To secure HNT, protect the wallet’s recovery phrase first: write it down in its exact order, verify the words, and keep the backup private and offline. A PIN protects access to the Helium Wallet app on your device, but it cannot replace a recovery backup. A seed phrase or private key gives control of the wallet, so never share it or enter it on an untrusted site or app.
Why your recovery phrase is the most important security measure
Your recovery phrase can restore the wallet’s private key and access to its tokens, NFTs, and associated Hotspots. Anyone who obtains the phrase or private key can control the account. Helium says it does not need your key to provide support, diagnose a Hotspot, verify an on-chain transaction, or handle an airdrop or redemption.
Helium’s security guidance puts the risk plainly: “Never give seed phrase words to anyone who cannot be trusted with full control of your Hotspots and token balances.” Treat unsolicited support messages, airdrop pages, and redemption offers that request your phrase or key as attempts to obtain wallet control.
New Helium Wallet app accounts use 24 words. Older accounts created with the Helium Hotspot app may use 12 words, and the Helium Wallet app accepts both. Record every word in its precise order and check the spelling. Helium Documentation publishes estimates of 128 bits of entropy for 12 words (about 3.4 × 1038 possible combinations) and 256 bits for 24 words (about 1.16 × 1077); these are published estimates, not independently verified security outcomes. See Helium’s Wallet Seed Phrase guidance.

Make a reliable backup without exposing it
Write the phrase down and store it somewhere private and physically secure. Helium says a lost, forgotten, or misplaced phrase cannot be recovered, and discourages saving it to cloud storage such as Google Drive or Dropbox. An offline paper copy is one option; some crypto users engrave a backup on a durable material such as titanium. No medium makes the phrase safe to disclose: anyone who can read it may be able to take control of the wallet.
- Keep the backup away from people who do not need access to it.
- Do not photograph it, email it, or put it in a cloud-synced note or file.
- Do not send it to someone claiming they can recover a lost wallet; Helium says such offers should be ignored.
- Before removing or logging out of an account, confirm that you have its original recovery phrase. Helium’s app instructions say the phrase is needed to restore the account.
Where to find the phrase and how to handle it safely
The Helium Wallet app can reveal an account’s recovery phrase or private key in its settings while you are logged in. Revealing either is a sensitive action: only do it when necessary, in a private place, and with no screen-sharing, recording, or unfamiliar people nearby. Copying a private key into another wallet gives that wallet access to the account.

Do not enter the phrase or key into a website, form, or app just because it claims to offer support, a free token, or a recovery service. Helium says the key is not needed to diagnose a Hotspot or verify transactions. When an import is genuinely required, use the current instructions from the wallet provider and understand that exposing the key transfers control risk with it.
Use the Helium Wallet app’s PIN controls for device access
The app’s PIN settings can help prevent someone with access to your device from opening or using the wallet. In the app, open an account’s settings and look for the security controls; Helium’s documentation lists these options:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRank #3
- Enable PIN and Reset PIN.
- Require PIN, with intervals of immediately, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 1 hour, or 4 hours.
- Require PIN for Payments.
Imported accounts have separate settings, so check the account you intend to protect. A PIN is an app-access safeguard, not a backup: if the app is removed, the device is lost, or you need to restore the account, the recovery phrase remains essential. See Helium’s Wallet Settings instructions for the current interface.
Can you use a hardware wallet with HNT?
Helium documents Ledger support for HNT, MOBILE, and IOT as Solana SPL tokens through Ledger’s Solana app. Supported actions include viewing addresses and balances, transfers, and signing transactions. Helium says these tokens are not directly supported in Ledger Live.
Rank #4
A hardware-wallet setup changes where signing happens, but it does not make disclosure of its recovery phrase safe. Securely store the hardware wallet’s recovery phrase as carefully as any wallet backup. Helium’s setup instructions discuss blind signing; it is a technical setup step with transaction-review implications, so follow current official instructions for the device and understand what you are approving before enabling or using it.
Ledger alone does not support Helium Hotspot onboarding or location assertions; Helium says those actions must be handled in the Helium Wallet app. The documented setup is therefore not a complete replacement for the app if you manage Hotspots. Consult Helium’s Ledger instructions for supported actions and setup details.

Why importing your phrase into another Solana wallet may show no HNT
Helium migrated to Solana on April 18, 2023. HNT is a Solana token, but importing a Helium Wallet recovery phrase into another Solana wallet may derive a different account because Helium Wallet uses a different derivation path. The result can be an apparently empty wallet even though the HNT remains associated with the original account.
Helium’s documented third-party import method uses the account’s private key rather than simply importing the phrase. That is a high-risk step: entering or copying the private key into another application exposes full account control. Do not repeatedly enter your secret words into wallet apps in an attempt to make the balance appear. Follow Helium’s current instructions for using Solana-compatible wallets, and keep in mind that some Hotspot actions may not be available in third-party apps.
What you can safely share: address versus secret
You can share your public wallet address to receive tokens. It does not let another person determine the private key, but anyone with the address can view its token balances, Hotspots, and associated on-chain history. Share it only if you are comfortable making that activity visible. Never confuse the public address with the recovery phrase or private key, which must remain secret.
Keep SOL available for some transactions
Some complex Solana actions require SOL to cover transaction fees or account rent. If a transaction needs to create new token accounts, it can fail when the wallet does not have enough SOL. This is an operational requirement, not a security setting; Helium explains the fee and rent behavior in its SOL token guidance.
