28 Years Later: The Bone Temple was not shown to have vanished from every U.S. theater. Its bookings fell sharply after its January 16, 2026 release, and a report described its removal from about 1,500 theaters. The available theater counts show a steep reduction, not an immediate nationwide shutdown.
Which 28 Years Later movie is this?
The film at issue is 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the sequel released in the U.S. in January 2026. It is distinct from 28 Years Later, the 2025 predecessor. Box Office Mojo lists that earlier film’s domestic opening at $30,002,966 and its domestic gross at $70,446,897; those figures do not belong to The Bone Temple. Box Office Mojo’s record for the 2025 film.
Did theaters remove the sequel everywhere?
No available record supports saying it was pulled from every theater. GamesRadar, relaying a report from Collider, described an approximately 1,500-theater reduction over a weekend. The Numbers’ weekly listing likewise shows the film’s booking count declining over several weeks rather than instantly reaching zero. Neither source establishes its current availability at a specific theater.
How did the box office and theater count change?
The Numbers records a wide U.S. release on January 16, 2026, in 3,506 theaters, with an opening weekend of $12,521,327. Its weekly figures show both lower receipts and fewer theaters over the following weeks:

Why do reports give different second-week drops?
The Associated Press reported that the film opened at about $13 million and fell 71% to $3.6 million in its second weekend. The Numbers lists $3,425,078 for the week beginning January 23, down 73% in its weekly table. Those figures cover different reporting periods and use different reported values, so they should be kept attributed to their respective outlets rather than combined as if they were the same measurement. AP also reported an opening in 3,506 theaters and a $63 million production budget. Associated Press weekend box-office report.

What does the reported $63 million budget mean?
The $63 million figure cited by AP is a reported production budget, not a complete break-even threshold. It does not include marketing and promotion in AP’s account, and it should not be compared directly with box-office receipts as though every ticket-dollar went to the studio. The figures establish a production-cost estimate and the film’s reported theatrical results, but do not by themselves determine its total profitability.
What has been said about the film’s performance?
David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, offered this interpretation to Variety: “Critics’ reviews and audience scores are the best of the series. But returning after seven months is too quick, and it’s hurting the numbers.” That is Gross’s explanation of the performance, not a demonstrated cause or a studio statement.
