There is no single best way for an AI agent to pay for every purchase. For shopping at a merchant, card-network approaches are designed to connect agent checkout with familiar payment infrastructure. For paying an online service, x402 enables stablecoin payments through an HTTP request. AP2 is a framework that can accommodate different payment methods rather than a payment instrument itself. Which option works—and what protections apply—depends on the provider, merchant, implementation, and jurisdiction.
Which payment method fits the purchase?
Start with what the agent is paying for. An agent buying from a merchant needs a checkout path that the merchant and payment provider support. An agent accessing a paid online resource may instead use a web-native payment flow. The protocols and programs below address different parts of that problem; they are not interchangeable consumer payment products.
| Approach | Purchase context | Payment basis | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Network-backed agent checkout | Shopping at a participating merchant | Card-network infrastructure | Visa describes Trusted Agent Protocol as a way for merchants to distinguish legitimate agents and support agent-driven checkout. Mastercard describes Agent Pay for Machines as infrastructure for agent and machine payments. Neither description means all merchants accept agent checkout. | AP2 | Agent payment workflows that need a common framework | Can accommodate different payment methods and authentication approaches | AP2 is a protocol framework, not a card or wallet. Google also documents an A2A x402 extension for crypto payments. Google’s AP2 announcement; AP2 FAQ. |
| x402 | Paying for an online resource or service | Stablecoins over HTTP | Coinbase describes x402 as an open, web-native protocol that uses the HTTP 402 Payment Required status. It is not a universally accepted retail checkout method. Coinbase’s x402 overview. |
These descriptions establish intended uses, not comparable consumer terms. The available sources do not provide comparable fee schedules or consumer-protection terms, so they do not support ranking these approaches as cheapest, safest, or best overall.
What an individual shopper should check
Before authorizing an agent to spend, inspect the particular service’s controls and terms rather than assuming a protocol provides them. Review:

- Authorization: Does each transaction require your approval, or can the agent complete purchases without a prompt?
- Spending governance: Can you set amount limits, restrict merchants or categories, and pause or revoke permission?
- Credential handling: Where are card or wallet credentials held, and what can the agent access?
- Visibility: Can you see the merchant, amount, and transaction status before and after payment?
- Refunds and disputes: Which provider handles a disputed charge, and how does the merchant process returns?
- Availability: Does the payment provider and merchant support the specific agent flow in your location?
These checks matter because safeguards differ by implementation. For example, AWS says its AgentCore Payments preview includes wallet authentication, execution, governance, and observability; that announcement does not establish that other agent payment systems have the same features. AWS preview announcement.
How mature and widely used are these options?
Announcements, ecosystem participation, demonstrations, and a service preview are not the same as broad availability at checkout. Verify support with the provider and merchant before relying on an agent payment method.

- Google said more than 60 organizations collaborated on AP2 in its 2025 announcement. That is an ecosystem participation figure, not a measure of adoption or transaction volume. Google Cloud.
- Mastercard described more than 30 industry leaders as early supporters or participants of Agent Pay for Machines on June 10, 2026. That does not establish that every listed organization offers generally available consumer checkout. Mastercard.
- A Visa and Artemis report announcement estimated roughly $15.0 million in adjusted x402 volume across 109.6 million transactions since x402 launched in May 2025. This is a report-specific onchain estimate, not a measure of all agent commerce or a forecast. Visa’s report announcement.
For developers and merchants choosing an integration
Treat AP2, x402, network programs, and managed services as distinct integration paths. Match the approach to the payment context, then confirm its current documentation and operational requirements before building around it.
- Confirm launch status and whether the offering is generally available or a preview.
- Check supported payment methods or currencies, jurisdictions, and merchant requirements.
- Determine how authorization, spending limits, credential custody, monitoring, refunds, and disputes work in the specific implementation.
- For merchant shopping, confirm the merchant and its payment provider accept the agent checkout flow; for online services, confirm the endpoint supports the relevant payment protocol.
Visa and Mastercard describe network programs, partners, or demonstrations, while AWS identifies AgentCore Payments as a preview. Those announcements show active development, not universal acceptance. Visa’s transaction announcement; Mastercard’s program announcement; AWS preview announcement.
