a Premier League match on your phone while limiting cellular use, first find the licensed broadcaster for your country, then choose a lower-data or lower-quality playback setting in its app if one is available. On iPhone or iPad, Low Data Mode can also reduce streaming quality and background network activity. There is no reliable universal data-per-match figure: consumption depends on the broadcaster, playback quality and viewing time.
Find the authorized stream for your country
Premier League live rights are licensed by territory, so the service that carries a match depends on where you are. Check the Premier League’s official 2025–28 broadcast territory list for your country, then confirm with that broadcaster that it carries the match and supports viewing in its phone app. For example, the league lists Sky Sports and TNT Sports in the United Kingdom and NBC Sports in the United States; those examples do not establish coverage in other countries or guarantee that one provider shows every match.
The Premier League says in its official broadcast FAQ: “The Premier League doesn’t have a subscription service for watching on-demand, or for individual matches or those of one Club.” Use the licensed broadcaster for your location rather than assuming the league sells a single worldwide live-match subscription.
Choose the lowest practical quality in the broadcaster’s app
- Before kick-off, open the broadcaster’s official app and look in settings or playback options for a cellular-data control, data saver or video-quality selector. The exact label and availability vary by provider, device and app version.
- Select the lower-use option if offered. Expect a less detailed picture and, depending on the service, potentially lower audio quality. If the app has no suitable control, avoid assuming it will stream at a particular rate.
- Check your phone’s cellular usage after a short viewing session. Use the phone’s recorded use for that app as a more relevant planning guide than an estimate published by a different streaming service. This is a way to measure your own setup, not a guaranteed rate for the rest of the match.
- Use Wi-Fi when it is available and appropriate if you want to avoid using your mobile allowance for the stream.
Turn on Low Data Mode on iPhone or iPad
Apple says Low Data Mode generally restricts background network activity and reduces streaming quality. The route depends on your connection and device configuration: Apple documents a cellular-data setting for LTE/4G and a Data Mode setting for 5G. Check Apple’s Low Data Mode instructions for the current steps for your iPhone or iPad and carrier. This phone-level setting may help, but it does not replace a broadcaster’s playback controls or guarantee a specific amount of data saved.

Why there is no dependable EPL data-per-match number
The available published figures below belong to three different streaming services, not to a Premier League match broadcaster. They illustrate how much estimates can vary by service and selected quality; they are not directly comparable tests and should not be used as an EPL allowance forecast.
| Service and source | Published estimate | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Disney+ UK, Help Centre (2026) | Approximately 0.6 GB per hour on the mobile “Save data” setting | Disney+ says lower usage means slightly lower video and audio quality; this is not an EPL stream estimate. Source |
| DAZN Japan, Help (year not stated) | Approximately 450 MB per hour with Data Saver | Japan-specific service guidance; the setting reduces stream quality. It is not a universal DAZN or EPL rate. Source |
| Viaplay Customer Service (year not stated) | Approximate rates: Low 150 MB/hour; Medium 500 MB/hour; High 1.8 GB/hour; HD 2.5 GB/hour | These are Viaplay’s own quality labels and approximate figures, not measurements of a Premier League broadcaster. Source |
Actual consumption on a live match stream depends on the broadcaster, the quality selected or adapted during playback, the device and how long you watch. The cited services use their own settings and estimates, so multiplying one of these hourly figures by a match’s duration would not establish what an EPL stream will use.

Use less video if live viewing is not essential
If text updates are enough, the free Premier League app offers Matchday Live text coverage and highlights. The league’s app announcement describes verified live updates and links to official broadcasts. Text updates avoid continuous live video, although using the app and watching clips still consumes some data.
