Natural hydrogen has been detected in France’s Lorraine mining basin, but the evidence does not show a proven 46-million-tonne reserve or support claims that it is worth $92 trillion. That figure came from an early, conditional estimate; exploration is continuing, and commercial production has not started.
What was found in Lorraine?
Researchers Philippe de Donato and Jacques Pironon of GeoRessources, a CNRS and University of Lorraine unit, detected hydrogen while investigating methane in the Lorraine coal basin. CNRS reported an initial hydrogen concentration of 14% in a sample at 1,100 metres. Française de l’Énergie (FDE) also described significant dissolved natural hydrogen in a previously drilled well in its May 2023 announcement about REGALOR, its collaboration with the university and CNRS. CNRS’s account and FDE’s announcement describe an exploration finding, not a certified commercial deposit.
Natural, or “white,” hydrogen is molecular hydrogen formed underground through geological processes rather than manufactured industrially. The researchers’ explanation is that reactions between water and minerals at depth generate hydrogen that can rise through the subsurface. That proposed process does not by itself establish the size, concentration, or mineability of an accumulation across the basin.
Is the 46-million-tonne estimate confirmed?
No. CNRS reported that early simulations suggested concentrations could exceed 90% at a depth of 3,000 metres. On the condition that the figures proved correct, the researchers estimated Lorraine might contain approximately 46 million tonnes of natural hydrogen. CNRS explicitly said the conjecture needed confirmation and described further measurements intended to test how far hydrogen extended across the area. The CNRS report presents the number as conditional, not as a certified reserve.

A 2023 question in the French Parliament also referred to the figure conditionally and asked about confirming the volume and possible exploitation. That record shows confirmation was still an open question; it is not an independent reserve assessment. The parliamentary record does not turn the estimate into a proven quantity.
What has changed in the project since the initial estimate?
In an announcement dated June 23, 2026, FDE said it had completed the PTH-2 well to a depth of 3,655 metres and reported exceptionally high natural-hydrogen concentrations. The company said it was targeting resource certification in 2027 and first production in late 2028 or early 2029. These are company-reported exploration results and future targets, not evidence that a certified reserve exists or that production has begun. FDE’s update is the source for the well depth and stated schedule.

Is the deposit worth $92 trillion?
The primary sources cited here do not substantiate a $92 trillion valuation. CNRS’s report gives no dollar value, and FDE’s 2026 update discusses exploration and development targets rather than a valuation. A defensible estimate would need, among other things, a disclosed price basis, a recoverable quantity, extraction and processing costs, timing, and commercial assumptions. The sources do not establish those inputs, so the $92 trillion figure should not be treated as the value of a proven resource.

Detection, resource size, recoverability, commercial production, and economic value are separate claims. The findings described so far establish that hydrogen has been measured and that exploration has advanced; they do not establish a certified recoverable volume or current commercial output. Future project updates would need to clarify:

- Hydrogen concentrations measured at different depths and locations, with sampling methods and results.
- A certified resource volume, and whether it is technically and economically recoverable.
- The proposed extraction and processing methods, alongside environmental and lifecycle impacts.
- Access to infrastructure and demonstrated production economics.
Those details matter because a high concentration in a sample, or a large preliminary estimate, is not the same as a quantity that can be produced profitably at scale.
