How to Evaluate a Crypto Payment App Before Sending Money

Before using a crypto payment app, check the total cost, who controls the assets, whether the network and address match, and whether the app and request are legitimate.

Before sending money through a crypto payment app, check the full cost, who controls the crypto and how you can regain access, whether the asset and network match the recipient, and whether the app and payment request are genuine. Confirm the provider is allowed to offer the relevant service where you live. Treat a transfer as potentially irreversible: pause if anyone creates urgency, demands secrecy, or directs you to an unfamiliar app or address.

Compare the total cost, not just the displayed fee

Work out how much money or crypto leaves your account and how much the recipient will actually receive. A transfer advertised as free can still cost you through an exchange-rate spread, conversion, network charge, or withdrawal fee.

  • Check the app’s stated transfer fee.
  • Compare the quoted exchange rate with the rate used to calculate the transfer; the difference may be a spread.
  • Include any cost to convert between currencies or crypto assets, plus network and withdrawal charges.
  • Check whether a promotional price or fee waiver expires and what the standard charges will be afterward.

The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says promotional price limits should be clear and prominent. Ask for the final amount the recipient will receive before confirming, not merely the app’s headline fee. CFPB guidance on promotional pricing.

Find out who holds the crypto and what recovery means

Ask whether the provider controls the private keys or whether you do. If the app holds the assets, understand how and when you can withdraw them, what happens if your account is restricted or the service is unavailable, and how you can seek help. If you control the wallet, find out what recovery options exist if you lose the credentials needed to access it.

These are different custody arrangements, with different access and recovery trade-offs. The CFPB describes payment apps that may hold received funds in a platform or associated stored-value account until the user asks to move them out. Do not assume that a balance shown in a crypto app has the protections of a bank deposit. Read the provider’s terms and the CFPB’s report on funds stored through payment apps. For additional consumer guidance, see the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs’ cryptocurrency scam guidance.

Match the asset, network, address, and recipient

Before authorizing a transfer, check four details: the crypto asset, the blockchain network, the destination address, and the recipient. A recipient may provide an address for a particular asset and network; do not assume that an address or network selected in the app is compatible. If an address is new or unfamiliar, verify it through a separate, trusted channel rather than relying on the message that supplied it.

Crypto transfers generally cannot be reversed. A mistaken or fraudulent destination can therefore mean a permanent loss. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) warns consumers about the risk of sending crypto to scammers. See its consumer advisory on unusual money-transfer instructions.

Verify the app and the payment request independently

Do not treat a link, phone number, or app recommended by an unexpected caller or message as proof that the request is genuine. Find the organization’s official site independently, use the official app store listing, and contact the organization using details from its own site. If someone says to move money to protect an account, stop and contact the real organization through a verified channel.

Urgency, demands for secrecy, pressure to stay on a call, unfamiliar software, and requests for remote access are serious warning signs. The CFTC states: “No government agency, legitimate financial institution, or reputable company will instruct you to move money using crypto ATMs, gift cards, or couriers.” Its advisory is titled Pause Before You Pay: Unusual Money Transfer Instructions May Signal Fraud. The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs puts the transfer risk plainly: “It’s like sending someone cash and payments typically are not reversible.” Read its Cryptocurrency Scams guidance.

Check whether the provider can serve you where you live

Identify the legal entity providing the service and check the rules for your country and the specific activity you plan to use. A company’s label or a registration for one activity does not necessarily establish that it has permission to offer every crypto service in every market.

  • United Kingdom: The Financial Conduct Authority says whether an activity requires permission depends on the activity and the facts. Check its PERG 18 guidance.
  • European Union: The European Commission describes requirements under MiCA for covered crypto-asset service providers, including wallets and trading venues. See its MiCA overview.

These sources explain frameworks; they do not establish an individual app’s current status in every country. If you live elsewhere, check your own regulator’s current information and the provider’s stated geographic restrictions.

Use this checklist before you confirm

  1. Calculate the full cost: Include the app fee, exchange-rate spread, conversion, network and withdrawal charges, and the end date of any promotion. Confirm the expected amount the recipient gets.
  2. Understand custody and access: Find out who controls the keys, how withdrawals work, and what recovery or account-restriction process applies.
  3. Verify transfer compatibility: Match the asset and network, check the destination address, and confirm the recipient independently if the details are unfamiliar.
  4. Verify the app and request: Use an independently found official site or app-store listing, and contact the organization through a verified channel.
  5. Check local eligibility: Confirm the relevant provider entity and service are available and permitted where you live.
  6. Pause at pressure: Do not proceed if someone insists on urgency, secrecy, remote access, or moving crypto to “protect” funds.

If you have already sent money

If you suspect fraud, report it promptly to the relevant platform and local authorities. In the United States, the CFTC identifies CFTC.gov/complaint and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) as reporting routes. Preserve the transaction details and communications to help with your report. Do not pay someone who claims they can recover the crypto in exchange for an upfront fee.

Why a careful check matters

Crypto-related fraud can involve substantial losses, although broad statistics do not predict the risk of any particular app or payment. The CFTC reported that the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center recorded more than $388 million in crypto ATM losses in 2025, 58% above the prior year; the CFTC cautions that underreporting may mean actual losses are higher. Those figures concern crypto ATM scams, not all crypto app payments. In a separate measure, the UK FCA’s 2025 wave 6 survey found that 87% of surveyed crypto users who said they had personally suffered crypto crime, a scam, or fraud said they lost money. The FCA describes this as a relatively small victim group; the 2025 victim base shown was 90. That finding is not a rate for all crypto users or all app payments.
