Aave V3 does not necessarily reject a Chainlink price just because it is old. In the cited Aave V3-origin AaveOracle implementation, each reserve has a configured price source; if that source is missing, or returns a price of zero or less, the oracle uses its fallback. The shown code does not check the answer’s update time. Exact behavior depends on the Aave market, chain, asset, and deployed implementation.
How Aave gets a reserve’s price
Aave’s oracle configuration is market-specific. Authorized administration configures asset sources, and governance selects oracle sources for reserves. The oracle documentation describes a registry for those sources and a fallback oracle. A market’s getAssetPrice(asset) returns the asset price in that market’s base currency; the configured source and fallback can also be queried. Aave oracle documentation
In the cited aave-v3-origin implementation, AaveOracle uses Chainlink aggregators as its first source. It returns the configured base unit for the base-currency asset. For another asset, it calls the registered source’s latestAnswer(). A positive answer is returned; if no source is registered or the answer is non-positive, it queries the fallback oracle. When does Aave use the fallback?
The relevant condition in that implementation is source absence or a returned value at or below zero—not whether the answer is recent. The contract comment says: “If the returned price by a Chainlink aggregator is <= 0, the call is forwarded to a fallback oracle.” That comment concerns a non-positive price; it does not say that an old positive price triggers fallback.

The shown lookup uses latestAnswer(); it does not call latestRoundData() or compare an update timestamp. So, for this implementation, a stale but positive answer is not rejected by the fallback condition. Do not generalize that result to customized deployments or other versions: a market may use a different source, adapter, or additional controls.
What makes a Chainlink feed stale?
Chainlink Data Feeds do not update continuously with every market movement. A feed updates when its configured deviation threshold is crossed or its heartbeat interval is reached. Those thresholds vary by feed and blockchain. Chainlink Data Feeds documentation

Chainlink advises integrators to use updatedAt from latestRoundData() or latestTimestamp to assess whether a price is recent enough for the application. If it is not, the integrator should pause or switch operating mode while investigating. That timestamp-aware freshness policy is distinct from the cited AaveOracle fallback check: fallback data is not automatically fresher or safer simply because it is a fallback.
How this differs from Aave’s PriceOracleSentinel
PriceOracleSentinel addresses a different risk: Layer 2 sequencer downtime and recovery. Aave documents it as a gate for operations, with a grace period after the sequencer or oracle becomes available again so users can address positions before normal operation resumes. Its documented restrictions involve borrowing and liquidations. It is not a per-asset check of Chainlink’s updatedAt. Consult the documentation and deployed market/version before assuming the exact operation rules. Aave oracle documentation

What to verify for a specific Aave market
There is no single Aave-wide feed address, heartbeat, or stale-price policy. To assess a particular position or market, identify the exact chain, market, and asset, then check its deployed configuration:
- Find the market’s deployed oracle and the asset’s configured source through the market’s provider/configuration and source lookup.
- Confirm the source contract type and whether it follows the standard
latestAnswer()path or uses a custom adapter. - For a Chainlink feed, verify its address, decimals, latest
updatedAt, heartbeat, and deviation threshold for that feed on that chain. - Check the configured fallback oracle and its behavior; do not assume its price is newer.
- Check whether a sentinel is configured and confirm the deployed version’s borrowing and liquidation rules.
Aave also documents correlated-asset pricing logic such as CAPO for strongly correlated assets, including wrapped tokens. It is not a universal fallback for every reserve; whether it applies depends on the market’s configuration. Aave oracle documentation
