There is no one-size-fits-all winner: the Tesla Model Y has the edge in reported range, ride comfort, and starting price, while the Rivian R2 offers more reported cargo capacity and higher maximum towing when properly equipped. Both can use Tesla Superchargers. Which is the better value depends on the trim you can buy, its delivery timing, and how you use an SUV.
The figures below are for the United States unless noted. They combine Rivian’s current product-page details with an Edmunds comparison published by the Associated Press on September 23, 2026. Prices and availability can change, so confirm the current configurators before ordering.

These are not all like-for-like trim comparisons: range, price, and equipment depend on configuration. The price comparison below also separates Rivian’s current listed prices from Edmunds’ destination-inclusive figures.
Which has more range?
The Model Y has the higher reported range at the top of its lineup and in the comparison’s real-world tests, but a specific R2 trim can change the matchup. Compare the same drivetrain and trim position, and distinguish official estimates from test results.
#1 Best Overall
Rivian R2 range by trim
Rivian currently estimates 275 miles for R2 Standard and 330 miles for Premium and Performance. The Edmunds comparison specifies 345 miles for Standard Long Range. Edmunds’ R2 Performance test covered 304 miles against its 330-mile estimate; that is one test result, not a promise for every driver.
Tesla Model Y range
The Edmunds comparison reports a 294-mile low end for the all-wheel-drive base Model Y and 357 miles for the rear-wheel-drive Premium. Its tested rear-wheel-drive base Model Y covered 337 miles. It reports 358 miles for the three-row Model Y L. These figures reflect the configurations and testing reported in that comparison, not every vehicle or driving condition.
All-wheel-drive versions are rated lower than rear-wheel-drive versions for both vehicles in the comparison. For a purchase decision, compare the exact configuration’s estimate with your typical trip length, and treat an independent test as a separate data point rather than a replacement for the estimate.

How big is the R2, and which has more usable space?
Rivian lists the R2 at 185.9 inches long, 84.7 inches wide with mirrors, 78.1 inches wide with mirrors folded, 66.9 inches high, and a 115.6-inch wheelbase. The cited comparison does not provide a complete, matched set of Model Y exterior dimensions, so it does not establish which vehicle has the smaller overall footprint. Check both vehicles’ current specifications and, if parking clearance is tight, measure the space including mirrors.
For cargo, Edmunds reports 90.1 cubic feet of total storage in the R2 versus 75.5 cubic feet in the five-seat Model Y. Rivian lists 79.4 cubic feet behind the R2’s front row with the seats folded. Edmunds describes passenger space as similar, with somewhat more rear headroom in the R2.
Model Y Premium and Model Y L offer a third row. It can be useful for occasional extra passengers, but raising it reduces cargo room; Edmunds describes the seats as most suitable for children and small adults. If you regularly carry a full load of passengers, compare the seating layout in person rather than deciding from cargo totals alone.
Rank #3
Towing and rough-road use
Rivian lists up to 4,400 pounds of towing for an R2 equipped with the Tow Package; the comparison gives the Model Y a 3,500-pound maximum. These are configuration-dependent manufacturer or comparison figures: confirm the specific vehicle’s equipment and towing requirements before relying on either rating.
Edmunds characterizes the R2 as more capable off-road and more premium-feeling. Those are reviewer assessments, not a substitute for checking the vehicle’s actual equipment against the trails or road conditions you plan to tackle.
Can the Rivian R2 use Tesla Superchargers?
Yes. Rivian says every R2 has a NACS charge port and can access more than 21,000 Tesla Superchargers across the US and Canada. The Edmunds comparison also says both vehicles can use the Supercharger network. Network access does not mean every stop will deliver the same charging speed; the charger, vehicle configuration, battery state and conditions matter.
Rank #4
What the charging-speed figures mean
Rivian advertises that an R2 can add up to 150 miles in 15 minutes and charge from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes on a DC fast charger. Tesla advertises up to 162 miles in 15 minutes for Model Y, as reported by Edmunds; that comparison found Tesla slightly quicker in its testing.
Tesla’s official Model Y page says its “range added in 15 minutes” estimate is based on constant-speed highway data at 65 mph. Tesla also cautions that actual performance varies with the charger, configuration, state of charge, battery temperature, speed, weather and elevation. Treat both brands’ headline figures as conditional claims, not guaranteed stop times or a direct comparison of charging curves.

Rivian’s current R2 page lists prices without an explicit destination-charge statement in the cited page details. Edmunds’ comparison, by contrast, gives destination-inclusive starting prices. Keep those price bases separate rather than treating the difference as a clean sticker-price comparison.

In the Edmunds comparison, the base Model Y costs less than the R2 Standard on a destination-inclusive basis, and the available R2 Performance costs more than the base Model Y. Rivian’s lower-priced trims have later stated availability than Performance, so an advertised entry price does not necessarily mean that trim is available to order now. Verify the current delivery estimate, destination fee, and options in each configurator before comparing your out-the-door cost.

Choose the Model Y if range, comfort, or a third row matters most
Edmunds describes the Model Y as riding more smoothly over bumps and says its available third row is useful for occasional extra passengers. Its comparison also reports higher range at the top of the lineup and a lower destination-inclusive base price. Check the specific Model Y trim’s range and price rather than applying those advantages to every configuration.
Consider the R2 if cargo capacity, towing, or off-pavement use matters more
The R2 has more reported total storage than the five-seat Model Y, and its cited maximum towing figure is higher when equipped with the Tow Package. Edmunds also rates it more favorably for off-road capability, while finding the R2 interface more responsive and enjoyable in its test. These benefits have to be weighed against the particular trim’s price and availability.
Compare the total cost, not just the advertised starting price
For a personal-finance comparison, line up the exact trims and include destination, required equipment, and any options you would actually buy. Then consider how much of the vehicle’s range and cargo capacity you will use. The available evidence does not establish insurance, financing, maintenance, or resale-cost comparisons, so those should be checked separately for your circumstances.
