Rivian’s R2 is a five-seat electric SUV with a displayed range of 275 miles for Standard and 330 miles for Premium and Performance, but those figures are preliminary Rivian estimates—not official EPA ratings or a promise of everyday range. As of October 4, 2026, Rivian lists Performance as available now, Premium for late 2026 and Standard for 2027. The key buying questions are whether your preferred trim will arrive when you need it, how its range fits your regular routes, and whether charging is practical where you live and travel.

Rivian R2 trims, prices and displayed range

Rivian’s live R2 product page lists three trims. Its prices and availability are subject to change, and taxes and fees may vary. The range figures are preliminary estimates based on the EPA test cycle; Rivian says they are not official EPA values.

Configuration Displayed price and timing Displayed range What matters
Standard $44,990; listed for 2027 275 miles Single-motor rear-wheel drive. The page also lists optional rear-wheel-drive Long Range and dual-motor all-wheel-drive Long Range configurations; do not assume the 275-mile base figure applies to those options.
Premium $53,990; listed for late 2026 330 miles Dual-motor all-wheel drive, Premium interior and audio, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and rear drop glass.
Performance $57,990; listed as available now 330 miles Dual-motor all-wheel drive; Rivian lists 656 horsepower, semi-active suspension, and performance-oriented equipment.
Standard Long Range Rivian’s Q1 2026 earnings presentation said it was expected in the first half of 2027; a price is not stated in that presentation. Up to 345 miles, Rivian-estimated Rear-wheel-drive configuration described in the presentation. This is distinct from the live page’s 275-mile Standard listing.

See Rivian’s current R2 page for displayed trims, prices, and equipment, and its Q1 2026 earnings presentation filed with the SEC for the Standard Long Range announcement. Confirm the selected configuration and delivery timing in Rivian’s current configurator before making a purchase decision.

How to interpret R2 range estimates

A displayed estimate is a comparison point, not a guarantee of how far the SUV will go on your roads. Rivian says its figures are preliminary and based on the EPA test cycle. Practical range can change with tires, drive mode, HVAC use, accessories, weather, and driving conditions. Final EPA-certified ratings for all configurations are not established in the cited information.

There is one useful independent data point: in an Edmunds EV Range Test, an R2 Performance covered 304 miles against the 330-mile estimate cited by Edmunds. The result was reported in an Associated Press-republished comparison on September 23, 2026. It describes one vehicle under one test methodology; it does not predict the range of every trim or an individual owner’s daily driving. Read the AP-republished comparison for that test context.

For your own use, compare the range of the exact configuration you would buy with your routine distances and the places you can charge. Long or cold-weather trips, higher speeds, and use of cabin heating or cooling can make a charge stop relevant sooner than the headline estimate suggests. Do not treat the Standard, Long Range, Premium, and Performance figures as interchangeable.

Charging access and stop times

Where you can charge

Rivian says every R2 has a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port and advertises access to more than 21,000 Tesla Superchargers across the United States and Canada, as well as Rivian’s Adventure Network and other compatible chargers. The company also describes the center display as estimating when and where to charge and how long to charge, using the active drive mode and other inputs. Access, compatibility, and station suitability can vary, so check live availability and the specific stations along routes you regularly drive. Rivian’s R2 charging information has its current network and charging details.

Rivian’s fast-charging claims

Rivian advertises adding 150 miles in 15 minutes and charging from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes with a DC fast charger. These are manufacturer claims for optimal conditions, not guaranteed stop durations. Rivian says charging speed depends on battery capacity and state of charge, temperature, charger capacity, weather, and site conditions. A particular charging stop may take longer.

Charging at home and cost

Rivian discusses home charging and its Wall Charger. Whether a home Level 2 charger is feasible depends on the home’s electrical setup; the cost of charging depends on local electricity rates. Public charging prices are set by each network, and Rivian directs drivers to the charger screen for the price at a particular location. The available information does not establish a universal R2 charging cost or endorse a specific third-party home charger.

Space, equipment and towing

Rivian describes the R2 as a two-row, five-seat midsize SUV. Its product page lists 90.1 cubic feet of total storage, including a 28.7-cubic-foot rear cargo area and 79.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Premium and Performance include a rear drop glass. The page also lists Dynamic Adventure Lighting and Adaptive High Beams on those trims, with wheels, audio, interior details, and optional equipment varying by configuration. Rivian cautions that displayed features and options may change before final production. Review the R2 features page and the configuration you plan to order.

Rivian lists a 4,400-pound towing capacity when the Tow Package is fitted to certain configurations; its Standard listing gives 3,500 pounds. Those are not universal figures for every R2. Confirm the selected trim, package, and hitch conditions before relying on a maximum capacity. A Tow Package and compact spare are listed as optional equipment.

Driver assistance is not autonomous driving

Rivian says driver-assistance features support the driver and do not replace judgment, attention, or control. Its stated caveat also says Universal Hands-Free will not stop or slow for traffic lights or stop signs. Treat assistance features as aids that still require an attentive driver, not as autonomous operation.

How to compare the R2 with another electric SUV

Compare vehicles in the configurations you would actually buy rather than relying on a model name or a single headline figure. The Edmunds/AP comparison said the Tesla Model Y charged slightly quicker in Edmunds’ testing, while the R2 offered more total cargo capacity and a higher maximum towing figure among the versions compared. Those are observations from that specific comparison, not universal rankings; its overall conclusion was a tie.

  • Configuration and timing: Compare drivetrain, price after options and fees, and the delivery window for the trim you want.
  • Range: Check certified ratings when available, independent test methods, tires and equipment, weather, speed, and your regular trip profile.
  • Charging: Check connector compatibility and live station availability on your actual routes, likely stop times, home-charging feasibility, and local electricity and public charging prices.
  • Utility: Compare seating, cargo with the seats up and folded, towing configuration, ground clearance, and the uses you have in mind.
  • Comfort and technology: Consider ride quality, cabin layout, driver display, software features, and the limits of driver assistance.

The comparison’s findings and test context are in the AP-republished Edmunds comparison.
