AMD is trying to become a credible, large-scale alternative to NVIDIA in AI computing—but growth and new partnerships do not yet show that it has caught NVIDIA. The Samsung–Apple comparison is a useful strategic question, not evidence that the same outcome will happen: AI accelerators and smartphones are different markets, and the available sources do not establish a like-for-like history of Samsung’s competition with Apple.

What the Samsung–Apple analogy means—and what it does not

The analogy frames a familiar competitive challenge: can a company with a smaller position persuade customers to adopt its products at scale against an entrenched rival? For AMD, that means offering more than a GPU. Customers evaluating AI systems also consider software, memory, networking, complete-system design, supply, support, and the work required to move existing workloads.

It does not mean AMD has matched NVIDIA, that their market positions are alike to Samsung’s and Apple’s, or that AMD will follow Samsung’s path. The evidence here does not establish Samsung’s historical market share, pricing, or product trajectory against Apple, so those details should not be inferred from the headline. The useful question is narrower: can AMD make its AI platform practical and dependable enough for more customers to choose it?

AMD is growing, but revenue growth is not proof it has caught NVIDIA

AMD’s reported results show substantial growth in its business. In its 2025 Form 10-K, the company reported $34.6 billion in total revenue for 2025, up 34% from 2024, and $16.6 billion in data-center revenue, up 32%. AMD attributed data-center growth primarily to demand for fifth-generation EPYC processors and Instinct MI350-series GPUs.

For the quarter ended June 27, 2026, AMD reported $11.5 billion in revenue, up 50% year over year, including $6.7 billion in data-center revenue, up 107%. Those figures, reported in AMD’s Q2 2026 financial results, indicate that AMD’s data-center business was expanding quickly. They do not, by themselves, show how much AI-accelerator market share AMD gained or whether it overtook NVIDIA.

The distinction matters to investors and customers alike. Revenue can rise because of demand for multiple products, changes in product mix, or sales from a lower starting point. AMD’s data-center category includes both server processors and accelerators; its growth rate is not an AI-GPU market-share measure.

AMD’s strategy is a platform, not just an accelerator

AMD is positioning Instinct accelerators alongside EPYC server CPUs, networking, rack-scale systems, and software. At its November 11, 2025 Financial Analyst Day, the company said MI350 GPUs were deployed at scale by leading cloud providers, including Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. It also described Helios systems with MI450-series GPUs as expected to begin in Q3 2026. These are dated company statements and plans; the materials cited here do not independently confirm whether that schedule was met by October 4, 2026. AMD’s strategy announcement sets out the roadmap.

AMD also gave long-term growth targets at the event: a company revenue compound annual growth rate of greater than 35%, and a data-center revenue CAGR of greater than 60%, over the next three to five years. These are management targets, not achieved results or guarantees. Actual progress depends on customer adoption, product execution, supply, competition, and the broader market.

ROCm is central to whether AMD can be a real AI alternative

ROCm is AMD’s software platform for computing across products including Ryzen, Radeon, and Instinct. For AI customers, the key question is not simply whether ROCm exists, but whether the required frameworks, libraries, tools, and optimizations work well for their specific models and deployment environments. AMD describes ROCm and developer enablement as strategic priorities in its Q2 2026 materials; that corporate positioning is not independent evidence of feature parity or equivalent adoption with NVIDIA’s CUDA ecosystem.

The OECD’s 2025 paper on competition in AI infrastructure identifies NVIDIA’s first-mover advantage, performance, and CUDA software as factors in AMD’s difficulty catching up. It describes AMD as NVIDIA’s most direct rival in GPU chip design. That analysis is time-bounded context, not a current market-share audit. It helps explain why switching costs matter: a company with code, workflows, and staff experience built around one platform may face meaningful engineering work to port and validate its workloads elsewhere.

  • For a new deployment: test whether the intended model and software stack are supported on the target platform, and whether the team can operate it reliably.
  • For an existing NVIDIA deployment: include the cost and time to port code, tune performance, and validate results—not just accelerator purchase prices.
  • For either vendor: assess support, software updates, and compatibility over the system’s expected service life.

AMD’s broader gaming and AI-PC business should also be kept distinct from its data-center push. The company reported $14.6 billion in 2025 Client and Gaming revenue, up 51%, and $3.9 billion in Gaming revenue, also up 51%, primarily driven by higher semi-custom revenue and strong Radeon GPU demand. These results support Radeon’s place in AMD’s consumer strategy; a gaming graphics card is not interchangeable with an Instinct accelerator for data-center AI workloads. AMD discusses its gaming and AI-PC positioning in its November 2025 company blog.

What Samsung is actually doing with AMD

Samsung’s role in this story is more concrete than the Apple comparison. On March 18, 2026, Samsung and AMD announced a memorandum of understanding to expand work on AI memory and computing. According to the announcement, the companies plan to align on primary HBM4 supply for AMD’s next-generation MI455X accelerator and work on advanced DDR5 memory for future sixth-generation EPYC processors, codenamed Venice.

The announcement also says the companies will discuss possible Samsung foundry services for future AMD products. A discussion is not a completed foundry agreement, and the MOU does not establish that the planned memory has already shipped or specify delivered volumes. Samsung and AMD said Samsung HBM4 supports speeds of up to 13 Gbps and maximum bandwidth of 3.3 TB/s; these are vendor-announced specifications, not independent measurements of an installed system.

Memory supply matters because high-performance accelerators need substantial bandwidth, but a component specification alone does not determine the performance of an AI system. The outcome also depends on the accelerator, software, networking, system configuration, availability, and the workload being run.

How to compare AMD and NVIDIA for an actual AI workload

There is no universal winner established by the figures and announcements above. A useful comparison is workload-specific and evaluates the complete system rather than one headline specification.

  1. Match the workload. Compare the same model and task—training or inference—with the same precision, batch size, software versions, and serving conditions. The sources cited here do not provide an independent, workload-matched AMD-versus-NVIDIA benchmark set.
  2. Check software fit. Verify framework, library, and model support on the exact platform. Estimate porting, tuning, validation, and staff-training effort if existing code relies on CUDA.
  3. Compare complete-system capability. Consider accelerator memory and bandwidth, networking, power, and rack design together. AMD’s Helios and MI450 roadmap and the Samsung memory plans are forward-looking context, not proof of delivered system performance.
  4. Check delivery and support. Compare the system that can actually be delivered, when it can be delivered, and what vendor support is available. AMD itself identifies competition, supply, and business cyclicality among the risks in its annual filing.
  5. Use the right evidence for the decision. Treat reported financial results as results, management forecasts as targets, and supplier specifications as vendor claims. Seek current measurements for the workload and configuration that matter to the deployment.

What would show that AMD’s challenge is working?

For customers, practical evidence would include successful deployments on their workloads, reliable software support, available systems, and a total cost and operating experience that make switching or adding a second platform worthwhile. For investors, continued AMD growth can be relevant, but it should be read alongside product execution, customer adoption, and the company’s ability to supply complete systems—not mistaken for proof of AI-accelerator leadership.

AMD is building a serious alternative around accelerators, CPUs, systems, and ROCm, and its recent reported revenue growth gives the effort commercial momentum. Whether that becomes a durable challenge to NVIDIA depends on execution across hardware, software, supply, and customer adoption. The Samsung comparison captures the ambition; it does not establish the outcome.
