1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA traffic drop that lines up with a Google Search update is a reason to investigate, not proof that the update caused it. To fix declining organic traffic, first confirm the dates, then use Google Search Console to find which pages, queries, and search types lost visibility. Check seasonality and technical problems before making changes. If a large, sustained decline remains, focus on substantial improvements that help readers—not quick SEO fixes. Google does not guarantee a recovery or a set timetable.
Did the search update cause the traffic decline?
Start by checking Google’s Search Status Dashboard for ranking updates and Search incidents. Record when a relevant update began and finished, then compare those dates with the traffic drop. Timing is a clue, not a diagnosis: demand changes, indexing problems, outages, site moves, security issues, and other causes can also reduce search traffic.
For a core update, Google recommends waiting at least one full week after rollout completion before analyzing its effects. Compare the period after that wait with a comparable period before rollout began; avoid judging the result from a few days of volatile data. Google’s guidance is at Google Search’s core updates and your website.
How to find what lost traffic in Search Console
In Google Search Console, open Performance and review clicks, impressions, and average position. Use the longest useful history—Google recommends a 16-month view to help identify recurring seasonal patterns—and compare the same number of days, ideally matching weekdays. Look at clicks and impressions alongside position; an absolute average-position figure alone can be misleading.

Break the report down by query, page, country, device, search appearance, and search type. Review Web, Images, Video, and News separately when they matter to your site. This helps distinguish a broad site decline from losses concentrated in one section, audience, or kind of search.
- Clicks fall while impressions stay similar: investigate whether titles or snippets are less compelling, or whether competing results have become more attractive.
- Both clicks and impressions fall: investigate visibility, indexing, demand, and the affected queries and pages rather than assuming the same explanation.
- Losses are site-wide or affect a large page group: inspect Search Console’s Page indexing and Crawl stats reports for patterns.
- Only a few URLs are affected: inspect representative pages with URL Inspection and compare their status and search performance with unaffected pages.

Rule out other explanations before editing pages
Check whether search interest changed independently of your site. Use Google Trends to examine important queries for a seasonal pattern or a broader decline in demand. A traffic decline that affects a topic across the web may call for a different response than a visibility loss limited to your pages.
Also check for search-system data anomalies, server availability, accidental robots.txt blocks or noindex directives, crawling and indexing problems, and site moves. Review Search Console for security issues and manual actions, and consider whether spam-policy problems could apply. These checks matter because changing good content will not repair a server outage or an indexing block.

Choose a response that matches the evidence
If the change is small
A modest movement in average position, especially among already prominent results, is not by itself a reason for a drastic rewrite or site-wide overhaul. Monitor the affected queries and pages, and look for a sustained pattern before intervening.
If the decline is large and sustained
Review the pages with the greatest losses and assess the site as a whole. Ask whether the material offers clear, reliable value for people, whether it answers the query well, and whether readers can find and use it easily. Compare your pages honestly with the results now satisfying searchers better. Make meaningful improvements to usefulness, accuracy, presentation, or navigation where the evidence points to a real weakness.

Google cautions: “Avoid doing ‘quick fix’ changes (like removing some page element because you heard it was bad for SEO). Instead, focus on making changes that make sense for your users and are sustainable in the long term.” Its traffic-drop guidance also notes: “Keep in mind that there might not be anything fundamentally wrong with your content.” These are reasons to diagnose carefully, not assume every decline requires a content rewrite.
When content cannot be salvaged
Deleting content should be a last resort, reserved for material that cannot be made useful or appropriate. Do not remove pages merely because a particular SEO tactic is rumored to be harmful; make changes based on the actual page, audience, and evidence.

How long can recovery take?
Google says some changes may be reflected in days, but its systems can take several months to assess sustained site-wide improvements. Review performance again after a few weeks, using the same segments and comparison periods so you can tell whether the pattern has changed. If a decline continues for several months, a later update may be needed for reassessment; smaller ongoing ranking changes can also affect performance. None of these timeframes predicts a particular site’s outcome, and no change guarantees higher rankings or traffic.
