Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst, check the transaction status in your UPI app and save the transaction ID and debit proof. Tell the merchant the payment is being checked, and contact your UPI app or participating bank to confirm what happened. Do not pay again until the merchant and your bank have clarified whether the first payment succeeded.
Check the transaction status before deciding what to do
Open the UPI app’s transaction history, select the payment, and refresh or check its status. Save the status exactly as shown. “Pending,” “failed,” and “successful” are app status labels; phrases such as “money deducted but not received” do not establish which outcome occurred.
- Pending: Confirmation may be delayed, including at the beneficiary bank. A pending status alone does not prove that the merchant was credited or that the payment has failed. NPCI’s UPI FAQ says pending transactions can be delayed at the beneficiary bank and describes funds arriving after the bank’s daily settlements; it mentions 48 hours in that explanation. This is an explanation of pending status, not a substitute for the RBI reversal deadline for a merchant-payment failure.
- Failed: Check whether the debit is still visible in your bank account. NPCI’s FAQ says that failed-transaction money will be refunded, sometimes later than intended, and advises contacting your bank’s customer support if you have not received it within one hour. That one-hour advice is NPCI FAQ guidance, not the RBI deadline for a merchant payment.
- Successful: Show the merchant the transaction reference and ask them to check their payment records. If they still cannot locate it, report the mismatch to your UPI app or bank rather than assuming the payment can safely be repeated.
Keep the transaction date and time, amount, reference or transaction ID, displayed status, and a screenshot or bank statement showing the debit. If possible, note when the merchant checked and confirmed the payment was not in its records.
Find the reversal deadline for your transaction type
RBI sets different auto-reversal timelines for two distinct UPI failure cases. The deadlines below come from the Reserve Bank of India’s 2019 notification on failed-transaction turnaround time and compensation. It defines the limits in days, not business days. T means the transaction date.
#1 Best Overall
| Failure case | What happened | Auto-reversal deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Funds transfer | Your account was debited, but the beneficiary account was not credited. | If the beneficiary bank cannot credit the account, it must auto-reverse by T+1 day. |
| Payment to a merchant | Your account was debited, but confirmation was not received at the merchant location. | Auto-reversal is due within T+5 days. |
Because your question concerns a merchant, the second row is the relevant category if the failure is that the merchant location did not receive transaction confirmation. Do not apply the funds-transfer T+1 deadline to that merchant-payment case.
Report the payment and keep the complaint reference
- In your UPI app, open the transaction and choose its help, support, or complaint option if available. Labels vary by app.
- Give the support team the transaction ID, date and time, amount, status, debit evidence, and the merchant’s confirmation that the payment is not visible, if you have it.
- Save the complaint number, submission date, and any response. Follow up using that reference if the status does not change or the reversal does not arrive by the applicable deadline.
- If the app route does not resolve the issue, NPCI’s UPI dispute redressal page provides a channel to check transaction status and register a complaint with the member institution. NPCI also says users can raise a grievance or check a UPI transaction’s status through a participating bank’s UPI app.
Know when delayed-reversal compensation may apply
For the two failure categories in its 2019 notification, RBI specifies compensation of ₹100 per day for delay beyond the applicable reversal timeline. That means the relevant deadline is T+1 for a funds transfer where the beneficiary was not credited, or T+5 for a merchant payment where confirmation did not reach the merchant location. This compensation is tied to those specified failure cases; the fact that a merchant cannot immediately find a payment does not by itself establish eligibility. Report the transaction and ask the bank to address both the reversal and any compensation due.

Escalate an unresolved complaint to RBI
If your bank or payment provider does not resolve the complaint, RBI’s complaint information page directs customers to the Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme. Check RBI’s current eligibility conditions, required prior complaint process, and filing instructions before submitting an escalation; the applicable procedure can depend on the case.
