If you see a Cash App transfer you did not authorize, report it to Cash App immediately through the transaction’s in-app reporting option or the support route for that product. If someone used your account without permission, say so plainly; if you personally sent money to a scammer, report that as a scam instead. Cash App’s US Terms of Service set conditional reporting deadlines and investigation procedures, but do not guarantee reimbursement.

How do I report a Cash App payment I didn’t make?

  1. Open the transaction in Cash App. Go to your activity feed and select the payment. Tap Report an issue if that option appears. Cash App says some products, including Cash App Card and peer-to-peer payments, support an in-app dispute process; for other products, use the in-app chat function. Follow the current support flow if the labels differ. Cash App’s US Terms of Service describe these routes.
  2. Explain that you did not authorize it. Include the amount, approximate date, and why you believe the transfer was an error. Cash App says it needs this basic information to investigate.
  3. Secure your account if access or credentials may be compromised. Change your password and review account activity. Cash App also advises changing your password if you entered credentials on a fake site or shared them. Do not give a support contact your password, PIN, or full debit card number.
  4. Keep a record. Note the transaction details and the date you first contacted Cash App. Save any relevant messages or other information about the activity.
  5. Contact your bank or card issuer separately if its account may be involved. A dispute with a linked bank, card issuer, or merchant does not itself notify Cash App that you are reporting an error; use Cash App’s reporting channel as well.

The US Terms list 1-800-969-1940 as the only phone number for Cash App support. They also list written correspondence to Block, Inc., Attn: Cash Disputes, 1955 Broadway, Suite 600, MSC 211, Oakland, CA 94612. Use Cash App’s current in-app support entry point if the interface changes. Cash App says its representatives will not ask for your password, PIN, or full debit card number.

Was the transfer unauthorized, or did you send money to a scammer?

The distinction matters because the agreement treats a transfer made without your permission differently from a payment you personally authorized. Do not describe a payment you initiated as unauthorized solely because the recipient deceived you; report the scam accurately and ask Cash App what options apply.

Situation What happened How to report it What to expect
Transfer you did not authorize Someone logged into your account and made an electronic funds transfer without your permission. Report the transaction promptly through its in-app dispute route, if available, or in-app chat. Explain that you did not authorize it. The Terms describe liability protections and investigation procedures subject to deadlines and conditions; they do not promise that a claim will be accepted or funds returned.
Payment you sent to a scammer or wrong recipient You personally approved and sent the payment, but were deceived or entered the wrong recipient. Report it as a scam or mistaken payment through Cash App’s available support route. Cash App’s scam guidance explains how to report scams. Cash App says a peer-to-peer payment you authorized and sent to a scammer is harder to recover; reimbursement is not guaranteed. The Terms also say entering the wrong recipient is not an unauthorized transaction.

Cash App’s Terms say that giving another person account access generally means their use is not an unauthorized transaction under the agreement unless you have told Cash App that the person’s transfers are no longer authorized. If that applies, contact Cash App promptly and explain when permission ended.

Cash App suggests reporting scams to the Federal Trade Commission and, where appropriate, local law enforcement. Those reports serve a different purpose from a Cash App dispute and do not themselves notify Cash App of an error.

What deadlines does Cash App set for unauthorized transactions?

Cash App’s US Terms say to report an unauthorized transaction at once. The agreement’s liability provisions are conditional, not a blanket promise of reimbursement:

  • If you tell Cash App within 2 Business Days after learning of an unauthorized transaction, the Terms say your potential liability is limited to $50.
  • If you wait longer than 2 Business Days, and Cash App can prove that timely notice would have stopped the transaction, the Terms say your liability could be as much as $500.
  • If the first account statement showing the unauthorized transfer has been sent, the Terms say you must notify Cash App within 60 days of that statement to preserve the described protection against losses occurring after that period, if Cash App can prove timely notice could have stopped the loss. The agreement says a reasonable extension may apply for a good reason, such as a long trip or hospital stay.

The Terms define Business Days as days other than Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays. Cash App Business Account terms may have different liability treatment. These periods describe conditions in Cash App’s US customer agreement; they should not be read as unconditional deadlines after which every claim is automatically denied or as a guarantee that a reported loss will be repaid.

How long can Cash App take to investigate?

For covered electronic-funds-transfer errors, Cash App’s US Terms say it generally determines whether an error occurred within 10 Business Days. The agreement allows more time in specified cases:

  • Cash App may take up to 45 days in specified circumstances.
  • Investigations involving new accounts or point-of-sale transactions may take up to 90 days.
  • When an investigation takes longer, the Terms describe conditions for provisional credit. Cash App says it will provide results within three business days after the investigation ends.

These are procedures in the service agreement, not a promise that a particular claim will qualify for provisional credit, be accepted, or finish on a specific schedule.

What if Cash App does not resolve the dispute?

Keep your notes and continue using Cash App’s official support channel to ask about the status and any additional information it needs. If a linked bank account or card may have been affected, pursue that provider’s separate dispute process too; that contact does not replace notice to Cash App. For suspected scams, FTC or local law-enforcement reporting is separate from both disputes.

Cash App’s consumer guidance emphasizes prompt reporting: “The sooner you report the transaction, the better the chance of recovering funds or preventing further unauthorized activity.”
