Start with the company’s own definition of its data-center segment, then measure that segment’s share of total revenue across several periods. Next, test whether the revenue is profitable and deliverable: segment earnings, supply capacity, customer buildouts, cash flows, and contractual commitments all matter. A “Data Center” label is not a standardized basket, so headline segment revenue is a starting point—not a complete measure of AI-chip sales or investment quality.
What does the company count as data-center revenue?
Read the latest annual and quarterly filing’s segment note before comparing companies. A segment name can combine products with different roles, demand drivers, and margins; it does not necessarily isolate accelerators or AI sales.
AMD’s segment includes more than accelerators
AMD says its Data Center segment primarily includes AI accelerators, server CPUs, GPUs, APUs, DPUs, AI network interface cards, FPGAs, and adaptive SoCs. Its reported Data Center revenue therefore is not a clean proxy for AI accelerator sales alone. The company’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q provides the segment definition and reported revenue.
Do not assume another issuer’s label means the same thing
NVIDIA describes data-center products for accelerated computing and AI solutions, but its filing does not establish a classification harmonized with AMD’s. When comparing issuers, retain each company’s own segment label and product scope rather than treating the categories as like-for-like.

How large is the exposure, and is it growing?
For each reporting period, record data-center segment revenue, total company revenue, and the segment’s percentage of total revenue. Use consistent periods—quarter against quarter or full year against full year—and review several periods to separate a sustained change from a single-quarter jump. If you compare companies with different fiscal calendars, label the periods rather than implying they coincide.
| AMD reporting period | Data Center revenue | Total revenue | Data Center share of total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q2 2025 | $3.240 billion | Not stated in the cited Q2 2026 Form 10-Q comparison | Not calculable from the stated figures |
| Q2 2026, quarter ended June 27, 2026 | $6.718 billion | $11.536 billion | Approximately 58.2% (writer’s calculation: $6.718 billion divided by $11.536 billion) |
These are AMD-reported quarterly figures, not forecasts. The Q2 2025 comparison and Q2 2026 values are in AMD’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q. The 58.2% ratio is arithmetic based on those reported figures, not a company-published statistic. A rising share shows that the segment is becoming more important to reported sales; by itself, it says nothing about profit quality, customer concentration, or whether shipments can continue.

Does the revenue produce operating income?
Check segment operating income or loss where the company reports it, and distinguish it from consolidated gross margin. Segment operating results describe the segment’s reported operating performance; consolidated gross margin covers the company overall and should not be presented as a segment margin.
AMD’s reported segment result and margin context
AMD reported $2.103 billion of Data Center operating income for Q2 2026, the quarter ended June 27, 2026, in its Form 10-Q. Separately, AMD’s Q2 2026 financial results presentation, dated August 4, 2026, said comparable non-GAAP gross margin increased by more than 200 basis points year over year, driven by higher Data Center revenue mix. That is a company explanation of a consolidated, adjusted measure—not a reported Data Center margin.
Rank #3
The comparison has an important base-period qualification: AMD said Q2 2025 included $800 million of inventory and related charges tied to U.S. government export controls on AMD Instinct MI308 products. Read the company’s explanation and the adjustment basis before interpreting the year-over-year margin change as a normal operating trend.
Can the company deliver what customers want to buy?
Demand for chips is not the same as installed, usable data-center capacity. Review disclosures about manufacturing and packaging availability, product transitions, customer concentration, and customer infrastructure buildouts. A customer may want a product but be unable to deploy it on the expected timetable if power, land, buildings, capital, or construction are constrained.
Rank #4
In its Q2 FY2027 Form 10-Q, NVIDIA said Blackwell accounted for most system shipments, Rubin production shipments began in Q3 FY2027, and the company was experiencing supply constraints. The filing also describes potential delays associated with shortages of infrastructure or capital. NVIDIA stated: “The availability of land, power, shell, and capital is crucial to support the buildout of a full data center inclusive of NVIDIA AI infrastructure by our customers and partners.” This is the company’s risk and operating context, not a guarantee of customer deployment. See NVIDIA’s Q2 FY2027 Form 10-Q.
What commitments, cash flows, and financing risks sit behind sales?
Check inventory, receivables, purchase commitments, long-term supply commitments, customer payment terms, guarantees, and partner financing structures alongside revenue. These can reveal whether growth requires substantial upfront commitments or depends on counterparties’ ability to fund infrastructure. Separate binding disclosed obligations from preliminary arrangements and management expectations, and read the terms rather than treating every agreement as a chip sale.

NVIDIA’s Q2 FY2027 filing discusses AI-cloud agreements, long-term infrastructure leases and guarantees, partner commitments, and increased manufacturing commitments. Such arrangements can affect cash timing, risk, and future revenue; evaluate their disclosed terms and financial effects in the filing rather than assuming they are equivalent to ordinary product shipments. The filing is available at NVIDIA’s SEC filings page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should geographic disclosures be interpreted?
Use the company’s stated method, reporting period, and customer group. NVIDIA’s FY2026 Form 10-K estimated that 76% of Data Center revenue from Taiwan-headquartered customers was attributable to end customers in the United States and Europe. This is a company estimate for that fiscal year and that customer-headquarters group—not a general rule for allocating data-center revenue by geography. NVIDIA said it changed to customer-headquarters-based geography in Q3 FY2026 and recast prior periods. See its FY2026 Form 10-K.
A practical comparison checklist
When comparing semiconductor companies, line up evidence on these axes, while preserving differences in segment definitions:
- Scope: Which products are included, and are accelerators reported separately from CPUs, networking, or other products?
- Revenue mix and trend: What share of company revenue comes from the segment, and how has that changed over several comparable periods?
- Profitability: What segment operating result is disclosed? How are company-level margin measures defined, and are they GAAP or adjusted?
- Concentration and transitions: How dependent is growth on a small set of customers, products, or successful architecture transitions?
- Delivery conditions: What do filings say about supply, manufacturing commitments, customer capacity, power, construction, and deployment timing?
- Financial obligations: What inventory, receivables, guarantees, customer agreements, or partner commitments could affect cash and risk?
- Period and geography: Are the fiscal periods and geographic allocation methods actually comparable?
There is no universal percentage that makes a semiconductor stock “data-center exposed.” The filings establish company-specific categories and results, not a sector-wide benchmark or a valuation recommendation. Revenue exposure is one input to investment analysis; it does not establish expected stock returns.
