What were the reported purse estimates?
CBS News reported that Paul was set to earn about $40 million, citing DraftKings Network and other sources; it also noted that Paul had mentioned his figure at an August news conference. Tyson’s reported estimate was about $20 million. CBS said promoters had not revealed Tyson’s exact earnings, and the reporting available here does not establish either figure as an official final purse. CBS News, updated November 18, 2024.
So the accurate shorthand is “reported estimates of about $40 million for Paul and $20 million for Tyson,” not that either boxer’s purse was officially confirmed. The reviewed reporting does not include a promoter disclosure or an official purse filing confirming the final amounts.
What does the $18.1 million figure mean?
The widely reported $18.1 million was the event gate: ticket revenue attributed to Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), not the purse of either fighter. The Associated Press reported the gate after the bout, while Netflix separately called it the biggest boxing gate outside Las Vegas in U.S. history and said it had surpassed $18 million.
