Sharon Chuter, the founder of Uoma Beauty and the #PullUpOrShutUp initiative, died on August 14, 2025, at age 38, according to contemporaneous reports citing the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. Initial coverage said the cause had not yet been determined. In October, later reporting attributed her death to blunt traumatic injuries and said the manner was accidental, while noting the case remained open.

What was reported about Chuter’s death

Allure and Beauty Independent reported Chuter’s death on August 24–25, 2025, citing the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner for the date and age. Those initial reports said the cause was undetermined or pending investigation. Allure’s obituary and Beauty Independent’s obituary covered her death and career.

In October 2025, USA TODAY reporting syndicated by Yahoo and TheGrio said the medical examiner attributed the cause to blunt traumatic injuries and the manner to accident. Those outlets also reported that the case remained open. The underlying medical examiner record was not independently available for confirmation here, so these later details should be understood as reported findings, not as an independently reviewed case file. Yahoo’s USA TODAY-syndicated report and TheGrio’s report provide that later account.

What Chuter built in beauty

Uoma Beauty

Chuter founded Uoma Beauty, a prestige cosmetics brand launched in 2019 with an emphasis on inclusivity. A prominent example was its Say What!? Foundation, reported by Allure and Beauty Independent as launching in 51 shades. Beauty Independent reported that Chuter said Uoma raised $3.5 million in funding to prepare for its launch; that figure is attributed to the publication’s account of a 2023 interview, rather than an independently reviewed funding record. Beauty Independent’s career coverage traces the company’s early history.

Pull Up For Change

In June 2020, Chuter launched Pull Up For Change and its #PullUpOrShutUp initiative, pressing companies—especially beauty businesses—to disclose the racial makeup of their workforces and leadership. Uoma’s About page dates the initiative to June 2020; Allure described its aim as increasing corporate transparency about Black representation.

Speaking to Allure in 2020, Chuter said, “I’m here to start a movement [and] to encourage people and make them know that they have a voice.” Her work joined brand-building with a public demand that companies show who was represented in their organizations.

Uoma’s ownership changed before her death

Uoma by Sharon C launched as a sister brand in 2021, according to Allure. In May 2023, Chuter announced that she had stepped down as Uoma CEO and resigned from its board. Beauty Independent reported that MacArthur Beauty acquired Uoma’s intellectual property in December 2023; the brand announced a relaunch under new ownership in December 2024. These events mark a change from the original founder-led period, and the current brand should not be described as controlled by Chuter.

The unresolved dispute over Uoma’s assets

In February 2025, Chuter sued MacArthur Beauty and other parties over the transfer of Uoma’s assets. As described by Beauty Independent, her complaint alleged that the assets had been transferred without her authorization and that she had been improperly sidelined after taking medical leave. Those are allegations, not findings established by a court. Beauty Independent reported that the case remained unresolved when Chuter died. Nothing in the reported dispute establishes a connection between it and her death.

In a February 2023 interview quoted in Beauty Independent’s obituary, Chuter reflected on the pressures facing beauty brands: “We will get a chance now to reinvent ourselves. The consumer is now challenging us, saying, ‘Tell me why I should be here,’ and the people who can give the right answers will survive. The people who can’t, unfortunately, will go.”
