Go-to-market (GTM) engineering can use three complementary kinds of tools: CRM-native workflows for lifecycle and pipeline actions, configurable workspaces for sales operations, and cross-app automation platforms for moving data between systems. HubSpot, Airtable, and Make illustrate those roles; they are examples, not a universal stack or a tested ranking. Choose by the process, integrations, complexity, maintainer skills, and subscription access you need.
What jobs can these tools do?
GTM engineering applies systems and automation to the work of marketing, sales, and customer operations. The three tool roles below solve different problems, and a team may use more than one.
- CRM-native workflows: automate actions around leads, campaigns, deals, or support records within a CRM.
- Configurable sales operations: organize account planning, deal coordination, or customer intelligence in a flexible workspace that can complement an existing CRM.
- Cross-app orchestration: connect systems and route or transform information as it moves between them.
Which tools are examples of these roles?
HubSpot: CRM-native workflows
HubSpot documents workflows for marketing, sales, and service. Examples include continuing prospect nurturing after a form submission or marketing-email engagement, assigning leads, creating a sales follow-up task when a deal reaches Closed Won, and notifying support when a ticket is created. These are useful when the trigger and resulting action belong to processes already managed in HubSpot. HubSpot’s workflow documentation describes the available use cases and plan conditions.
Plan access matters: HubSpot says workflows require an eligible Professional or Enterprise subscription in the listed hubs. Automating directly from marketing assets has a separate Marketing Hub Professional or Enterprise requirement. Because entitlements can change, confirm current plan details in HubSpot’s documentation before choosing a workflow around them.

Airtable: configurable sales operations
Airtable presents its no-code platform as a sales CRM and workspace that can extend an existing CRM for account planning, deal coordination, and customer intelligence. Its sales page names integrations including Salesforce, Microsoft Teams, HubSpot, Zoho, Pipedrive, spreadsheets, and more than 100 sales tools, and says data can synchronize bi-directionally. These are Airtable’s product claims, not independent findings about connector quality or suitability for every team. See Airtable’s sales CRM overview.
This role can make sense when teams need a flexible operating layer around their system of record rather than a replacement for it. Airtable also describes no-code integrations as prebuilt services configurable without coding experience, with examples such as Zapier, Tray.io, Workato, and Make in its integration options documentation.

Make: cross-app automation
Make describes a visual-first, no-code automation platform with more than 3,000 prebuilt app connections. Its documentation also covers API integrations for niche or proprietary systems, low-code customization, conditional flow control, data manipulation, and HTTP or webhook requests. Those capabilities are relevant when lead, account, campaign, or internal operations data must move between systems. The connection count and feature descriptions are Make’s own claims, not independent validation of connector reliability or quality. See Make’s product page.
How should you compare tools for your process?
| Decision axis | What to check |
|---|---|
| Native process fit | Does the tool already handle the forms, lifecycle events, lead assignments, pipeline changes, or campaign actions that start or finish the workflow? HubSpot documents examples of these CRM-native tasks. Source |
| Integration coverage | Are the required CRM, marketing, collaboration, and data systems supported? Establish whether each connection is native, provided through a prebuilt third party, or requires custom API work. Make, Airtable sales, and Airtable integrations describe different parts of this landscape. |
| Workflow complexity | Will simple triggers and actions suffice, or does the process require branching, data transformation, webhooks, or custom code? Make describes flow control and API options; HubSpot documents a custom-code extension. Make · HubSpot |
| System-of-record design | Decide whether a flexible workspace should extend the current CRM or whether keeping this process native would be easier to maintain. Airtable explicitly positions its offering as able to extend existing CRM tools. Airtable |
| Skills and entitlements | Identify who will own the workflow, what they can maintain, and whether the needed feature depends on a higher subscription. HubSpot’s workflow and custom-code documentation state specific requirements. Workflow requirements · Custom-code guidance |
Where does no-code end and low-code begin?
A visual builder can cover many routine triggers, actions, and routes. More involved processes may need data manipulation, API or webhook requests, or code. Make describes both visual automation and low-code extension; HubSpot documents a custom-code workflow action using JavaScript or Python for more complex requirements.
Rank #3
That HubSpot custom-code action requires Data Hub Professional or Enterprise, according to its workflow guidance. So a workflow that looks visually approachable may still cross into code skills and a higher-tier entitlement when requirements grow. Define the desired behavior and verify access before committing to a design.

They provide limited context, not a tool-selection answer. G2’s Spring 2025 Mid-Market Grid Report for No-Code Development Platforms is broad category context rather than a GTM-engineering evaluation; its review data were gathered by February 25, 2025. It should not be treated as a current, GTM-specific ranking.
Rank #4
Airtable’s report, “5 insights shaping the future of martech,” says 79% of marketing teams using no-code or low-code tools in its survey reported access to development support to customize their stack. The report’s publication year is not established here, and the figure describes its respondents—not all marketing teams. It suggests that no-code adoption does not necessarily mean teams work without developer support.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
How can you choose a practical starting point?
- Write down the trigger, action, and destination. For example, specify what event begins a follow-up, what should happen, and which system should record it.
- Start with the system that owns the process. If a lead or deal event is already managed in a CRM, check its native workflow options first. If the work is account coordination across teams, consider whether a configurable workspace should sit alongside the CRM.
- Map every handoff. List the applications and fields involved, and verify which connections are available and how data will flow. Distinguish a prebuilt connector from custom API work.
- Test the complexity and maintenance boundary. Identify branches, transformations, webhooks, or code the workflow needs, then confirm a named person or team can maintain them.
- Verify access before rollout. Check current subscription entitlements for the exact workflow features you plan to use; vendor plan conditions are subject to change.
