1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo evaluate a drone company, look past its revenue growth percentage. Trace what drove sales, whether the company collected cash, how much reported backlog is funded and deliverable, and whether available liquidity can cover production, development, debt and working-capital needs. These measures answer different questions: growth describes past sales, backlog offers conditional visibility into possible future sales, and cash analysis tests whether the company can finance the gap between them.
Start with the company’s business model and reporting periods
Before comparing figures, establish what the company sells and how it earns revenue. A developer still funding aircraft design and certification has a different spending profile from a distributor selling established products or a manufacturer delivering against government contracts. Revenue growth, gross margin, backlog and cash use mean different things in those models.
Use the same fiscal periods and segment definitions when comparing a company with itself or with peers. Note acquisitions, changes in segment reporting and one-time deliveries. A year-over-year comparison can be misleading if the periods cover different businesses or if one large delivery accounts for much of the change.
What is driving revenue growth—and does it convert to cash?
Separate the growth rate from its causes
Break reported growth into its drivers where the company provides enough detail: units delivered, price changes, product mix, new customers, acquisitions or a large contract milestone. Then check which segments contributed. A growing segment can be obscured by weakness elsewhere, while a consolidated growth rate can make a one-off delivery look like a broad demand trend.

Gross margin adds context. Revenue can rise while margins fall if a company is selling a less profitable mix, absorbing higher production costs or ramping manufacturing. Compare both the direction of revenue and the direction of gross margin across consistent periods, and read the company’s explanation for material changes.
Check the route from reported sales to collections
Revenue recognition does not mean cash has arrived. Review accounts receivable and the cash-flow statement alongside sales. A delivery late in a reporting period may increase recognized revenue while the customer pays in a later period. Contract terms, acceptance milestones and billing schedules can affect when cash follows revenue.
AIRO Group Holdings reported second-quarter 2026 revenue growth of 76% to $43.2 million and a 64% gross margin. The company attributed the growth to stronger drone-segment performance, partly offset by other businesses; it also said revenue recognition in government-serving businesses can vary with contract timing, production schedules and delivery milestones. This company-specific example shows why segment mix, margins and timing belong beside the headline growth figure, rather than being treated as a sector norm.
How to read backlog without treating it as guaranteed revenue
Find out what the company counts
Backlog is a company-defined measure, not a universal accounting category. Check whether it includes signed orders, funded orders, options, expected deliveries or other commitments. Look for a breakdown of funded and unfunded amounts, the expected conversion period, and any exclusions by customer, region or business unit.

Then test how conditional the reported amount is. Customers may have rights to defer, modify or cancel orders; budgets or contract awards may be uncertain; and delivery schedules may shift. Production capacity, component availability, certification, customer acceptance and concentration in a few programs all affect whether an order can turn into revenue on schedule.
Connect backlog to the cash required to fulfill it
Even an order that is ultimately delivered can consume cash before it generates customer payments. Materials, labor and production investment may be due before a company reaches a billing or acceptance milestone. Compare the timing of those outlays with customer deposits, milestone payments and final collections. Backlog is not revenue, and revenue is not cash.
One issuer’s 2025 annual report cautions: “Our backlog may not be indicative of future revenue and may not result in realized revenue.” The same filing says delivery schedules can change and customers may modify, delay or cancel orders. Treat that as a company-specific risk disclosure, not a universal backlog definition or a guarantee that every company’s orders are exposed in the same way.
AIRO reported approximately $163 million of drone backlog as of June 30, 2026, excluding U.S. backlog, and said it expected the majority to convert to revenue over the next twelve months. That was management’s expectation, not a promise: the company also noted that government and defense revenue recognition varies with contract timing and delivery milestones.

