Make product facts accurate, specific and consistent wherever shopping systems can find them: on the product page, in structured data and in merchant feeds. Identify each purchasable item and variant clearly, keep price and availability current, and use the documented data route for each platform. These steps help systems interpret products and can support eligibility, but no published source provides a formula or guarantees an AI recommendation.
What helps AI shopping systems understand a product?
Shopping systems need reliable information to identify an item, distinguish its variants and represent its offer. OpenAI says ChatGPT shopping results are selected for relevance to the user’s intent and may use structured metadata and other product information. For merchant listings, it names availability, price, quality and whether the merchant is the maker or primary seller among ranking considerations. Those are disclosed considerations, not a complete ranking formula or a promise that any one change will earn placement: OpenAI’s ChatGPT shopping help.
Google describes product structured data and Merchant Center feeds as ways to supply and verify product information, with different eligibility implications across its shopping experiences. None of this establishes a universal checklist that guarantees recommendations across platforms.
Build a reliable product record for every variant
Give purchasable variants stable identities
Start with one source of truth for each item a customer can buy. Assign it a stable identifier and map each variant to the correct product title, image, landing-page URL, price and availability. If a shopper selects a blue, medium-size version, the page and every connected data source should describe that same variant—not the default image or offer for another option.

OpenAI’s product-feed reference calls for a row per purchasable item or variant and describes stable item IDs and variant-specific product pages: OpenAI product feed specification.
Write descriptions that identify the item
Use a clear product name and factual, plain-language description. Include attributes that help distinguish the item—such as size, color, materials, compatibility or intended use—when they are relevant and verified. Avoid keyword stuffing and unsupported superlatives. OpenAI’s guidance for feed titles and descriptions is feed-specific; it should not be treated as a universal search-ranking rule.

Keep the offer aligned with the page
Check that price, currency, sale status, stock, seller identity and landing-page URL match the offer a customer can actually access. When these details change, update the appropriate feed promptly. OpenAI describes feeds as a source of current pricing, availability and seller context; Google documents feed options that give merchants more control over update timing. A feed and a landing page that disagree make it harder to represent the offer reliably.
Should you use product schema or a product feed?
They serve related but distinct purposes. Google supports product structured data on a page, Merchant Center feeds, or both. It says using both can maximize eligibility and help Google understand and verify product data; some experiences may combine information from both. A feed is not required for every Google Search result, but it is required for some surfaces, including the Shopping tab. See Google’s Product structured data documentation and Google’s Merchant Center product data guidance.
Rank #3
| Route | What it contributes | Constraint to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Product structured data on the page | Helps Google interpret page-level product facts and can make a page eligible for richer Search appearances. | It must match visible page content; markup alone does not guarantee a rich result. Google recommends initial-HTML markup for merchant shopping implementations. |
| Google Merchant Center feed | Gives Google an explicit catalog data source and is required for some surfaces, such as the Shopping tab. | Requires maintenance and policy compliance. Keep feed facts consistent with the landing page. |
| OpenAI Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) product feed | Provides structured catalog and promotion data for ChatGPT product discovery. | Feed onboarding is available to approved partners; access or product placement is not guaranteed. |
| Shopify Catalog integration | OpenAI says Shopify product data is integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog. | This route applies to Shopify merchants; it should not be assumed to cover other platforms or every product. |
Choose routes based on which shopping surfaces matter to your business, what data each route covers, how quickly it can be updated, the effort to maintain it and any eligibility requirements. Google notes that geography and device can affect its experiences. A feed for one platform does not automatically enroll a merchant in another.
How do I get products found in ChatGPT shopping?
OpenAI describes ACP product feeds as a way for merchants to provide catalog and promotion data for product discovery, but its integration guide says onboarding is for approved partners. Check the current requirements before planning around a direct feed integration: OpenAI commerce integration guides.
Rank #4
For Shopify merchants, OpenAI says product data is integrated through Shopify Catalog. OpenAI’s help article and announcement describe that route; they do not establish that every product will appear in every shopping response. See OpenAI’s Shopify shopping help and OpenAI’s shopping announcement.
Do not treat eligibility, integration or feed submission as a placement guarantee. OpenAI’s published information describes inputs and disclosed ranking considerations, not a complete recommendation algorithm.

Implement product markup so crawlers can read it
Use Product and Offer structured data that accurately describes the product and selected variant shown on the page. Do not add a review, rating, offer or attribute unless the visible page supports it. Google recommends placing Product structured data in the initial HTML for merchants optimizing across shopping results; JavaScript-generated markup can make Shopping crawls less frequent and less reliable, particularly for changing facts such as price and availability.
- Map the page to its data. Confirm that the marked-up product and offer correspond to the item and variant the page presents.
- Render markup for crawlers. Follow Google’s guidance for initial HTML rather than relying only on JavaScript-generated data for merchant shopping implementations.
- Validate after deployment. Check the deployed markup and use Google’s URL Inspection tools as part of implementation. Refer to Google’s Product structured data guidance and its structured data overview.
Audit the page with shopper questions
Use a human review to catch gaps and mismatches across the page, markup and feed. For each item, check whether someone could quickly determine:
- What is this product, and what distinguishes it?
- Which variant is being offered, and does its image and URL match?
- Who sells it?
- What is the current price and currency, and is it available?
- What is it compatible with or intended for, if applicable?
This is a practical content audit, not a description of any platform’s private scoring system. Review the same facts whenever a product, promotion, variant or inventory status changes.
Review AI-generated product content before publishing
AI can help draft product copy or metadata, but a person should verify the claims, variant details and policy-sensitive statements before release. Google specifically advises reviewing AI-generated page titles, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text for accuracy and trustworthiness. It also says AI-generated Merchant Center product title and description attributes must be specified separately and labeled as AI-generated. Follow Google’s guidance on generative AI content and applicable Merchant Center policies.
