There is no single best online healthcare administration degree for every student. If you need your first degree, compare bachelor’s programs against the requirements of the jobs you want. If you already have a bachelor’s degree and are aiming for management, compare graduate options such as a Master of Health Administration (MHA). Among current online MHA examples, the University of Illinois Chicago, the University of North Carolina Wilmington and George Mason University differ in cost, pace, admission fit and online experience—not just price or credit count.

Choose the degree level that fits your next step

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says medical and health services managers typically need a bachelor’s degree. Requirements vary by employer and role; some employers prefer a master’s, and relevant administrative or clinical experience is commonly expected. That makes a bachelor’s a reasonable starting point for someone without one, while an MHA or another relevant graduate credential may suit someone with a bachelor’s who wants further preparation for management.

Do not assume every management role requires an MHA, or that a degree alone substitutes for experience. Check job postings from the kinds of employers and settings you are targeting, and compare their education and experience requirements before choosing a credential. The online MHA examples below are graduate programs, not substitutes for an online healthcare administration bachelor’s comparison.

Compare these online MHA programs

These official university examples offer different combinations of price, pace and format. They are not a controlled ranking, and the tuition figures cover different academic years and assumptions.

Program Credits and completion Published cost Delivery and admissions fit
University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), Online MHA
UIC School of Public Health program page
40 credits across 13 courses; completion in as few as 16 months. $980 per credit on the program page, or $39,200 in tuition for 40 credits at that rate, before any additional fees or other costs. Described as 100% online and designed for working professionals with 3 or more years of healthcare-setting experience. The page also mentions an annual in-person networking event. It lists a December 1, 2026 application deadline and January 11, 2027 start.
University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), Online MHA
UNCW program page
48 credits; the page says approximately two years in its overview and “as few as 15 months” in its summary tiles. It lists six starts per year. For 2026–27, estimated full-program tuition and fees are $17,033 for in-state students and $63,865 for out-of-state students. Books and materials are excluded, and future tuition increases are not included. CAHME-accredited. The different completion estimates mean you should ask what enrollment pace and course availability are assumed for your situation.
George Mason University, Online MHA in Health Systems Management
George Mason program page
39 credits; listed completion time is 30 months. For 2025–26, tuition is $895 per credit plus a $35 distance-learning fee per credit. At 39 credits, that equals $34,905 in tuition plus $1,365 in distance-learning fees, or $36,270 before other costs. CAHME-accredited; most courses are asynchronous, but the field-based capstone practicum requires applied work. Healthcare-related undergraduate study or field experience is not required, though it is considered in admission.

UIC: consider it if you have substantial healthcare experience

UIC’s stated experience expectation makes it a particularly relevant option for established healthcare professionals looking to move toward leadership. When you assess the “100% online” description, clarify how the annual in-person networking event fits your location and schedule. Confirm the listed application deadline, start date and current tuition before applying or budgeting.

UNCW: check which completion pace and residency estimate apply

UNCW’s six annual starts may offer more entry points than a program with fewer start dates. Its page’s two different duration descriptions make it important to ask for a course-by-course plan showing a realistic completion timeline. The in-state and out-of-state estimates also make residency classification a major budget question.

George Mason: weigh asynchronous coursework against the practicum

Mostly asynchronous courses may be useful if you need to fit study around work, but they do not mean every program requirement is self-paced. Ask how the field-based capstone is arranged, whether you must secure your own site, and what support is available if you work outside the Washington, D.C., area.

How to decide which program is best for you

Check program accreditation, not just university accreditation

CAHME accreditation is a field-specific signal for graduate healthcare management education and can matter to some employers. The evidence here does not establish it as a universal legal or hiring requirement. Check the status of the specific program in CAHME’s directory before enrolling, and distinguish programmatic accreditation from the institution’s general accreditation.

UIC also reports accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). That is a separate program accreditation signal; compare what each credential means for your own goals rather than treating accreditation names as interchangeable.

Calculate the cost you would actually pay

Do not compare the three published figures as though they were same-year all-in prices. UIC gives a per-credit rate; UNCW provides full-program estimates by residency for 2026–27; George Mason’s listed tuition and distance fee are for 2025–26. Your total can also change with mandatory fees, course load, transfer credits, books and materials, residency status, and annual rate adjustments.

  • Ask each school for an individualized estimate covering the credits you expect to take, mandatory fees and your likely enrollment pace.
  • Confirm whether the quoted tuition rate applies to every term until graduation or may change in later academic years.
  • Ask whether transfer credits can reduce the number of credits billed, and whether your employer offers tuition assistance.
  • Budget for books, materials, travel or in-person activities, and any costs associated with a practicum placement.

Verify the online format and practical requirements

“Online” can describe very different schedules. Ask whether classes are asynchronous, synchronous or mixed; whether live attendance is required; whether there are networking events or other in-person activities; and whether capstone or practicum work must be completed at an organization. Confirm how a placement is approved and supported, particularly if you live far from the university.

Match curriculum and admissions to your career setting

Compare course plans for healthcare finance, policy, operations, quality, population health, health information systems and leadership. The relevant balance depends on whether you are targeting a hospital, public health organization, clinic, insurer or another setting. Also check current admission criteria: UIC expressly targets applicants with at least three years of healthcare-setting experience, while George Mason says healthcare-related undergraduate study or field experience is not required but is considered in admission.

What salary and job-growth figures can—and cannot—tell you

The BLS reports a median annual wage of $123,860 for U.S. medical and health services managers in May 2025, and projects 24% employment growth for the occupation from 2025 to 2035. Those are occupation-wide figures, not starting salaries, placement rates or earnings promised by any of the programs above. Actual outcomes depend on factors such as role, experience, location and employer.

College Transitions’ March 2026 comparison profiles a wider mix of bachelor’s and master’s options, including SNHU, WGU, GW, UNC, UNCW and UCF. It can help identify programs to investigate, but its rankings, costs and program details should be checked against current institution-published information before you rely on them.
