Before you click a crypto promotion link or connect a wallet, verify the offer through the issuer’s independently located official website or support channel. Confirm the exact code, destination domain, eligibility rules, deadlines and required actions. A wallet connection is not the same as signing a transaction or token approval, but it does not prove the site is trustworthy. Never disclose your Secret Recovery Phrase.
Verify the offer independently before using its link
A promo code is not proof that an offer is genuine. A message, social post, email, search result or unsolicited airdrop can direct you to an imitation site. Instead of following the supplied link, find the project or service through a domain or app you already know, then check its official announcements and support channels. MetaMask advises comparing suspicious sites with its official website and support center; the CFTC likewise recommends investigating the people and firms behind an offer and verifying its claims (CFTC customer advisory).
Look for confirmation of the exact promotion, code, destination domain, dates and terms. A familiar logo or social-media verification badge is not enough: the reviewed guidance does not establish a universal way to prove that a social account is authentic. If the official channel does not confirm the same offer and destination, do not connect a wallet or enter payment details.
Read the terms and identify what the offer asks you to do
Before considering a claim, work out what you must provide or risk. Check who qualifies, what the reward actually is, whether a deposit or transaction is required, what fees apply, when the promotion expires and whether the issuer can change its terms. Treat “free” rewards carefully if claiming them requires a deposit, a purchase or a wallet permission.

If the promotion involves buying a token, depositing funds or using a trading or advisory service, investigate the seller and the claims separately from the code. The CFTC recommends checking relevant registration and disciplinary history. Its token advisory also suggests understanding the rights attached to the token, how funds will be used, whether you can recover your money and what could affect the token’s value (CFTC customer advisory; CFTC token advisory). Which checks apply depends on the jurisdiction, entity and offering structure; a registry lookup by itself does not settle a token’s legal status.
Understand what your wallet is asking you to do
Wallet prompts are not interchangeable. A dapp connection lets a site interact with a wallet; a token approval is a separate signed permission that can let a contract move a token within the allowance granted. MetaMask explains that connecting to a dapp differs from signing a token approval (MetaMask: What is a token approval?).

Some fake voucher or mining offers present an approval as though it were a routine purchase or claim. An unlimited token approval can authorize access far beyond the amount needed for a legitimate action. Check the token and allowance shown in the wallet, and refuse a request that does not match what you intended to do. If the wallet displays an unfamiliar transaction, network change, permission or signature request with little context, stop rather than treating it as the next step in claiming a reward. MetaMask warns that a request with little context may be fraudulent (MetaMask: How to identify and report scams).
Do not take a connection prompt as proof that a site is safe. The risk depends on the site, wallet, chain, permissions and what you authorize or sign.

Never enter your recovery phrase to claim a reward
Do not enter a Secret Recovery Phrase or private key into a website, form, popup, support chat or promotion flow. MetaMask says its recovery phrase should only be entered for initial setup confirmation or to restore or reset the wallet through the wallet’s own process—not to claim assets. It also identifies requests to verify or upgrade a MetaMask wallet through a person or platform as scams (MetaMask: Secret Recovery Phrase and private keys; MetaMask: How to identify and report scams). This warning is about requests for wallet credentials; it does not mean every crypto service has no legitimate identity checks.
If you may have exposed the phrase, treat the wallet as compromised. MetaMask’s guidance is to migrate to a new Secret Recovery Phrase. Do not follow migration instructions from the promoter or a message claiming to offer support; use the wallet provider’s independently located official guidance.

Recognize red flags without treating them as proof about a specific offer
- Guaranteed returns or extraordinary yields: MetaMask describes “free money,” guaranteed returns and extreme APY as lures in fake mining or voucher scams. The CFTC also flags guaranteed high returns. Its advisory gives “20-50%” as an example of what fraudsters may promise—not as a measured return or scam-prevalence statistic (MetaMask: How to identify and report scams; CFTC customer advisory).
- Pressure to act immediately: A countdown, threat or insistence that you buy now is a reason to pause. CFTC guidance lists pressure to buy immediately as a fraud red flag (CFTC customer advisory).
- Unexpected airdrops, NFTs or vouchers with unfamiliar links: Do not follow embedded claim instructions just because an asset appears in your wallet; MetaMask warns that such lures may lead to phrase phishing or malicious signatures (MetaMask: Identify and report scams).
- A polished site or familiar logo: Scam sites can imitate legitimate services. Check the actual domain independently and inspect the wallet request, rather than relying on appearance (MetaMask: How to identify and report scams).
These warning signs justify stopping and checking; they do not by themselves determine whether a particular named promotion is fraudulent. The CFTC puts the broader investment warning plainly: “There is no such thing as a guaranteed investment or trading strategy” (CFTC token advisory).

A connection and a token approval are different actions. If you signed an approval you do not trust, check the approval and revoke it using a trusted tool appropriate to the chain, reached independently. Confirm that you are on the correct chain and interacting with the correct contract; do not use a revoke link supplied by the promoter. Approval permissions are chain- and wallet-dependent, so there is no single revocation interface established for every situation (MetaMask: What is a token approval?).

If you signed an unfamiliar transaction or disclosed your recovery phrase, stop interacting with the promotion and use the wallet provider’s official support guidance. A hardware wallet may be considered for storing the bulk of your holdings, with smaller sums kept in an internet-connected software wallet, but it is custody equipment—not a way to verify a promotion or make a malicious signature safe (MetaMask: How to keep your crypto safe).
