Temu’s takeover was complete only in the sense that it had become a major force in public awareness and a serious competitor in online marketplaces—not that it had overtaken Amazon or taken control of ecommerce. The headline comes from a December 26, 2024, WIRED year-in-review analysis, and its evidence measures visibility and reach, not market dominance.
What “takeover” means in the headline
WIRED published “Temu’s Takeover Is Now Complete” on December 26, 2024. The article’s subheading said Temu had proved “it’s here to stay.” In context, “takeover” describes Temu’s fast rise in public awareness, app visibility, international reach and influence on rival marketplaces. It is a cultural and competitive claim, not a finding that Temu captured ecommerce as a whole. WIRED’s article does not establish that Temu surpassed Amazon in sales or market share.
What the popularity figures do—and don’t—show
The figures reported by WIRED help explain why Temu attracted attention, but they track different things and should not be treated as evidence of sales leadership.
| Measure | What was reported | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone app downloads | Apple identified Temu as the most downloaded iPhone app in the United States for 2024, as reported by WIRED. | App downloads do not measure retail revenue, repeat customers or market share. |
| Website traffic | Similarweb data cited by WIRED put Temu at nearly 700 million website visits per month worldwide in 2024. | Visits are not unique buyers, orders or sales. |
| Country availability | WIRED reported that Temu’s site showed availability in 86 countries in December 2024. | Availability does not mean equal sales or a leading position in every country. |
| Projected sales | WIRED reported an AB Bernstein and Tech Buzz China projection of more than $50 billion in Temu sales for 2024. | This was an analyst forecast, not audited actual sales or a measure of ecommerce market share. |
Those indicators support a conclusion that Temu became hard to ignore. They cannot be combined into proof that it overtook another retailer: app rankings, web visits, geographic availability and projected sales are not comparable measures of market share.

How Temu’s marketplace model has been changing
PDD Holdings says Temu launched in September 2022 and connects third-party merchants with buyers through its app and website. PDD describes a broad merchandise selection and a network of logistics vendors and fulfillment partners; its platforms primarily serve merchants in China. The company’s account appears in its 2025 Form 20-F.
WIRED’s 2024 account described an early emphasis on direct shipping from China and a subsequent move toward locally held inventory and warehouses. It cited The Information for a report that nearly half of US sales involved items from local warehouses at that time. That is a time-bound, secondhand figure—not a current audited breakdown of Temu’s fulfillment mix. The filing confirms logistics and fulfillment partnerships but does not verify that percentage.

For shoppers, this shift matters because a listing’s shipping route and delivery estimate can differ from another listing’s. It does not by itself establish that all Temu orders are fast, or that local fulfillment has replaced direct shipping.
Temu’s finances are not the same as PDD’s finances
PDD Holdings reported 2025 revenue of RMB431,845.7 million (US$61,753.1 million), up 9.7% from 2024, and 16.8 million active merchants, compared with 15.8 million in 2024. These are company-wide figures across PDD’s platforms and services, not Temu-only results. The filing does not provide a Temu-only revenue figure in the cited passages, so PDD’s total revenue cannot validate the forecast of more than $50 billion in Temu sales.

Can Temu compete with Amazon and Walmart?
It can compete for shoppers and marketplace influence, but the evidence behind the 2024 headline does not determine a universal winner or show that Temu leads those rivals in total retail sales. A useful comparison depends on the actual item, seller, location and delivery option.
- Price: WIRED described Temu’s shift from very low prices toward an “affordable” positioning and noted that some prices were no longer much lower than competitors’. Compare the same specifications and account for shipping and taxes at the time you shop.
- Delivery: Check the estimate and fulfillment details on the specific listing. Direct-from-China shipping and stock in a local warehouse are different routes, and delivery depends on the item and destination.
- Quality and seller transparency: WIRED raised perceived quality and reliability as competitive questions; it did not provide controlled product testing or a comparative ratings dataset. Those concerns should not be mistaken for measured proof that one marketplace is better across the board.
- Reach: The 86-country availability figure reported in December 2024 describes where the site showed availability, not customer numbers or market leadership in those places.
Why the regulatory picture matters
Temu’s growth is not the only part of its current story. PDD’s 2025 Form 20-F says the European Commission preliminarily found in July 2025 that Temu breached its Digital Services Act duty to assess risks of illegal products appearing on its marketplace. The filing describes an ongoing process. On this evidence, it should not be presented as a final decision or as proof that a fine was imposed.

What the headline gets right—and what it doesn’t
The headline captures a real shift: by the end of 2024, Temu had substantial visibility, international reach and enough competitive influence to be part of the wider marketplace conversation. The evidence does not show a completed takeover of ecommerce, a Temu victory over Amazon or Walmart in total sales, or a verified Temu-only sales result for 2025. “Here to stay” is a defensible reading of the story; “dominates online retail” is not.
