Why Elon Musk Accused Trump of “Ingratitude” Over His Political Spending

Elon Musk’s accusation came after a dispute over Trump’s bill escalated. The reported 2024 spending figures vary in scope and do not prove Musk’s claim about the election.

Elon Musk accused Donald Trump of “ingratitude” on June 5, 2025, after a dispute over Trump’s tax-and-spending bill escalated into a public social-media fight. Musk said Trump would have lost the election without his help; that was Musk’s political claim, not a proven conclusion. News reports put Musk’s 2024 political spending at more than $250 million or nearly $300 million, depending on what spending they counted.

What prompted Musk’s accusation?

The rupture unfolded over several days, moving from a public farewell to a policy dispute and then personal attacks. The sequence matters: Musk’s “ingratitude” post came after he criticized a bill Trump was promoting.

May 30: a public farewell

Trump praised Musk at an Oval Office event as Musk prepared to leave his government role. Musk said he would continue visiting and remain a friend and adviser to the president. The Associated Press covered the farewell.

June 3: Musk attacks Trump’s bill

Musk called Trump’s tax-and-spending legislation “a disgusting abomination.” When Musk posted, the bill had passed the House and was being debated in the Senate, according to AP. The news agency also reported that the legislation would curtail subsidies that benefit Tesla, giving the dispute a direct policy dimension for Musk’s company. AP’s account of Musk’s criticism and the bill describes that context.

June 5: “Such ingratitude”

Musk posted on X: “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate.” He followed it with: “Such ingratitude.” AP’s compilation of the exchange reports the posts and Trump’s response.

Musk’s election statement is a counterfactual: it describes what he believes would have happened under a different set of circumstances. Political spending figures show the scale of reported support, but they do not establish that Trump would have lost without Musk.

How much did Musk spend on political causes?

Two 2025 reports gave different figures and described the spending differently. They should not be treated as interchangeable totals or as proof that Musk gave either sum directly to Trump personally.

Report Figure for 2024 What the wording covers
Associated Press More than $250 million AP described Musk’s political spending. Source.
Reuters Nearly $300 million Reuters described spending backing Trump’s campaign and other Republicans. Its stated scope is broader than AP’s phrasing. Source.

The reports therefore establish substantial political spending, but not a single exact total on a shared accounting basis. Nor do these figures, by themselves, show how much went to Trump’s campaign as opposed to other political efforts.

How did Trump respond?

Trump said Musk had worn out his welcome and that he had asked Musk to leave. In a Truth Social post, Trump also referred to taking away the EV mandate and said Musk “just went CRAZY!” He framed the dispute in part around electric-vehicle policy changes he said would financially harm Tesla. Those remarks are Trump’s explanation; they do not independently establish why he ended the relationship.

AP’s June 5 account summarizes the exchange, while ABC News’ timeline records additional statements made during the argument, including Musk’s call for Trump’s impeachment and an allegation concerning Epstein-related files. Those were statements in the dispute, not substantiated findings.

What happened after the public rupture?

On June 11, Musk said he regretted some of his posts about Trump from the prior week: “I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week.” AP reported Musk’s statement. That expression of regret is later context, but it does not, on its own, establish that the relationship was repaired. The cited reporting documents the initial rupture and this statement, not the relationship’s status as of October 2026.
