Thomas Woldbye: Who Is Heathrow Airport’s CEO?

Thomas Woldbye is the Chief Executive Officer of Heathrow Airport. He officially took up the role on 18 October 2023, succeeding John Holland-Kaye. Before Heathrow, he led Copenhagen Airport for 11 years and spent much of his earlier career in global shipping and logistics.

Who is Thomas Woldbye?

Woldbye is the executive responsible for leading Heathrow Airport. Heathrow announced his appointment as its next CEO on 30 June 2023; the airport’s 2023 annual report records 18 October 2023 as his formal appointment date.

His move followed his departure from Copenhagen Airport, where he had been CEO since 2011. Copenhagen Airports announced in June 2023 that he would leave the role on 30 September; Heathrow later said his Copenhagen tenure ran from May 2011 to September 2023.

Woldbye led Copenhagen Airport for 11 years. Heathrow credits his leadership there with advancing passenger service, sustainability and growth, and says the airport was recognized for customer and retail experience, efficiency and profitability. A.P. Møller-Maersk and Norfolkline

Before Copenhagen Airport, Woldbye spent 27 years at A.P. Møller-Maersk. He joined as a management trainee in 1983, held posts in several countries and worked primarily in Maersk Line’s worldwide container business. In 2004, he became Group CEO of Norfolkline, which was headquartered in The Hague.

What is his education?

Heathrow’s biography says Woldbye holds an HD in Financing from Copenhagen Business School, as well as professional qualifications from London Business School and IMD in Switzerland. It does not name the latter qualifications.

What are his responsibilities at Heathrow?

Heathrow describes Woldbye’s remit as including innovation, better customer service, sustainability and growth. The airport says he oversees investment plans intended to upgrade facilities, expand capacity and improve passenger service. These are the stated priorities of his role, not a report of independently measured results.
