The Hermès Story: How the Dumas Family Built a Global Luxury Business—and Great Wealth

The Dumas family’s reported fortune is tied to its influence in Hermès, the French luxury house founded in 1837. Hermès says it remains family-owned across six generations; a 2025 ranking reported that the broader Hermès family held 66.7% of the company and estimated its fortune at €163.4 billion. That figure is a dated, market-value-based estimate—not a current audited statement of the family’s personal wealth.

From a family craft house to an international business

Hermès dates its beginnings to 1837 and describes itself as an independent, family-owned French house with six generations of continuity. Its account of that history emphasizes the preservation and transmission of know-how, alongside the expansion of the business into multiple métiers. The broad outline is clear: a family enterprise developed into a diversified international luxury company while the family retained a significant ownership role. The available corporate account does not provide a detailed biography of every generation, so it would be misleading to assign particular growth milestones to individual ancestors without stronger evidence.

The business now spans sixteen métiers. Hermès lists leather goods and equestrian products, silk, apparel, watches, fragrance, beauty, home goods and tableware among them. That range matters to the family-wealth story because Hermès is not a single-product workshop: it is a large company with multiple product categories and a substantial production network.

Axel Dumas connects the family lineage to the modern company

Axel Dumas is a sixth-generation family member and the clearest link between the founding lineage and Hermès’ current leadership. The company says he has led its international and multi-local development since 2013. Its 2025 registration document identifies him as a direct descendant of Émile-Maurice Hermès.

Dumas joined the group in 2003 and held sales and métier leadership roles before becoming Managing Director of Operations in 2011. He was appointed Executive Chairman effective 5 June 2013. His path through operational and commercial roles gives context to his leadership, but it does not mean that he alone owns Hermès or accounts for the family’s reported fortune.

How Hermès’ ownership relates to the family fortune

The 2025 Challenges ranking, as reported by Le Monde, estimated the Hermès family’s fortune at €163.4 billion and put the family’s shareholding at 66.7%. Those figures refer to the broader Hermès family, not exclusively to the Dumas branch. Hermès’ 2025 registration document lists numerous descendants of Émile-Maurice Hermès among company officers and governance bodies, consistent with a wider family network.

The €163.4 billion figure is a ranking estimate calculated using stock-market values, as described in Le Monde’s account. It should be read as an estimate for 2025, not as cash held by family members, a verified balance sheet of their personal assets, or a definitive figure for 2026. Share prices can change, and a family’s stake in a public company is not the same as liquid wealth available to spend.

Figure What it measures Qualification
€163.4 billion Estimated fortune of the Hermès family 2025 Challenges ranking, reported by Le Monde; based on stock-market values
66.7% Reported Hermès family shareholding Figure reported alongside the 2025 Challenges ranking in Le Monde; it describes the broader family
€15.2 billion Hermès company revenue 2024 revenue, reported by Le Monde in its coverage of the 2025 ranking; sales are not family income or wealth

For context, the same 2025 ranking coverage put Bernard Arnault and his family’s estimated fortune at €116.7 billion, also using stock-market values. The comparison is meaningful only as a comparison of estimates from the same ranking and year; it does not make family wealth directly comparable to annual company revenue or to an individual’s liquid assets.

What Hermès’ production model contributes to the story

Hermès describes its business as an integrated creative and artisanal house. Its production information reports 63 production and training sites in France and 16 production sites overseas. The company also reports that 55% of its manufacturing takes place in exclusive in-house workshops, 75% of its objects are made in France, and all leather goods are made in France.

Company-reported measure Reported figure How to read it
Manufacturing in exclusive in-house workshops 55% Hermès’ reported share of manufacturing
Objects made in France 75% Hermès’ reported share of its objects
Leather goods made in France 100% Hermès says all its leather goods are made in France
Production and training sites in France 63 Count reported by Hermès
Production sites overseas 16 Count reported by Hermès

These figures help describe how the company organizes production and positions its products. They do not, by themselves, prove that craftsmanship caused the family’s fortune. The scale of the business, its brand, its range of métiers, its revenue and the family’s shareholding all belong in the explanation; no single operating fact is a complete account of a multibillion-euro estimate.

The 2010 LVMH episode and the defense of family ownership

A major ownership turning point came in 2010, when LVMH built a stake in Hermès. According to Le Monde, the family organized a response, and Bertrand Puech created the holding company H51 to help secure the share capital. The episode helps explain why protecting long-term family ownership became a strategic priority.

LVMH said in November 2014 that it had sold almost all its Hermès shares after the companies reached an agreement, as reported by Le Monde. This was a corporate dispute that reached a stated resolution; it should not be conflated with the separate later dispute involving Nicolas Puech.

The separate Nicolas Puech share dispute

In a 2025 investigation, Le Monde reported that Nicolas Puech claimed his 5.7% stake in Hermès had gone missing and accused his former wealth manager. The manager denied the accusation. These are disputed claims, not proof that theft occurred.

Le Monde also reported that a Geneva court rejected Puech’s fraud accusation in July 2024. According to the report, the court found that he had voluntarily entrusted management of his fortune for years and that there was no evidence proving he had been duped. This case is distinct from the LVMH stake-building episode and should be described with the court outcome and the parties’ positions kept separate.

What the family-wealth figure does—and does not—tell you

The reported fortune is best understood as a ranking’s estimate of wealth associated with the family’s ownership stake, calculated from market values at a particular time. It is not Hermès’ annual sales, the company’s cash balance, or an estimate of what family members could immediately withdraw without affecting the value of their holdings.

When comparing family fortunes, use the same year and methodology, distinguish ownership percentages from estimated wealth, and keep company revenue in its own category. The €15.2 billion revenue figure is for Hermès in 2024; the €163.4 billion family-fortune estimate belongs to the 2025 Challenges ranking as reported by Le Monde. Neither should be presented as a current, exact measure of what the family owns today.
