How to Clean Roof Gutters and Prevent Water Damage

Clear debris, inspect gutters and downspouts, and confirm runoff exits away from the foundation. Use a safe access method, or hire a professional when it is not safe to reach.

Clean accessible gutters at least twice a year as a practical baseline, and more often if trees nearby drop leaves, needles or other debris. Clear the gutters and downspouts, inspect their connections and condition, then check that runoff leaves the house rather than collecting beside the foundation. If you cannot reach the system safely, hire a qualified professional instead of risking a fall.

Why clean gutters before water causes damage?

Gutters and downspouts are meant to carry roof runoff away from the building. When debris or a damaged connection interrupts that route, water can overflow near the house. Soil beside the foundation can become saturated, increasing the risk of moisture entering the building.

The PNNL Building America Solution Center reports that a few inches of rain on a house roof can produce several thousand gallons of runoff, attributing the figure to EPA, 2015. That is why the discharge point matters as much as the gutter itself: water needs a clear path away from the building.

How often should you clean gutters?

The City of Portland advises cleaning gutters at least twice a year and more often when trees are present. Use that as a local baseline, not a universal schedule: debris levels vary with nearby trees and conditions at the property. Check more frequently if you notice overflow, visible buildup or drainage problems.

How to clean gutters and check the full drainage route

  1. Choose safe access. Work only where you can maintain stable footing and reach the area without leaning. Inspect the ladder, set it on a supportive, level surface, and maintain three points of contact while climbing. Never rest a ladder against a gutter or overreach sideways. EPA’s building-maintenance guidance states: “Do not rest ladders against gutters.” If the access is unsafe, leave the work to a professional.
  2. Remove debris from accessible gutter sections. Clear accumulated leaves and other debris by hand or with a gutter scoop. A scoop is an optional task tool, not a product tested or endorsed by the cited guidance. Do not compromise your footing to reach a section.
  3. Inspect the gutters as you clear them. Look for loose or missing fasteners, loose joints, corrosion, damage, failed sealant, sagging or low spots, and leaks. Debris removal will not fix a loose connection or a section that no longer drains properly; repairs may be needed.
  4. Check outlets, elbows and downspouts. Look for blockage and make sure connections are secure along the route. For a suspected blockage in an interior downspout, EPA advises using a snake or mechanical auger rather than flushing it with water.
  5. Check where the water exits. Make sure the discharge does not collect beside the foundation. Portland’s guidance for disconnected surface downspouts gives example minimum distances of 2 feet from crawl spaces, porch steps, garages or walkways, and 6 feet from a basement, retaining wall or oil tank. These are Portland examples, not universal code requirements; local rules and site conditions may differ.
  6. Watch what happens during rain. Overflow, ponding, water staining or signs of moisture indoors can indicate that drainage is not working as intended. Persistent intrusion or damaged roofing and drainage components may require a qualified contractor.

Do it yourself or hire a professional?

Consideration DIY may be reasonable Hire professional help when
Access The work is reachable from stable access without leaning or unsafe roof work. The ladder is unstable, the roof is high or steep, or you cannot reach the area safely.
Condition The task is limited to clearing accessible debris and checking for visible problems. Gutters, joints, fasteners or roofing appear damaged and need repair beyond routine clearing.
Blockage and discharge You can check the outlets, downspout route and discharge point safely. A blockage is difficult to reach, or you cannot verify the full drainage route and where water exits.

The cited sources do not establish that every homeowner can safely do roof work. Treat uncertainty about access or repairs as a reason to get qualified help.
