Microsoft’s October 2025 Xbox Game Pass price increase triggered visible online anger, cancellation attempts and reports of subscribers stacking membership codes before the change. But those posts do not establish how many subscribers actually left. The figures that sparked the reaction are historical U.S. prices, and Xbox announced a later Ultimate price update in April 2026.
What caused the 2025 reaction?
In October 2025, the U.S. monthly price of Game Pass Ultimate rose from $19.99 to $29.99, a 50% increase, according to Tom’s Guide’s contemporary report. Those are historical U.S. figures, not current prices or prices for every country. The increase also came with a broader overhaul of Game Pass plans and benefits, rather than a price change in isolation.
That context matters to a household budget: a subscription’s value depends on the games and extras a person actually uses, not just the headline monthly price. WIRED’s coverage discussed the plan changes alongside the increase.
What did people do online?
Contemporary coverage and forum posts documented anger, people saying they intended to cancel, and subscribers discussing ways to add membership time before the change. A Reddit thread included comments such as “I just canceled my subscription” and “I’m probably not ever going back.” Those are individual commenters’ statements, not a survey of subscribers. The thread is useful as a snapshot of discussion, not as a measure of overall opinion.

Reports also described subscribers stacking membership codes, reportedly up to a 36-month limit, with Amazon among the retailers mentioned. Yahoo Tech’s report, crediting IGN, described that response at the time. It does not establish today’s stacking limit, eligible products, regional rules or redemption terms; check the current terms before buying a code.
Did the backlash cause mass cancellations?
The available coverage establishes that some people complained, tried to cancel or said they had canceled. It does not provide a reliable, representative cancellation rate. Votes, comments and reports that a support page was temporarily struggling cannot be converted into a count or share of subscribers who left. No representative published cancellation figure was verified in the cited coverage.

That distinction is important when interpreting viral reactions: highly motivated subscribers are more likely to post, while people who keep a subscription may say nothing. Online discussion can show what some customers object to, but it cannot reveal the overall balance of opinion or the financial effect on Microsoft.
What changed after the 2025 price hike?
Xbox announced a separate Game Pass Ultimate price update on April 21, 2026. Because pricing has changed again since the October 2025 move, the earlier $29.99 U.S. figure should not be treated as the current price. Check Xbox Wire’s April 21, 2026 update and your account’s displayed local price and renewal date for the applicable terms.

Xbox later announced a distinct cloud gaming change scheduled to begin in November 2026. Microsoft estimated that 4% of Game Pass subscribers would be affected by that change; the estimate is about cloud gaming, not cancellations or dissatisfaction with the 2025 price increase. Details appear in Xbox Wire’s September 3, 2026 notice.

- Check your local renewal price and date. Review the amount and renewal date shown in your Microsoft account; historical U.S. prices do not determine your regional charge.
- List what you actually use. Count the included games and other plan benefits you use regularly, not every benefit advertised.
- Compare play frequency and alternatives. If you play only occasionally, or the games you care about are available elsewhere, compare the cost and flexibility of a lower tier or individual purchases.
- Choose a reversible option where useful. Compare the account’s current cancellation and downgrade choices with the cost of continuing. If you are unsure, avoid buying membership codes until you have checked the current redemption and stacking rules.
