That was a dated maximum, not a confirmed rate for every provider named in the roundup or a rate that should be assumed available now. The FDIC’s national savings rate was 0.46% as of August 19, 2024—a separate benchmark calculated across the market.
What were savings account rates on September 5, 2024?
A roundup published for September 5, 2024 reported high-yield savings offers of up to 5.50% APY, with Poppy Bank, Western Alliance Bank, and Jenius Bank among the providers associated with the top rates. Its available text does not show a complete provider-by-provider rate table, so it does not establish that each named provider paid exactly 5.50%. The listed rates were reported as current at 8 a.m. ET that day and could vary by region or change. The September 5 rate roundup.
The FDIC’s national savings deposit rate was 0.46% as of August 19, 2024. It is a nationwide benchmark, not the highest advertised rate available from a particular account. The FDIC calculates savings and interest-checking rates using the $2,500 product tier; for its post-March 2021 method, institution rates are weighted by each institution’s share of domestic deposits. | Measure | Rate | Date and meaning |

| Highest advertised high-yield savings rate reported | Up to 5.50% APY | Reported at 8 a.m. ET on September 5, 2024; provider-specific terms are not established by the available roundup text. |
| FDIC national savings deposit rate | 0.46% | As of August 19, 2024; a weighted national benchmark, not a top offer. |
Why the headline rate is only one part of the comparison
A high APY does not by itself show what an account would earn for a particular saver. Before choosing an account, check the institution’s terms and disclosures for the points that determine eligibility, access and safety:
#1 Best Overall
- APY and rate type: Confirm the current APY, whether it is promotional or variable, and whether conditions apply.
- Balance requirements and fees: Check the opening deposit, any minimum balance needed to earn the stated APY, and fees that could offset interest.
- Access: Consider available app, ATM, branch and linked-transfer options in light of how quickly you may need the money.
- Deposit insurance: Verify FDIC or NCUA coverage for the institution and account structure, including applicable ownership and category limits. Do not infer coverage arrangements from a brand name alone.
- Availability: Confirm that the account and advertised rate are offered in your location. Rates and promotions can vary by region.
The September 5 roundup flags variability, regional differences and the importance of comparing account terms, but the available information does not establish detailed minimums, fees, access methods or insurance arrangements for each named provider. Those details must be checked in the relevant institution’s disclosures rather than assumed from the headline rate. September 5, 2024 rate roundup.

On August 23, 2024, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome H. Powell said, “The time has come for policy to adjust.” He immediately added: “The direction of travel is clear, and the timing and pace of rate cuts will depend on incoming data, the evolving outlook, and the balance of risks.” Powell’s August 23, 2024 Jackson Hole speech.

The September 5 roundup anticipated a rate cut at the Federal Reserve’s September 17–18 meeting; that was an expectation expressed at the time, not an outcome known on September 5. Savings account APYs are variable and may respond to market conditions and future Fed decisions, but a policy move does not automatically or immediately change every account’s rate.
