How to Check Whether a Citizenship Revocation Order Is Official

Verify a citizenship revocation document by identifying its country, issuer and stage, then checking the official court record or agency service. There is no universal lookup.

There is no single worldwide database for citizenship revocation orders. To check a document, identify the country, issuing authority and document type, then verify it through that authority’s official channel or the relevant court’s records. A notice or request for information may begin a process without being a final revocation order.

Start with the country, issuer and document type

Read the entire document and note the country, agency or court, case number, date, document title and any verification code. Those details determine where a genuine record would be found. Do not use a phone number, email address or link in a message you suspect may be fraudulent; find the court or agency’s official website independently.

Next, determine what the document says it is. A request for information, notice of intent or other process letter can precede a decision. The stages and decision-maker vary by country, so a letter should not be treated as proof of final revocation unless the applicable authority’s process and the document establish that it is final.

How to verify a U.S. federal naturalization-revocation order

For U.S. naturalization revocation under 8 U.S.C. § 1451, the relevant order is issued by a court. The statute says that when a court revokes an order admitting someone to citizenship or cancels a naturalization certificate, it must issue an order cancelling the certificate and send a certified copy to the Attorney General. See 8 U.S.C. § 1451(f). USCIS says it updates its records after receiving the court order; that later agency update is not a substitute for checking the court record. See USCIS guidance on revocation of naturalization. This procedure is specific to U.S. naturalization and should not be generalized to every citizenship status or country.

Find the federal case

  1. If you know the federal district court, search that court’s case records. If you do not know the court, use PACER’s Case Locator, which searches a nationwide index of federal cases.

  2. Search using the case number and the names shown on the document. PACER says its nationwide locator updates daily; court-specific records are available as filings are entered.

  3. Open the docket entry and, if available, the actual order. Compare the court and case caption, case number, parties, filing or entry date, and the order’s text and signature or other authentication. A search-result summary alone does not establish that the paper you received is the complete, current order.

  4. If you cannot locate the case or the record does not resolve a discrepancy, contact the federal court using contact information from its official website. PACER directs users to contact the court when a case cannot be found and for information beyond the summary, docket entries and document copies.

Some court documents, including some immigration records, may not be publicly available. A missing online result therefore does not, by itself, prove that a document is forged. Ask the court how to verify the record or obtain confirmation.

How the process differs in Canada

Canada’s process illustrates why it matters to distinguish a process letter from a final decision. IRCC describes a staged process that can include a request-for-information letter and, if the matter proceeds, a notification letter. The Federal Court is the decision-maker unless the person requests a ministerial determination. The Citizenship Act also requires written notice of the grounds and reasons before revocation. See IRCC’s citizenship revocation process.

Use the contact and response instructions on the official IRCC or court website, reached independently, to confirm what stage a letter represents and how to verify a decision. Do not interpret a request for information or notification letter alone as proof that revocation is complete.

When a verification code is relevant

Some authorities provide a document-specific authenticity check, but a code, QR image or seal is not universally reliable on its own. Use it only on the issuer’s official service and only if the issuer says that service covers the document in question.

For example, Brazil’s Ministry of Justice describes an online authenticity check for certain nationality-loss certificates sent by email. That check uses the verifier number and CRC code shown on the certificate. It applies to the specified certificate type, not to citizenship documents generally. See Brazil Ministry of Justice certificate-authenticity instructions.
