Measure each stage separately
A useful report follows the path from exposure to outcome, while preserving each platform’s own metric and unit.

Measure Google Search exposure and clicks
Use the dedicated Search Console generative AI Search performance view to track exposure from Google Search’s generative AI features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. The report offers page, country, device, and date views. Google announced the Search and Discover reports on June 3, 2026, and says the Search report had rolled out worldwide by August 31, 2026. Use the regular Search Console Performance report alongside it when you need the broader Google Search picture. Google includes AI features in the Web search type, so that aggregate is not a distinct measure of AI-feature exposure. Keep the dedicated generative AI view labeled separately from overall Web performance.

To assess whether exposure sends people to the site, examine Search Console clicks and CTR. These are click-through measures, not counts of visits after arrival.
Track Discover AI visibility separately
If Discover matters to your audience, use its separate Generative AI performance report rather than combining its impressions with Search. Google defines a Discover impression as a link seen in a generative AI feature in Discover with the link scrolled into view. The report includes pages, countries, and dates; dates are in Pacific Time, and Search Labs experiments are excluded. Google’s announcement

Measure citations in Microsoft AI answers
Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report covers publisher citations across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated Bing summaries, and selected partner experiences. Its measures include total citations, average cited pages, sampled grounding queries, page-level citation activity, and trends. Treat these as citation visibility signals—not traffic or ranking measures. Microsoft cautions that citation counts do not show ranking, placement, authority, or a page’s precise role in an individual answer, and grounding queries are sampled. Use Bing Search Performance separately when you want Bing traffic and search performance. Its clicks can come from different Bing surfaces, including Web search, chat responses, news answers, image results, and knowledge panels. Measure visits and outcomes after arrival
Use web analytics to understand sessions, engagement, landing pages, and configured key events or conversions. Google distinguishes the two systems this way: Search Console covers activity “before a person arrived at your website from Google Search,” while Analytics describes visitors’ interactions with the site. Google’s integration documentation
Search Console clicks and Analytics sessions are calculated differently, so they should not be expected to match exactly. Google identifies possible reasons for differences including time zones, canonical URLs, tagging, traffic breakdowns, non-HTML pages, and bot filtering. Compare aligned dates, country, device, and landing page where possible, then use those methodological differences to investigate gaps. Google’s documentation on data differences

Build a reporting workflow
- Choose the surface. Separate Google Search, Google Discover, and Microsoft-supported AI answer citations; each report covers different experiences.
- Record the unit. Label every chart as impressions, citations, clicks, sessions, engagement, or conversions. Do not add unlike units together or relabel impressions and citations as “AI traffic.”
- Align comparisons. Use the same reporting period and, where available, compare matching countries, devices, and landing pages. Account for Discover’s Pacific Time date basis and note query sampling where applicable.
- Follow the path to an outcome. Compare Search Console clicks with Analytics organic sessions and engagement, then review configured key events or conversions. Google’s dashboard guidance recommends looking at clicks and CTR alongside organic sessions and engagement, and investigating query and page changes when trends shift. Google’s dashboard guidance
- Investigate changes before drawing conclusions. Check affected pages and queries, Analytics source/medium and landing-page setup, date and timezone alignment, and any changes to tracking or canonicalization.
- Put limitations beside the chart. State the platform, surface, metric unit, date basis, dimensions, and any sampling or coverage limits so readers can interpret the trend correctly.
What these reports can—and cannot—tell you
Use the reports to answer distinct questions: Did content appear in a measured Google AI Search or Discover feature? Was it cited in a supported Microsoft AI experience? Did users click through, and what did they do on the site? The platforms do not provide one unified measure that attributes every visit or conversion to a particular AI answer exposure.