How to assess cash needs and financing risk
Build from available liquidity, not a headline balance
Start with cash and short-term investments, then identify amounts that may not be freely available, such as restricted cash. Add financing only after checking its conditions: borrowing-base limits, eligible collateral, covenants, maturity, interest and availability. Also review debt repayments, leases, supplier commitments and customer deposits that might need to be refunded.
For example, XTI Aerospace reported $16.7 million of cash and cash equivalents at December 31, 2025. Its 2025 Form 10-K also described up to $20 million of borrowing under an asset-based revolver entered into in February 2026, subject to eligible receivables and inventory. The facility’s maximum amount is not equivalent to cash on hand; actual borrowing depends on its terms and available borrowing base.
Interpret cash flow, working capital and spending together
Review operating cash flow over several periods and separate recurring business needs from financing proceeds and unusual items. Operating cash used is not the same as net loss: noncash expenses and changes in working capital affect the relationship. Also account for capital expenditure and planned production or development spending, which may sit outside operating cash flow.
Joby Aviation reported $509.9 million of net cash used in operating activities in 2025, compared with $436.3 million in 2024. Its 2025 Form 10-K says future capital needs depend in part on revenue growth, the timing and amount of customer cash receipts, sales and marketing expansion, and development spending. The filing also identifies noncash items in operating cash use, including stock-based compensation, warrant and earnout remeasurement, and depreciation and amortization. The two annual figures show increased operating cash use, but by themselves they do not establish a precise future burn rate or runway.

XTI Aerospace reported $36.6 million of cash used in operating activities and a $68.5 million net loss for 2025. Its Form 10-K also reported approximately $3.1 million of customer deposits at December 31, 2025, including aircraft pre-order deposits that may be refundable or conditional. Deposits can help fund activity, but they should not automatically be treated as permanent financing when refund conditions may apply.
Use scenarios rather than a single runway estimate
A rough starting calculation is available unrestricted cash divided by a representative period of net cash use. It is only a screening measure: it can overstate runway if spending is about to rise or understate it if collections are temporarily delayed. It is especially weak when the company has uneven delivery schedules, sizable working-capital swings, restricted cash or financing that is conditional.
Build at least a base case and a downside case using the company’s own timing and spending disclosures. Vary delivery and collection timing, receivables, inventory purchases, capital expenditure, debt payments and access to financing. Ask what happens if a major delivery moves into the next quarter, a customer pays later, or a borrowing base shrinks. Then identify the production, certification or commercial milestones that would need to occur before cash generation could improve.

| Measure | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue growth | Period, segment, units, pricing, mix, acquisitions and large deliveries | Shows whether growth is broad, repeatable and tied to the company’s underlying business |
| Gross margin | Margin trend by segment where disclosed; management explanation for shifts | Indicates whether the sales mix and production economics support healthier growth |
| Backlog | Definition, funded share, expected conversion, exclusions and customer change or cancellation rights | Distinguishes conditional order visibility from revenue the company can reasonably expect to deliver |
| Concentration | Revenue or backlog dependence on major customers, programs and government budgets | Shows how much results could be affected by one buyer, program or funding decision |
| Cash conversion | Receivables, inventory, customer payment terms, deposits and acceptance milestones | Tests how much cash is tied up between production and collection |
| Funding burden | Operating cash flow, capital expenditure, available cash, debt, financing conditions and dilution risk | Shows whether the company can fund its plan without relying on uncertain future financing |
| Execution requirements | Production capacity, components, certification, delivery acceptance and development milestones | Connects plans and orders to the practical ability to produce, deliver and collect |
Concentration deserves issuer-specific scrutiny. One issuer’s 2025 annual report disclosed four customers at approximately 38%, 20%, 11% and 11% of that issuer’s revenue and warned that program production and customer concentration could affect results and cash flow. Those shares describe that issuer only; they are not benchmarks for drone companies generally.
What to conclude from the numbers
A stronger case for growth quality combines identifiable sales drivers, stable or improving margins, timely collections, and backlog that is clearly defined and realistically deliverable. A more fragile case combines growth concentrated in a few deliveries or customers, weak cash conversion, orders exposed to delays or cancellation, and liquidity that depends on conditional borrowing or new financing.
Keep guidance separate from reported results. XTI Aerospace management’s April 15, 2026 prepared remarks gave 2026 revenue guidance of approximately $160 million or greater and described purchasing cycles weighted toward the second half, with seasonality tending to overweight the fourth quarter. That is management guidance as of that date, not achieved revenue; compare it with actual results as the company reports them.
No single metric settles the question. Judge the company’s reported growth, ability to convert sales into cash, backlog quality and funding plan together, using the latest filing and preserving the period, segment, definition and conditions attached to each figure.
