For India’s GST e-way bills, “renew” means using the portal’s Extend Validity facility. Check the bill’s current record for its displayed deadline, then have the current transporter request an extension if an exceptional delay means the consignment will not arrive in time. The request requires a reason and updated movement details; it does not allow changes to Part A.
How to check an e-way bill
Use the official E-Way Bill System portal. Its FAQ says anyone can check authenticity or correctness using the search option and these four details: EWB number, EWB date, generator ID and document number.
Compare the record’s identity and status with the transport document and consignment. The portal’s API documentation identifies Valid Upto as the validity field returned for a bill, so use the deadline displayed on the relevant current record rather than calculating one from memory. The FAQ’s public-search instructions specifically cover authenticity or correctness; account dashboards for taxpayers and transporters separately show bills associated with their accounts.
Understand the validity deadline
When the validity clock starts
The official FAQ says validity starts with the first Part B transport entry: the first vehicle number for road transport, or the first transport document number for rail, air or ship, whichever occurs first. Later Part B updates do not restart or recalculate the validity period.

Distance allowance
Under the current FAQ, regular transport gets one day for every 200 km or part thereof. For example, the FAQ treats 310 km as two days. This replaced the former 100 km allowance effective 1 January 2021 under Notification No. 94/2020 – Central Tax dated 22 December 2020; older FAQ copies showing 100 km are outdated for this rule.
For over-dimensional cargo (ODC), the current FAQ describes one day for every 20 km or part thereof. Because the allowance differs by category, confirm that the consignment is classified correctly and rely on the bill’s displayed deadline.

How to extend validity before expiry
Use the portal’s Extend Validity facility when an exceptional circumstance means the consignment is not expected to reach its destination before the displayed deadline. The current transporter associated with the bill normally submits the request. The FAQ permits requests before or after expiry; API validation defines the window as eight hours before through eight hours after the existing expiry. An after-expiry option is not an unlimited grace period.
- Check the bill and deadline. Confirm it covers the consignment and note the displayed Valid Upto value.
- Open Extend Validity. The current transporter carrying the consignment should submit the request through the official portal within the applicable window.
- Enter the required information. Prepare the EWB number, a reason with a detailed explanation, the current place and its details, approximate remaining distance to the destination, and updated transport details in Part B. The system calculates the extension based on remaining distance.
- Keep Part A accurate. Part A cannot be changed in an extension request. The FAQ says an incorrect submitted bill cannot be edited; it must be cancelled and generated again, subject to applicable cancellation rules.
- Check the updated record. Note the new displayed validity and make sure the transport details match the conveyance actually carrying the goods.
The API validation allows the generator to update when no transporter is assigned to the bill. Otherwise, the general instruction is for the current transporter to request the extension.

Reasons and special situations
The FAQ identifies exceptional circumstances such as natural calamity, law-and-order issues, transshipment delay and an accident involving the conveyance. The transporter must explain the reason in detail. The official reason list includes Natural Calamity, Law and Order Situation, Transshipment, Accident and Others. An API example pairs a reason code with remarks such as “Flood”; an example is not a guarantee that a particular request will be accepted automatically.
Consignment at a warehouse
For a warehouse situation, the FAQ instructs users to choose Extend Validity, indicate that the consignment is in transit, provide warehouse details such as PIN code and address, and request validity for the remaining distance.

Vehicle breakdown
For a breakdown, the FAQ says to select “In Movement,” enter the replacement vehicle number and breakdown location PIN code, then request an extension for the remaining distance.

The FAQ says goods are not supposed to be moved after e-way bill validity expires. It describes extension in exceptional circumstances, including transshipment, with the reason and Part B transport details updated. Submit within the API’s stated window of eight hours before to eight hours after expiry; do not treat the after-expiry facility as permission for ordinary movement or as an open-ended extension period.
