How to Calculate Bitcoin Returns, Percentage Gains, and Your Break-Even Price

Calculate Bitcoin profit and percentage return, account for buying and selling fees, and distinguish a current-value estimate from tax gain on a sale.

To calculate Bitcoin profit, subtract your cost from the Bitcoin’s current value or your net sale proceeds. To calculate percentage return, divide that gain or loss by a clearly defined cost and multiply by 100. Include buying and selling costs when estimating break-even: fees can make the price you need to sell at higher than your purchase price.

Calculate dollar profit or loss

For one Bitcoin purchase with no costs, let C be the amount invested and V the comparison value:

  • Dollar gain or loss = V − C
  • Percentage return = ((V − C) ÷ C) × 100

Use current market value for an unrealized estimate, or net sale proceeds for a realized result. State what your cost figure includes: the original purchase amount alone or the amount paid including fees.

Example using a stated cost basis

Suppose you invest $1,000 and the Bitcoin you hold is later worth $1,250. Before costs, the increase is $250, and the return on the original $1,000 investment is 25%: (($1,250 − $1,000) ÷ $1,000) × 100. This is an illustrative calculation, not a Bitcoin market-performance statistic.

Include fees in the calculation

For a purchase of q BTC at price P, followed by a sale at price S, let fb be the proportional buying fee and fs the proportional selling fee. If those fees are percentages of the purchase and sale amounts:

  • Purchase cost including fee = q × P × (1 + fb)
  • Sale proceeds after fee = q × S × (1 − fs)
  • Net profit = sale proceeds after fee − purchase cost including fee
  • Break-even sale price = P × (1 + fb) ÷ (1 − fs)

This break-even formula assumes proportional fees on the specified purchase and sale amounts. It excludes taxes and other costs. Add fixed charges, spread, withdrawal fees, or on-chain transaction fees to the relevant cash flows. The SEC’s Understanding Fees page prompts investors to consider how much an investment must rise to break even; compare total costs on both sides of a transaction rather than looking at a fee rate alone.

Unrealized returns are not tax gains

A comparison between what you paid and what your Bitcoin is worth now estimates an unrealized change in value. Tax gain or loss is a separate calculation that generally applies when you dispose of an asset, and the rules depend on your jurisdiction.

U.S. federal tax context

The IRS says the difference between adjusted basis and amount realized on a digital-asset sale determines gain or loss, reported in U.S. dollars. Amount realized can include cash received and the fair market value of services received to effect a sale, reduced by allocable transaction costs. Purchased virtual currency’s basis includes acquisition fees, commissions, and other acquisition costs. See the IRS digital-asset FAQ and its virtual-currency FAQ.

For digital assets, IRS Publication 550 (2025) identifies the asset type, transaction date and time, units, fair market value in U.S. dollars at the relevant time, and basis as information used to calculate gain or loss. If you bought Bitcoin at different times or sell only part of your holdings, do not assume that one average entry price necessarily determines the tax basis of the units disposed of. Applicable identification rules and your circumstances matter. A calculator can help with arithmetic but does not by itself establish a complete tax result.

Keep records for multiple purchases or partial sales

When a holding consists of multiple purchases, a single average price may help summarize performance but may not answer which units’ basis applies to a particular disposition. Keep records that let you identify what was acquired and disposed of and when.

  • Record the asset and units involved in each transaction.
  • Keep transaction dates and times, along with the fair market value in U.S. dollars where relevant.
  • Track acquisition costs and transaction costs associated with a disposition.
  • Check the applicable tax rules for your jurisdiction and the method used to identify disposed units.

Exchange dashboards may use their own definitions of return. Coinbase, for example, describes a platform-specific investment-performance display in its help article; that methodology should not be treated as a universal exchange convention or tax calculation.
