Solana and XRP are not the same kind of thing: Solana is a blockchain network, and SOL is its native asset; XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL). Solana emphasizes general-purpose applications built from on-chain programs, while XRPL’s documented features foreground payments, exchange, and token issuance. Neither network is automatically better for every use, and fee figures alone do not establish which asset is a better investment.
Solana and XRP are different: network versus asset
Solana is the network; SOL is the token used natively on it. XRPL is the network; XRP is its native asset. This distinction matters because a comparison of network features is not the same as a comparison of the assets’ investment prospects.
Both networks support more than one use case. Their documented emphases differ: Solana transactions invoke programs to execute instructions, a flexible model for applications, while XRPL documentation highlights transfers, cross-currency payments, a decentralized exchange, and tokens. Solana’s transaction documentation and XRPL’s token documentation describe these capabilities.
What each network is designed to do
Solana: programs and composed application actions
A Solana transaction contains one or more instructions, signatures authorizing changes, and a recent blockhash. Programs process the instructions. Multiple instructions can be combined into one transaction, and if an instruction fails, the transaction’s account-state changes are rolled back. This supports general-purpose applications and composed on-chain actions. Solana’s documentation explains the transaction structure.

XRPL: payments, exchange, and token issuance
XRPL processes transactions into validated ledger versions. It supports XRP transfers, tokens, a decentralized exchange, and cross-currency payments. Its token documentation covers fungible trust-line tokens, Multi-Purpose Tokens (MPTs), and NFTs; it notes that MPTs remain in active development and do not have full feature parity with trust-line tokens. See XRPL’s token documentation.
For a cross-currency payment, XRPL can use available paths and offers in its decentralized exchange to convert between XRP and tokens. A usable path and sufficient liquidity are required; the system may route a token-to-token payment through XRP when that route is cheaper. That makes available liquidity and routing relevant to whether a payment can complete as intended. See XRPL’s cross-currency payment documentation.

How Solana and XRPL fees compare
The published protocol figures use different mechanics and units, so they do not establish a fixed U.S.-dollar winner.
| Network | Documented fee mechanic | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Solana | 5,000 lamports per signature as the documented base fee, plus an optional priority fee. | The priority fee is based on the requested compute-unit price and compute-unit limit; an unnecessarily high requested limit can cost more than the compute actually used. The fee is charged even if execution fails. |
| XRP Ledger | 10 drops (0.00001 XRP) as the documented minimum standard transaction cost. | This is a minimum, not a guaranteed charge under every network condition. Load can raise the cost required for relay or inclusion; lower-cost transactions may be ignored or queued. The transaction cost is destroyed rather than paid to a party. |
Solana’s base fee is per signature, and its priority fee is optional. Solana documentation says fees are deducted before execution; the base fee is split between burn and validator reward, while the priority fee goes to the validator. XRPL’s transaction cost is destroyed when a transaction is included in a validated ledger, including some failed transactions. Consult the current Solana fee documentation and XRPL transaction-cost documentation for protocol mechanics.

A fair live USD comparison would require the same date, transaction type, network conditions, and asset-price conversion assumptions. These protocol figures are not a live fee quote, and asset prices change.
What happens when a transaction fails or is pending
Solana: state changes roll back, but the fee remains
If a Solana instruction fails, the transaction’s account-state changes are reverted, but the transaction fee is still collected. Atomic execution therefore does not mean a failed transaction is free. Solana’s fee documentation and transaction documentation describe this behavior.

XRPL: use validated results to determine success
An XRPL server response may be provisional. Applications should rely on validated ledger results, not provisional API responses, to determine whether a transaction succeeded. A transaction cost is destroyed when a transaction is included in a validated ledger, including some transactions that fail. See XRPL’s consensus-structure documentation and transaction-cost documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Consensus design and practical risks
XRPL documentation describes a consensus process in which validators propose transaction sets and each server evaluates proposals from its chosen trusted validators, called its Unique Node List (UNL). A ledger becomes validated when a supermajority agrees on its resulting hash. XRPL describes the protocol as trust-based and says the network can stop making progress under certain validator-fault conditions. These are XRPL’s descriptions of its own protocol, not proof that the system is risk-free or a guarantee about decentralization. See Consensus Structure and Consensus Protocol.

XRPL’s documentation states: “Confirming transactions does not require wasteful or competitive use of resources, unlike most other blockchain systems.” That is the protocol documentation’s characterization, not a neutral comparative measurement. The sources here do not provide enough Solana consensus implementation detail to make a like-for-like technical comparison.
- Fees and execution: charges can depend on network load and transaction parameters; a failed transaction may still incur a cost.
- Application and liquidity: program behavior, payment paths, and available liquidity affect what a transaction can do.
- Consensus assumptions: each protocol has its own design assumptions; the available descriptions do not justify declaring one categorically safer.
- Keys and custody: using a compatible wallet or custody provider introduces its own operational considerations. Self-custody means managing private keys and recovery material responsibly.
Market volatility, regulation, exchange access, custody-provider failures, smart-contract vulnerabilities, and counterparty risk are separate considerations from the protocol mechanics above. Network use cases and fees do not establish which asset will perform better financially.
Quick Recap
Choosing between Solana and XRP for a specific use
- Consider Solana’s model when the task depends on general-purpose program execution or combining application instructions in transactions.
- Consider XRPL’s documented capabilities when the task centers on payments, currency conversion through available paths, exchange offers, or token issuance.
- Compare actual transactions, not headline minimums when fees matter: account for signatures and any Solana priority fee, or XRPL load and transaction requirements, and check conditions at the time you transact.
- Check the confirmation state before treating an XRPL submission as successful; use validated results.
- Verify wallet compatibility for the exact asset, device, and wallet application. Ledger lists both SOL and XRP among supported assets, but support varies by model, app, and feature; consult its supported-assets page and the relevant wallet documentation before relying on a particular setup.
